Flight or Fright
Flight or Fright | Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Ray Bradbury, Joe Hill, Stephen King, Michael Lewis, Roald Dahl, Richard Matheson, Dan Simmons, Tom Bissell, Cody Goodfellow, Ambrose Bierce, Bev Vincent, E.C. Tubb, John Varley, David J. Schow, Peter Treemayne, James L. Dickey
Fasten your seatbelts for an anthology of turbulent tales curated by Stephen King and Bev Vincent. This exciting new collection, perfect for airport or aeroplane reading, includes an original introduction and story notes for each story by Stephen King, and brand new stories from Stephen King and Joe Hill. Stephen King hates to fly. Now he and co-editor Bev Vincent would like to share this fear of flying with you. Welcome to Flight or Fright, an anthology about all the things that can go horribly wrong when you're suspended six miles in the air, hurtling through space at more than 500 mph and sealed up in a metal tube (like - gulp! - a coffin) with hundreds of strangers. All the ways your trip into the friendly skies can turn into a nightmare, including some we'll bet you've never thought of before... but now you will the next time you walk down the jetway and place your fate in the hands of a total stranger. Featuring brand new stories by Joe Hill and Stephen King, as well as fourteen classic tales and one poem from the likes of Richard Matheson, Ray Bradbury, Roald Dahl, Dan Simmons, and many others, Flight or Fright is, as King says, "ideal airplane reading, especially on stormy descents... Even if you are safe on the ground, you might want to buckle up nice and tight." Book a flight for this terrifying new anthology that will have you thinking twice about how you want to reach your final destination. Table of Contents: Introduction by Stephen King Cargo by E. Michael Lewis The Horror of the Heights by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Nightmare at 20,000 Feet by Richard Matheson The Flying Machine by Ambrose Bierce Lucifer! by E.C. Bailedbailed

This is the first book I bailed on in a long time. I was about a third of the way through and the stories just didn‘t grab me. I‘m a huge Stephen King fan but these stories just didn‘t do it for me.

This short story collection felt pretty uneven to me - some really great stories, but most of them were just okay. I'm not afraid of flying, airplanes, or enclosed spaces, so maybe that's why I didn't find them frightening? 2.5⭐

rabbitprincess Yeah, I am not afraid of flying either. The scariest story for me was Joe Hill‘s, because I had never thought about the scenario he puts forward, and the juxtaposition of mundane and horrible situations really got me. 4y
candority @rabbitprincess Yes! That was one of my favourites in the collection! 4y

A book of stories all related to air flight-horror, futuristic, wartime and more. You‘ll think twice before you step into an airplane again

A collection of 17 short stories all relating to airplanes. Some are a little more horror then thriller, but they were all thrilling for me since turbulence seriously freaks me out! 17x15=255+1participation.

256 points for #TeamSlaughter

With 17 tales in this one there were a couple duds for me, but overall it's a strong collection of creepy tales that take place in the sky. My favorite was Nightmare at 20,000 feet. I remember watching the episode of The Twilight Zone that was based on it.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 4y
Reggie Have you seen the movie version of that story with John Lithgow? That creeped me out as a kid. 4y
Addison_Reads @Reggie I haven't. I didn't know about it, but now I must find it. 4y

I‘m still spending a lot of time in bed since my recovery from my knee replacement surgery is much slower than anticipated. I‘ve been reading mostly lighter fare. This is a collection of (scary) short stories related to flying. I don‘t care for horror or the supernatural, wh was the focus of many of these. There were a few that I enjoyed though, including one about what might happen if torture advocate John Yoo got a taste of his own medicine

Lynnsoprano I‘ve had a couple of friends who have undergone knee replacement in the past few months, and I know it takes time. Hang in there! Sending lots of positive thoughts your way ❤️ 5y
arubabookwoman @Lynnsoprano Thank you so much for the encouragement. Until this surgery, I never thought of myself as a pain wimp, so the length of time for recovery has caught me by surprise. We‘re moving to Florida in April, so I need to get going on some packing! 5y
Lynnsoprano @arubabookwoman If I may ask, where in Florida? That‘s where I live 😄 5y
arubabookwoman @Lynnsoprano We are not exactly sure yet. Our oldest son lives near Tampa, so we hope to settle somewhere between Tampa and Sarasota. Our plan is to spend a few months in vacation rentals trying out and getting a feel for a few different towns before we focus on a specific place to settle. I would like to be near a beach, but I don‘t want to live in an area that is 100% tourists or snowbirds. Where in Fla are you? 5y
Lynnsoprano @arubabookwoman We‘re across the state in Wellington, which is west of West Palm Beach. We visit Sanibel Island when we want to go to the beach. Totally understand your preferences. We moved here 22 years ago when hubby took a job in the area. Living in Florida is interesting 😄 I hope we can connect sometime! 5y

I liked this! Some stories were a miss for me, but the bulk of them were delightfully spine-chilling and creepy. This was all the more scary for me since I work for an airline! My job is literally to make sure that everyone has the info they need when horrible things happen. My #freezerbook for #bbrc and a horror book by an indie press for #readharder2020.

rabbitprincess I thought Joe Hill's story the scariest in the collection because it seemed so plausible! 5y

#BookHaul from two library book sales. I‘m particularly excited about Flight or Fright, The Water Cure, Lily and the Octopus, and Hag-Seed!

I‘m officially on a book buying ban for the rest of the year (and probably for the first few months of 2020) 😭

As an aviation enthusiast, I HAD to pick up this collection. I'd consider these stories more thrillers than actual horror, although some were pretty creepy. The scariest one was Joe Hill's story, because it felt all too plausible. Great notes on the stories and an interesting afterword, too.

I have been on the waiting list for this one for a loooong time! I‘m so excited, and thinking of one of John Lithgow‘s finest roles (in my opinion) in the adaptation of Nightmare at 20,000 feet in Twilight Zone. New bus read and a very happy Friday!

I don‘t typically read a lot of short story collections but when I saw there would be a Joe Hill story included I just had to! I really enjoyed his story and a few of the others, but did find myself skipping over a number of them as well. This would be a so-so pick if I didn‘t LOVE the ones I enjoyed (if that makes sense). I also really liked that each story had a different narrator. All in all an entertaining listen! 🌟🌟🌟

Schlinkles When Joe Hill spoke at the Savannah Book Festival last year, this was the story he read before it was published. It‘s so good. 6y

Pretty good collection of horror stories about flying, with a nice mix of older and newer stories. For me the pleasantest surprise was Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Horror of the Heights", which is the opposite of new but nevertheless new to me and deliciously effective.

1. My grandson Caleb, age 15, played in the Homecoming Game at Detroit Country Day School, then attended the Homecoming Dance with a girl who used to cheer when he was on a youth league. Yes, he is tall, he is 6‘9”.
2. Just went to lunch with friends, then we played a game of cards.
3. These short stories feed into my intense fear of flying!
4. I did a grocery pick up at Kroger. Best thing ever invented.

Great Stephen King collection (not all by him, just the one, and one from Joe Hill too). A few of these stories will stay with me for a while. So glad I don‘t have to fly as a routine part of my job now, otherwise this book would have freaked me out even more!

Suzze I‘ve been wanting to read this. I‘m terrified of flying, so this sounds super scary! 6y
wtimblin @Suzze I am not keen on flying anymore, but def not wanting to get on a plane now for a while! 6y

A decent collection of short stories centered around flying, Flight or Fright has a couple of great stories, a few very good ones, and only three I would consider filler. I won‘t clarify which stories fall into those categories in my opinion. Read them for yourself. It‘s a good set of stories.
