The Orenda
The Orenda: A novel | Joseph Boyden
In this hugely acclaimed authors new novel, history comes alive before us when, in the seventeenth century, a Jesuit missionary ventures into the wilderness in search of convertsthe defining moment of first contact between radically different worlds, each at once old and new in its own ways. What unfolds over the next few years is truly epic, constantly illuminating and surprising, sometimes comic, always entrancing, and ultimately all-too-human in its tragic grandeur. Christophe, as educated as any Frenchman could be about the sauvages of the New World whose souls he has sworn to save, begins his true enlightenment shortly after he sets out when his native guidesterrified by even a scent of the Iroquoisabandon him to save themselves. But a Huron warrior and elder named Bird soon takes him prisoner, along with a young Iroquois girl, Snow Falls, whose family he has just killed. The Huron-Iroquois rivalry, now growing vicious, courses through this novel, and these three are its principal characters. Christophe and Snow Falls are held captive in Birds massive village. Champlains Iron People have only lately begun trading with the Huron, who mistrust them as well as this Jesuit Crow who has now trespassed onto their land; and Snow Fallss people, of course, have become the Hurons greatest enemy. Bird knows that to get rid of them both would resolve the issue, but he sees Christophe, however puzzling, as a potential envoy to those in New France, and Snow Falls as a replacement for the two daughters hed lost to the Iroquois. These relationships wax and wane as life comes at them relentlessly: a lacrosse match with an allied tribe, a dangerous mission to trade furs with the French for the deadly shining wood that could save the Huron nation, shocking victories in combat and devastating defeats, then a sickness the likes of which none of them has ever seen. The world of The Orenda blossoms to include such unforgettable characters as Birds oldest friend, Fox; his lover, Gosling, who some believe possesses magical powers; two more Jesuit Crows who arrive to help form a mission; and boys from both tribes whose hearts veer wildly from one side to the other, for one reason or another. Watching over all of them are the spirits that guide their every move. The Orenda traces a story of blood and hope, suspicion and trust, hatred and love, that comes to a head when Jesuit and Huron join together against the stupendous wrath of the Iroquois, when everything that any of them has ever known or believed in faces nothing less than annihilation. A saga nearly four hundred years old, it is also timeless and eternal. This eBook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

Told from 3 powerful viewpoints: a French Catholic missionary, a Huron elder, and his adopted daughter in the 1600's. 5 stars.

MsMelissa This was a really tough read, but so worthwhile! The end really got to me, especially as one of my parent‘s closest friends is Wendat (Huron). (edited) 4y
LaraS I also liked this one, but I wish there was more to Gosling's story. I think there was so much more to explore from her perspective. 4y

Panpan

I‘m being kind and giving this a so-so. I kept waiting for SOMETHING to happen, but when something did, it was just meh. It felt emotionally flat, and definitely didn‘t move me. Also, I‘m baffled by the need to use sexual violence as a plot filler. It had NO meaning, it wasn‘t “needed” to move the story forward, and it wasn‘t dealt with in a thoughtful or caring way. I don‘t know why I finished it, really... and I‘ve talked myself into a pan 😅

TheAromaofBooks I've definitely done the “now that I'm reviewing this it's even worse than I thought“ thing before! 😂 4y

Mehso-so

Boyden's prose is beautiful, plot good, characters well-drawn-but the controversy over his claim to Metis heritage, and thus the foundation on which this novel rests, left me unsettled. It's a very dark story, by its very nature; I am not delicate but the detailed descriptions of torture were unnecessary after the first couple. Still, I recommend it as one way to understand the complicated relationships between 1st Nations people & Europeans.

