Try to finish both Melmoth & Kindred
Start The Lost Apothecary
Ok story with a timeless feel and Gothic references leading to an actually satisfying reveal but my god the ending is just embarrassing.
Just finished this and sent it out for the last round of #lmpbc Thank you ladies for all the gothic literature reads!
It was an interesting read, definitely different from my normal picks. I liked the rich writing, characters, moral dilemmas, and creepiness, but the structure was a little too loose for me. Kinda jumpy.
Also, with the spooky bits going on in it, it counts for #scarathlon2021 #teamhendrix #screamathon #wickedathon
So I *still* haven‘t read The Essex Serpent (which I bought years ago for the lovely cover) but I read Melmoth for #LMPBC last month and liked it a lot, so I suppose I should?
This was a really good fall read that put me in mind of The Historian with an international, scholarly-type approach to a gothic ghost story. I loved not knowing what was real and what was all in the character‘s minds, and the ending! Total goosebumps.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Prompt: A DNF
This was one I just didn't like the writing. The plot was slow and never really connected with the characters.
This took me FOREVER to read, but it was enjoyable. I wanted it to be a little more creepy, but enjoyed the #gothic vibes that we got. And I always love when books are told with #mixedmedia elements. Read for #lmpbc
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️A sleepless night and a re-read (listen) to this eerie tale of the folklore figure Melmoth the Wanderer. Melmoth is doomed to witness the worst of humanity, forever alone seeking sinners to join her. #Scarathlon2020 #TeamSlaughter 15pts + 1pt
And with that, I have finished #Booked2020 - Summer Prompts

And I‘m also almost done with Fall already! I just need #ThinkPink which I‘m not sure what I‘m going to read yet and Bottom of your TBR, so we‘ll see what that is 😂
This book probably won‘t be for everyone. I wasn‘t really sure what to expect. I really enjoyed Essex Serpent, so I knew I had to read her other books. This was the perfect fall read. A little gothic and creepy, not sure what was going on. Historical fiction, reading notes from the past. Magical realism mixed in where you don‘t know what‘s real and what‘s not.

#Booked2020 - #ArmchairTravel - I now want to visit Prague
A peculiar book. It took me a while to get used to the style and I'm still not sure whether Melmoth was supposed to be real or just how the characters intepreted a guilty conscience, but then maybe that uncertainty is what the author was aiming for. I will read more of this author.
I have to be honest here and say that Melmoth didn‘t quite do it for me. I liked the premise, but the execution felt a bit clunky. It‘s a gothic novel set in modern Prague, containing the ghost stories of Melmoth that seem repetitive instead of compelling or interesting. The anachronism and redundancy made it difficult to keep my attention. I‘m starting to think that Sarah Perry just may not be the author for me.
I‘m not sure what I felt about this, but think it‘s a pick
We met Helen who through her friend Karel, is introduced to the legend of Melmoth, a woman who watches you and is a witness
Karel feel followed, and so does Helene. Karel gives Helen documentation that “proves” that Melmoth is more than a legend. This is different stories and among them is a story about a young boy before, during and after WWII in Prague. And his story will stay with me
#ThoughtfulThursday works hopefully well on a Wednesday too 🤪

Thanks for the tag @Buechersuechtling Sorry about being so late in answering
Oh my hat what a novel, read it in 2 days, the beat of the prose and the menace and the sense of Prague just carries you along with the whole gorgeous thing.
This started out great but towards the end I got bored and started speed reading.
And so completes my winter reading prompts for #booked2020 #covercrush
I mean, if you‘re going to be drunk, this is probably the best way to be so.

