I don't think anyone is too old to read about Louis and his trumpet.

My favorite E.B. White novel. 💙🖤🩵
Winter break for my pod is over and new episodes are BACK! I‘m thrilled to welcome Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka for the first show of 2023 — and to chat about a book that has personal significance to each of us, E.B. White‘s The Trumpet of the Swan. 🦢 Together, we (swan) dive into a conversation that covers ableism, capitalism, married animals, dad jokes and more. 🎺 Link to listen in my bio!
Like the rest of his family, Louis is a trumpeter swan. But Louis is unable to trumpet!! In fact, he can't even make a sound. His father steals a trumpet to help Louis in wooing the beautiful swan Serena…a classic E. B. White.

I remember enjoying this one when I was young. This time around, I listened to the audiobook as read by the author. The inclusion of actual trumpeting was a pleasant surprise. The story was endearing & written in true E.B. White style, including natural references, definitions of some of the more challenging words for middle grade readers, and some arithmetic instruction sprinkled in. A fantastic and nostalgic wonder of a reread.
I did a quick read of this book to help my grandson with a book report. I can‘t believe how much I enjoyed it. E.B. White had a way of making animals come to life. I thought it was magical but I can see why it might be a difficult read for a third grader. I believe it‘s important for children to read classic literature even though our language has changed a lot since when the book was written. I think it gives them a sense of history.

My daughter asked me if we could have our own book club, so I decided to create a blog where parents and kids could read a book together and discuss it. I just posted our first set of book notes over “Trumpet of the Swan” (her pick). If you want to discuss with us, check out http://www.novelparents.com. I‘m hoping to set up some Buddy Reads on Litsy designed for middle grades soon!! #novelparents #trumpetoftheswan #kidsbookclub
When ever I think #swan this is the book that immediately comes to mind. #12daysofchristmas
The trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White and illustrated by Edward Frascino is a MF Novel that would make for an awesome AS or LC. The novel tells the story of Louie a Trumpeter Swan who was born without a voice and desperately searched for ways to communicate so he could live a normal Swan life. ESOL: 5. We are in the middle of a piecemeal short-distance move....despite closing on Monday, this is the only (paper) book in our new house so far (by way of being our current bedtime read-aloud). 🙀 Looking forward to getting the rest of the 📚📚📚 over here soon!!
Finally Bella and I finished! It was a bit of a slog at times but she was enamoured by the swan love story and has been shouting "ko-hoh!" at random intervals the whole time we've been reading. It hasn't replaced Charlotte's Web as her favourite book though, and we both found the old cob annoying: "he goes on a bit" was her verdict ? (picture credit goes to Bella) #raising readers
The latest development chez s'moores calls for a big glass of iced twine and possibly a pair of noise cancelling headphones. 😬
Just started this with my hard-to-please youngest one. She has declared Charlotte's Webb her "best book EVER" so I'm hoping she'll let us get to the end of this one! #raisingreaders
I read this aloud to my 6 and 9 year old daughters. We all loved it. Lena (pictured) is a total animal-lover and books about animals are her favorite. She brought this book home from her classroom library. It was a cute story; fun to read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #kiddielit T for #LitsyAtoZ
"The world is full of talkers, but it is rare to find anyone who listens. And I assure you that you can pick up more information when you are listening than when you are talking." Teacher resource : livinglaughingandloving.com/2013/01/trumpet-of-the-swan-free-printable.html #UCFLAE3414sp17
"Whether you like him or not, he must be treated with respect."
The boys and I are constantly delighted by the stories of E.B. White. A trip to the library isn't complete without checking out one of his audiobooks (charmingly read by the author himself). Today's excerpt seemed especially timely. I love when a children's author can state an important truth in such a way that even an adult can understand it. :)

"These were the pleasantest days of Sam's life, these days in the woods, far, far from everywhere - no automobiles, no roads, no people, no noise, no school, no homework, no problems, except the problem of getting lost. And of course, the problem of what to be when he grew up. Every boy has that problem."

#booktober Day 18: #favoritefriendships
Is there a friendship that compares with that between a spider and a pig? Or between a boy and a swan?
#augustphotochallenge #whitespines This was fun! I loved topping it off with T. H. White and E. B. White. And I loved The Trumpet of the Swan (also frequently white) even more than Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little. That White sure could write! 😊