I finished this on Saturday but I'm reviewing now b/c I needed time to let it sink in. This was a well-written story that made me think and gave me chills all at the same time. I'm glad I read it with you, @Leniverse or I may never have gotten through it! The ending almost destroyed me (I cried & I don't often cry with books) but ultimately filled me with hope. Not an easy read, & there were challenging sections, but it was well worth it. 5/5⭐️

Melissa_J Yup, the ending made me big-time cry too. 7y
Leniverse I was too stunned to cry. But I was screaming silently inside. I too am very glad to have had company with this book. 7y

@PurpleyPumpkin how are you doing with this? I just finished it. It gets brutal. Horrifically so. 😟🤢😢 I need to process the ending a bit. I also find that I wish we had an additional parallel narrative from a Haudenosaunee POV.

Using tobacco to stop bleeding? Is that a thing? Also... nicotine directly into the bloodstream? 😯😐At least 17th century tobacco probably didn't contain a fraction of the toxins of today's tobacco.

Daisey I don't know about open wounds, but chewed tobacco is actually helpful for bee/wasp stings. 7y

Part 2 Thoughts
*The 3 MCs have grown closer to each other. I was surprised to see how much they've come to care about each other. They seem surprised too. Will this somehow be their downfall?
(Continued ⬇️)

PurpleyPumpkin *The theme of "survival," while present through the story, seems to take centre stage on Part 2. The Wendat are concerned with the survival of their crops after the long drought that started the season. And then winter hits bringing with it an illness (the flu?) that decimates the Wendat. It seems that the survival of Christophe, Snow Falls and Carries an Axe are all in question when Bird learns that they've recently travelled to a village that... 7y
PurpleyPumpkin ...has been destroyed by the Haudenosaunee. 😳 7y
PurpleyPumpkin The violence and torture that occurred was so disturbing that I think I would have put this book aside for an extended break if we hadn't been reading this book together @Leniverse. Which is ironic, because now that we're on the verge of Part 3, I'm having a hard time putting it down! I still don't think any of this is going to end well, but I'm intrigued. 7y
See All 6 Comments
Leniverse Nice observation about the theme of survival. Yes, we've been through a lot of ways to die/survive here! Starvation, various diseases, war, torture... Everything but accidental death, I think. (Unless the averted mushroom poisoning counts. And I'm not sure that was accidental.) And yes, the violence was really bad. But I find their attitude to it fascinating. ⬇️ 7y
Leniverse What I really noticed was the focus on the individuals and the absence of groups, compared to part 1. The European powers seemed distant and inconsequential. We don't follow the trade party this time. They return with trade goods and prisoners. It's all personal. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. It's like part 2 was an interlude. The shoe has dropped, but it wasn't the one I expected. 7y
PurpleyPumpkin @leniverse I hadn't thought about the individual focus. Yes, that was definitely very central. 🤔 (edited) 7y

PurpleyPumpkin @Melissa_J It really is hard to read. I'm guessing that it doesn't get easier. *gulp* 7y
Melissa_J @PurpleyPumpkin nope, not at all. While hard to read, I think it necessary to the story. 7y

Father Christophe, you just lost ALL your brownie points. The first Christian "improvement" you wish to instil in people is to make them beat their children. ?

PurpleyPumpkin I took a picture of this exact same passage, but you posted first! We are obviously on the same wavelength. Christophe's righteous attitude just boggles my mind. He's so smug and superior, ugh! Add to that that he's wrong and it's super annoying. 😠 7y
Leniverse @PurpleyPumpkin A bit later on, however, he has some interesting insight about torture and the inquisition. I think Gosling is right about him. He's observant, but he doesn't always want to see. 7y

Thoughts on pt. 1.
Themes: Conflict and change. Between cultures and between people. Multiple nations/tribes + the Church, all bound on conquest and domination. All against all, but with uneasy alliances. How will these alliances change? There will be treachery.

