The Trumpet of the Swan
The Trumpet of the Swan | E. B. White
34 posts | 87 read | 10 to read
Now available for the first time as an ebook! Illustrations in this ebook appear in vibrant full color on a full-color device and in rich black-and-white on all other devices. This beloved book by E. B. White, author of Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, is a classic of children's literature that perfectly describes what it's like to march to the beat of your own drummer. Louis is a trumpeter swan, but unlike the rest of his family, he can't make a sound. And since he can't trumpet his love, the beautiful swan Serena pays no attention to him. But when his father steals him a real brass trumpet, Louis has to find out if it's the key to what he's wanted all along. E. B. White's classic book is a tender novel of overcoming the odds and learning to do things on your own terms. It will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come. It contains evocative illustrations by Fred Marcellino, the acclaimed illustrator of Puss in Boots and I, Crocodile, among many other books. Correlates to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts

“The sky," he wrote on his slate, "is my living room. The woods are my parlor. The lonely lake is my bath. I can't remain behind a fence all my life.” Trumpet…

Winter break for my pod is over and new episodes are BACK! I‘m thrilled to welcome Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka for the first show of 2023 — and to chat about a book that has personal significance to each of us, E.B. White‘s The Trumpet of the Swan. 🦢 Together, we (swan) dive into a conversation that covers ableism, capitalism, married animals, dad jokes and more. 🎺 Link to listen in my bio!

Like the rest of his family, Louis is a trumpeter swan. But Louis is unable to trumpet!! In fact, he can't even make a sound. His father steals a trumpet to help Louis in wooing the beautiful swan Serena…a classic E. B. White.

I remember enjoying this one when I was young. This time around, I listened to the audiobook as read by the author. The inclusion of actual trumpeting was a pleasant surprise. The story was endearing & written in true E.B. White style, including natural references, definitions of some of the more challenging words for middle grade readers, and some arithmetic instruction sprinkled in. A fantastic and nostalgic wonder of a reread.

I did a quick read of this book to help my grandson with a book report. I can‘t believe how much I enjoyed it. E.B. White had a way of making animals come to life. I thought it was magical but I can see why it might be a difficult read for a third grader. I believe it‘s important for children to read classic literature even though our language has changed a lot since when the book was written. I think it gives them a sense of history.

Lcsmcat Not just a sense of history, but also the empathy that comes from seeing how common most emotions are, across the world and across the centuries. And, Shakespeare be my witness, good language remains good language. Good for his school to recognize that! 6y
Shley9225 I read this book in grade four and absolutely loved it! One of my favourites that was ever assigned 6y
suvata @Lcsmcat I completely agree with you. 6y

My daughter asked me if we could have our own book club, so I decided to create a blog where parents and kids could read a book together and discuss it. I just posted our first set of book notes over “Trumpet of the Swan” (her pick). If you want to discuss with us, check out http://www.novelparents.com. I‘m hoping to set up some Buddy Reads on Litsy designed for middle grades soon!! #novelparents #trumpetoftheswan #kidsbookclub

The trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White and illustrated by Edward Frascino is a MF Novel that would make for an awesome AS or LC. The novel tells the story of Louie a Trumpeter Swan who was born without a voice and desperately searched for ways to communicate so he could live a normal Swan life. ESOL: 5. Teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. UDL: 3.1 Activate of supply background knowledge.

ChristinB I love that this story incorporates music! I also looked at your link and I love the idea of mapping the places the main character goes. It will help knock out a couple social studies standards! I love it!❤️ 7y

Finally Bella and I finished! It was a bit of a slog at times but she was enamoured by the swan love story and has been shouting "ko-hoh!" at random intervals the whole time we've been reading. It hasn't replaced Charlotte's Web as her favourite book though, and we both found the old cob annoying: "he goes on a bit" was her verdict ? (picture credit goes to Bella) #raising readers

The latest development chez s'moores calls for a big glass of iced twine and possibly a pair of noise cancelling headphones. 😬

Suet624 The Trumpet of the Swan. That's great. I was also wondering what you were going to do with the iced twine but I finally figured it out. A cello, while huge, is so much easier for the ears to embrace. 8y

saresmoore @Suet624 The iced twine (tea wine) will settle the reverberations in my brain (I hope). I will be putting on lots of cello music to encourage her in that direction, or possibly just to drown out her trumpeting! 8y

I read this aloud to my 6 and 9 year old daughters. We all loved it. Lena (pictured) is a total animal-lover and books about animals are her favorite. She brought this book home from her classroom library. It was a cute story; fun to read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #kiddielit T for #LitsyAtoZ

"Whether you like him or not, he must be treated with respect."

The boys and I are constantly delighted by the stories of E.B. White. A trip to the library isn't complete without checking out one of his audiobooks (charmingly read by the author himself). Today's excerpt seemed especially timely. I love when a children's author can state an important truth in such a way that even an adult can understand it. :)

Lmstraubie I listened to this for the 1st time about 2 months ago. I didn't realize it was him until the end. I think you will really enjoy Some Writer ☺ 8y
mcipher I didn't know he read them!! Next road trip. 😊 He is such an amazing author. 8y
KCorter @lmstraubie I think I prefer the audio because his voice makes the stories even more cozy and heartwarming. I actually didn't even know about Some Writer until Litsy! I immediately added it to my TBR. I think I'll pick it up when we finish The Trumpet of the Swan. :) 8y
KCorter @mcipher Listening to Charlotte's Web (and Harry Potter) is our road trip tradition. I think The Trumpet of the Swan will be added to the rotation. :) 8y

"These were the pleasantest days of Sam's life, these days in the woods, far, far from everywhere - no automobiles, no roads, no people, no noise, no school, no homework, no problems, except the problem of getting lost. And of course, the problem of what to be when he grew up. Every boy has that problem."

#TheWisdomofEBWhite

KCorter This is exactly how I felt (and still feel) about camping. There is a kind of magic in isolation. I felt most myself when mundane distractions faded away and I was left with my most basic needs and desires. Maybe it's an introvert thing, but I find time alone necessary to my survival. 8y
EloisaJames I think there are few better sounds that the click of the door as it closes after the last of my (beloved) family members, giving me a day to myself. 8y