Really enjoying this story, if a little eerie at times.
Book #1 of 2020 (I know, I know...January was not a good month!) was Melmoth by Sarah Perry. I've rated it so-so because, whereas I really enjoyed the super descriptive prose style, I didn't really feel gripped by the story until after halfway through. It felt like a bit of a slog and the ending was a bit meh for my liking. That said, it has inspired me to revisit Perry's The Essex Serpent which I had tried to read and then abandoned!
Just finished this one. Beautifully written and evocative, with some difficult subject matter at times. Would recommend.
#audiobooking while I put finishing touches to this Leuchtturm sleeve. #workworkwork
Thrilled to share that my January pick for #ReadwithMrBook #1WordTitle was MELMOTH by Sarah Perry. Creepy and gothic, not my usual fare, but I had to read it after enjoying The Essex Serpent. While she tells an excellent story and while I definitely consider this a page turner, what stands out about Perry is how she uses language to create atmosphere and a sense of dread. She excels at painting with words and draws you in from the first page!🤓
Beautiful writing but slow. I felt this way about The Essex Serpent as well. Melmoth is a doomed woman that wanders the earth witnessing terrible deeds done by people and then preys on their guilt and despair to join her as a companion.
When your indecisive at the airport bookstore and there's a sale. (I think the ale is always on, but I usually don't like the options. Today, it was hard to select just three!)
I really liked this very atmospheric and creepy story written with great skill which absorbed me from beginning to end. Melmoth, a spirit, the woman who went to the open cave after the crucifixion denies seeing jesus and is doomed to wander forever drawing sinners to her. The bk, set in Prague, finds Helen drawn into the mystery of lost papers abt melmoth, +we see stories of crimes as well as helen's own mystery. A great rd for dark winter nights.
This was good! Gothic, sinister, sad. It felt historical despite being largely contemporary. A good story, well told; I loved the writing (ps my one complaint about library books; shiny covers!)
“Do you see her? Has she come?” Melmoth the Watcher is cursed to bear witness to the worst of humanity; be careful not to attract her attention, least you be doomed to join her. The descriptions of Prague are magical, the story one of sorrow and loss, is there hope for redemption?
For the second day of my own personal #spooktober is modern gothic horror. Plus the cover is fantastic. Melmoth the Witness is always watching. We read this for Episode 34!
This was not only a beautiful book to look at, it was also a beautiful book to read. It has such an air of melancholy but also a touch of hope, the kind of hope a drowning man clutches at to the end. The writing itself was almost dreamlike, poetic & lyrical. It‘s an adaptation of the story of Melmoth the wanderer, a woman condemned to walk the earth alone forever unless she can persuade the guilty to join her. Perfect for #SomethingWickedFall
Up next is a book that I started awhile ago but wasn‘t quite in the mood for, but I need some #gothichorror for this months #SomethingWickedFall #readathon and thought this may fit the bill. I‘m a few more chapters in and I‘m hooked! Guess I‘m in the mood for it now.👁👁
Is the legendary figure of the Melmoth a #human or something of gothic folklore? For the protagonist in this novel, she‘s about to find out the truth... #ayupaugust
Thank you so much @TheLibrarian My books arrived today. I'm looking forward to reading them 😸
#95kgiveaway
FINALLY finished this! I don‘t want to say too much because there‘s still one #LMPBC‘er waiting to read it but it‘s a “Pick” for me. I get what others are saying about it being slow. It IS. Much of it‘s *painfully* slow, but it‘s an intentionally-set pace that matches the book‘s themes (dread, guilt, shame, history). I don‘t know if I always ”enjoy” Sarah Perry‘s books but I‘m always impressed by her craft. And there‘s real emotion to be found.
Thanks for the #giveaway @TheLibrarian and congrats on 95K! ❤️ I would love to win Melmoth and Looker. 😊 #95kgiveaway
Testing out our new tent before our camping trip in a few weeks. I approve. 🙌🏻

I haven‘t posted for the #bookfitnesschallenge yet this week but I‘ve completed 2/4 walks!
I‘m failing horribly at my hydration challenge...but at least I‘m thinking about it??? 🤷♀️🙈 No more books finished yet but I‘m making good headway on the tagged book (“Melmoth” for #LMPBC) & my non-fiction audiobook, “The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple.” Oh, and I only have a handful of poems left in “Electric Arches“!