People: Three characters all affecting each other.
The Crow - dogmatic and fanatic, "white superiority", but learning to respect/admire the "sauvages". (Cont. in comments)

Leniverse Surprisingly tolerant (even enthusiastic) about Huron burial practices (which are somewhat grisly! I have no moral high ground anymore, as I found them rather disturbing!) Prediction: Will be pushed into a conflict of interest, potential heresy. (Cont.) 7y
Leniverse Bird - conflict between death wish and duty to tribe. Falling Snow could be a catalyst either way. Falling Snow - really conflicted! A bit of Stockholm Syndrome clashing with bloodlust for vengeance. 7y
Leniverse @PurpleyPumpkin My thoughts on part 1. Starting part 2 today. 7y
See All 6 Comments
PurpleyPumpkin Wow, great observations! I'm a bit behind, but your thoughts spurred me on to finish Part 1 today. I really find the perspective of the three MCs representing the three main cultures/ peoples of the story compelling. It's fascinating that they all dislike each other, hate, even. Yet they continue on together. When Bird had the opportunity to severe ties with Snow Falls and Christophe, he opted to take a different course. 7y
PurpleyPumpkin And so we're on to Part 2 where the uneasy alliances made in Part 1 will play a part in the narrative, I think. It sounds like Christophe is again the lone Jesuit in the wilderness, and I don't think that bodes well for him. Snow Falls is interesting. In many ways, she exhibits her youth and naïveté, and in others seems quite mature. 7y
PurpleyPumpkin I don't know that she understands why she is drawn to Bird, but perhaps it is a bit of Stockholm Syndrome. It would make total sense. She's a stranger amongst Bird's people and she's been marginalized. But I feel like she's drawn to both Bird and Christophe in equal measure, or maybe she's just manipulating them. It's hard to say at this stage, but I'm looking forward to finding out more. 7y

Moving on in the #LitsyPartyOfOne. It's time to finish part 1 of the Orenda!
My partner is snoring on the sofa (we'll be celebrating his birthday tomorrow anyway), so I have taken to the gaming beanbag. The tiny mason jar in the top right corner contains Glenlivet. (My mother is appalled that I drink single malt (or indeed anything) from such a jar, but she's not Scottish, nor present, so I feel free to ignore her censure.)

vivastory Don't let your mom cramp your drinking style! 🍻 🍷 🍻 7y
PurpleyPumpkin It's Friday, so a "beverage" is a definite must! I have to disagree with your Mom on this one. ? BTW, I don't think I'll be able to finish part 1 until Sunday. The week was pretty busy & tomorrow isn't looking to be much better. Glad we decided to read this over 3 weeks!?? 7y
Leniverse @PurpleyPumpkin She wouldn't object to the beverage, just my lack of a proper whiskey tumbler. 😉 I have 35 pages to go now, so I'll be done tonight, but I won't be starting part 2 until next week. My hubby & I went to the Tears for Fears/Hall & Oates concert last & got our 80s on. We had a fabulous time & I took today off for recovery. Yup, I'm getting old! I'm spending some of today continuing this #buddyread, a story of early encounters between indigenous peoples & Europeans. It's very interesting, by turns thoughtful, poignant, & brutal. Love seeing the story told from such different POVs (3 of them). How are you liking it @Leniverse ?

AlaMich My wife and friends recently went to U2. Their conversation prior to leaving consisted of discussions about which shoes would be most comfortable and whether they would need their glasses. The times they have changed! 😂👵🏻 7y
PurpleyPumpkin @AlaMich 😂So you know of what I speak! I had the same concerns about footwear and went with flats, fashion be damned! Glasses would probably have helped (I actually have a prescription that needs filling). Yes, times have definitely changed. 7y
Leniverse Sorry for the late reply, I've been distracted. 😄 I found the Oranda a bit difficult to get into, what with three different nameless first person narratives, and a switch every two pages! 😆 But now the characters have been established the chapters are a bit longer and it's easy to tell who's who. 7y
See All 8 Comments
Leniverse Some initial thoughts: 1. That French missionary is pretty dense, and has sex on the brain. 2. Wow, magic. I expected communion with the land and the powers that be, but not actual manifestations of magic. 3. Shite, they're all gonna die, aren't they? It's that kinda book. 7y
PurpleyPumpkin @Leniverse I guess it was a bit confusing at first switching between the 3 POVs, but I'm finding it so interesting to see how much their thinking is so similar and yet they seem so different. It really struck me how they all think of each other as base, almost like animals, largely due to the language barrier. And yes, none of their futures seem particularly bright! 7y
PurpleyPumpkin @Leniverse Your initial thoughts were spot-on btw! 1. I was wondering about him too!! He's a BIT repressed. 2. I'm still not sure about the magic business. I mean, is it actual magic or just what the characters think is magic because they can't explain something? Maybe a bit of both? 3. Yup. 😔 7y
Leniverse Regarding no.1: The way he misconstrued the girl's actions when she lies down in the snow (ankles crossed even!). After he considered doing the same thing himself earlier! I just wanted to face palm him with a fistful of snow. 🙄 7y
PurpleyPumpkin @Leniverse 😂Agreed! I'm not sure how he got that so wrong. 7y

@PurpleyPumpkin Are we ready for this? I see the book has three parts, so maybe reading it over three weeks would be better. But we want it done this month, don't we. 😂 So how do we do this? Check in at intervals? Post some thoughts after each part? #buddyread

PurpleyPumpkin I'm totally ready, but I think your idea of reading each part per week is a good one. I finally took a look at the book & there's a lot packed into each chapter, more than I thought. 😳Yes, it'll take 3 weeks, which takes us into July, but I'm okay with that if you are. Although I thought we could finish it in June, I'm now feeling like that's a bit too ambitious. Along with all my other books that is! 3 weeks looks good to me!!👍🏽 7y

We spent the week in Niagara Falls celebrating our 25th anniversary. Discovered the Old Niagara Bookshop in Niagara-on-the-Lake and picked up The Orenda.

Laura: "My grandmother was African and from Mali. She moved to Switzerland when she was four, and then went to Paris to study. War erupted back home, so she could never go back. This book is part of a saga that takes place in the 17th century and is about the colonization of Canada. My Dad gave it to me and I am loving the story, because it reminds me of the fight for freedom that my grandmother passed on to me." #london

Mehso-so

I really wanted to like this book, in part because he is Canadian and also because I don't care for the way that the internet has been scrambling to arbitrate Boyden's identity: that's for him and the people who claim him. The book, however, was not great. I can definitely see where the APTN found the book's politics unsettling. Also: the first person narration gets really flat about a hundred pages in.

🙌🏼 The best thing to come from this controversy, besides the public discussion regarding Aboriginal identity and appropriation, is the added attention to indigenous authors. I mean, read Joseph Boyden if you want to, he's a talented writer, but he isn't an indigenous author. http://bzfd.it/2jc07rl

BookMusings This is crazy. I kind of think that if he embraced the culture and lived within it, that that kind of makes him a sort of insider. However he should not have accepted grants and other monies. Also, defs read Wagamese and Lindberg! (edited) 8y
teebe @BookMusings But that isn't how it works. Embracing a culture doesn't make someone part of it. There's no way to be an insider for a culture you're not part of because you don't have access to the same experiences or knowledge. The money is a definite no but it was only one part of the problem with Boyden. I haven't read anything by Lindberg yet but Wagamese is great. (edited) 8y
BookMusings I have an uncle that has spent his whole adult life in Colombia, and while I don't think he would say he is Colombian even though his daughters are, I think he qualifies as someone who is an insider. I think that's the line though... he could say he grew up in the culture (if true) or that he lives in a certain community, but not that he is actually indigenous. 😊 8y

BookMusings I guess it depends, was he part of the culture, or wasn't he. Regardless of his genetic makeup. 8y
BookishFeminist @BookMusings That example is kind of similar, but claiming indigenous ancestry is a much more complicated issue than that. It's far more than DNA and where one grew up, it's whether he actually belongs to the Native Nations he claims. He didn't grow up in the cultures he claims either, which makes his transgressions even worse. @teebe I saw this list yesterday and love it, thank you for sharing it here. 8y
teebe @BookMusings I see what you mean but insider to me implies not only participation and knowledge but also invitation, acceptance and authority. We may allow (allowance is key) ppl to participate in our cultures or to learn about them, but those people are basically guests. Still outsiders. Short of him having been adopted by Aboriginal parents as a child, I can't see how he would be an non-indigenous insider. 8y
teebe @bookmusings All in all, he'd have saved himself a lot of trouble if he was truthful in the first place. If he had started his career saying "I'm not indigenous but I have indigenous ancestry, I'm curious about that and I feel connected to that. I want to learn and bring indigenous issues to the forefront." (edited) 8y
teebe @BookishFeminist @bookmusings exactly. My problem is he's been speaking as an authority on Native issues but no one has given him that authority, except himself and white media. What gives him the right to speak for us? What elder has advised him? What community? There's a necessary connection that is missing here for him to have that right. (edited) 8y
BookishFeminist @teebe Yea, unacceptable. And all the awards and money he's received just add insult to injury when you think of all the authors it could have gone to instead. 8y
teebe @BookishFeminist the money is definitely a problem but what gets me the most is the opportunities he's been afforded by claiming to be indigenous, like being called as an honorary witness to the Truth and Reconciliation commission. That's huge. That's saying "we trust you to witness and carry forward our history for future generations." It's not a position that requires ancestry but he was given it based on his being an indigenous storyteller. (edited) 8y
BookMusings @teebe I agree about your idea about saying he had the ancestry but not trying to say he was indigenous. 😊 that would have made better sense. One thing I guess I don't see such a hard line about whether someone is an insider is because immigrants call themselves Canadian all the time. Or American also, and it's totally accepted. Doesn't even matter your ancestry... if you know and embrace the culture, and are accepted like you say. 8y
BookMusings @teebe I also find it very unfortunate that he has accepted so much opportunity that he wouldn't have otherwise been afforded. It's very sad and backward. 8y
teebe @bookmusings that's different. That's nationality, and nationality (where nationality is not tied to ethnicity) is a largely imagined culture. Immigrants apply for citizenship. Someone cannot just choose to be Aboriginal. (edited) 8y
BookishFeminist @teebe Yea, exactly, that's the biggest sticking point for me too. The recognition he's received has been based on a false claim. Not to mention he's said some pretty inaccurate and false things, such as he's "two-spirit," which a) he isn't, b) gives non-Indigenous folks a false idea of what two-spirit means. If he claims to be Indigenous, he's then seen as an authority. ? It's all really unfortunate & alarming to explore the implications. 8y
teebe @bookishfeminist oh man I wasn't even aware of the two-spirit claim. It's like every time I talk to people about him, I learn of a new claim he made. I know he's claimed to be from different nations at different times. Sounds to me like he's claiming whatever identity is convenient at the time. 8y
BookishFeminist @teebe Yea. He used it as "one foot in both worlds" or something like that. I believe he's apologized for this claim but don't quote me on it. Just ugh. 8y
teebe @BookishFeminist it's maddening and so disappointing. Especially because he IS a really talented writer and had he been upfront about his heritage and wanting to help with indigenous issues, he would have had support from Aboriginal communities. Now it's just... "ugh" is exactly the word. (edited) 8y

Fun Photo Friday. These aren't all Canadian books but so many of them are I thought I'd just take a shot of the shelf instead of dismantling it. I'm Canadian, I read a lot of Canadian authors. @Liberty

KVanRead I loved Three Day Road an this one's been on my TBR a while, along with Through Black Spruce. As a transplanted Canadian I'm thankful for my Canadian family and bookish friends for keeping in the CanLit loop!💋🇨🇦📚 8y
Bibliogeekery @KVanRead - The Orenda is a really intense read but is truly one of the most life-altering books I've ever read. I was so happy when it won Canada Reads. 8y
