Heat and Light
Heat and Light: A Novel | Jennifer Haigh
Acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Haigh returns to the Pennsylvania town at the center of her iconic novel Baker Towers in this ambitious, achingly human story of modern America and the conflicting forces at its hearta bold, moving drama of hope and desperation, greed and power, big business and small-town families. Forty years ago, Bakerton coal fueled the country. Then the mines closed, and the town wore away like a bar of soap. Now Bakerton has been granted a surprise third act: it sits squarely atop the Marcellus Shale, a massive deposit of natural gas. To drill or not to drill? Prison guard Rich Devlin leases his mineral rights to finance his dream of farming. He doesnt count on the truck traffic and nonstop noise, his brothers skepticism or the paranoia of his wife, Shelby, who insists the water smells strange and is poisoning their frail daughter. Meanwhile his neighbors, organic dairy farmers Mack and Rena, hold out against the drillinguntil a passionate environmental activist disrupts their lives. Told through a cast of characters whose lives are increasingly bound by the opposing interests that underpin the national debate, Heat and Light depicts a community blessed and cursed by its natural resources. Soaring and ambitious, it zooms from drill rig to shareholders meeting to the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor to the ruined landscape of the strippins, haunting reminders of Pennsylvanias past energy booms. This is a dispatch from a forgotten Americaa work of searing moral clarity from one of the finest writers of her generation, a courageous and necessary book.

Great writing and character building. Some really good lines in it but I found she dropped each character at the end and not in a suspense filled way but like I over them each life sucks. Lol still not a bad read

Bakerton became a #timebombtown after all the coal mines that sustained it closed. Now they may get a reprieve from the nearby natural gas deposits.

I read the prequel to this book, Baker Town, so when I saw this was an old BOTM selection, obviously it ended up in one of my boxes. 🤷🏼‍♀️ #soaringscores

BarbaraBB I drove through Centralia, Pennsylvania this summer, a similar town. Completely deserted because of the gas. Chilling. 5y

Been meaning to get to this one for a while, and I really, really liked it. So many characters, but they‘re well crafted and connected to each other in interesting ways, so I didn‘t find it hard to keep track of who‘s who. Goodreads reminds me that I‘ve read two other Jennifer Haigh books and really liked them as well. :)

Fantastic writing. Haigh has so completely envisioned the small town of Bakerton. I feel like I could drive there. There were passages in this book that were deeply moving and resonant. Still, I think overall there was too much going on, like Haigh just couldn't leave some of her ideas on the table. Too many characters and diversionary chapters distracted from the core narratives and left me a bit frustrated.

Jemmygem Ok yes and I found she just dropped them all at the end. Like such good build up to have each story not really end well. 1y

It's #BOTM Day! My favorite holiday. 😃 I will be celebrating later with a nice bubble bath. I still have NO IDEA what I'm getting. Definitely Evelyn Hugo, definitely Heat & Light. Possibly The Sister Chase, Chemistry, and White Fur. Or do I need the add on Arundahti Roy? Looks like we get a complimentary luggage tag this month but it appears that you need to physically add it to your box, so make sure to do so! And tell me what you're getting!

Reviewsbylola Before I scare anyone, Heat & Light is a very old title. I think it was April or May 2016. 😂 7y
KarenUK Definitely Evelyn Hugo... not sure what else yet! 7y
kiminreverse I might get Chemistry and add the Roy, or I might skip. I've had library holds in for awhile now for Evelyn Hugo and Chemistry, and I don't think i'm interested in the other three. 7y

Aswenson I'm thinking Heat & Light and Chemistry. Not sure about the add one yet! 😍 I'll be stalking the site all day to choose!! 7y
Cityofamber I'm thinking Chemistry, and the sisters chase maybe adding and we're off from the "others favorites" but maybe what the judges say will change my mind ;) 7y
Megabooks Luggage tag!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 7y
Reviewsbylola I do think the judges may heavily influence me this month. I usually decide before their blurbs are even up but this time I'm so conflicted. @Amberboston1 7y
Lissa00 I'll have to do some research on these. It's the first month I have considered skipping...but I really want the luggage tag😂 7y
BekahB @Lissa00 HA!! I thought the same thing when I saw that luggage tag. I was considering skipping too. I'm kind of interested in Chemistry, so maybe I'll get that one. 7y
Cinfhen Ohhhh, I'm all about the luggage tag!!! Thanks @Reviewsbylola 7y
LisaJo Thanks for mentioning the luggage tag. I probably would not have seen it and added it to my box without all of you posting about it. Usually they just put the gifts in the box, but this time if you don't pick it, you don't get it. I guess? Strange. 7y
Reviewsbylola I know! I worried a lot of people wouldn't realize so I'm glad it was helpful. Maybe they figured some people wouldn't be interested? Personally I don't drink wine so had it been an option to opt out of the wine koozie a few months ago I would have! @LisaJo (edited) 7y

An emotionally moving story about how the introduction of fracking in a community can deeply affect the lives of its small-town residents. Behind a backdrop of economic depravity, the fracking gold rush & grassroot politics, Haigh's well-developed characters encompass all the hopes & challenges of Americans today struggling with their lives being pulled on by seen & unforeseen public & finanical decisions which weigh on their future. -Casey

Normally I avoid "issue" fiction (I go to nonfiction for that), but a review prompted me to pick up this novel about the consequences of fracking for one small PA town. It's a composite portrait--lots of point-of-view characters--that becomes more than the sum of its parts while offering small satisfactions in each part. Strengths are character specification and authorial control/vision.

An intimate epic-lite, what I'd hoped City on Fire had been, but wasn't. Topical plot, interesting (and unpredictable) characters, and a Forster-esque quality of 'always connect'. I love that! Another great author I'd never heard of before. Story underscores the extent to which 'what lies beneath' - literally and figuratively - matters far more than we give it credit for. I'd lived in this area a while so people and places felt very familiar.

Loved this NPR piece. A great quote within from Jennifer Haigh about reading fiction: "It's really the best technology we have to get inside another person's mind...So I think in a moment like right now, after we've just experienced this very divisive election, which seems to me like the ultimate failure of empathy, that now more than ever it's important for us to read searchingly, to read about people who are nothing like ourselves." ❤️

Christine I loved the titles pictured that I've read (Sweetgirl, The Round House, American Salvage) and may have to add the rest to the TBR! (http://www.npr.org/2016/12/22/506476143/still-puzzled-by-the-election-authors-prescribe-fiction-for-better-understanding) 8y

vivastory I totally agree with that quote. Nonfiction work is undoubtedly essential for historical understanding, but there are certain areas fiction is able to explore that no other type of writing is able to. What a great list. 8y
Christine @vivastory Well said, and agreed re the list! 8y
Suet624 I often feel that it's those who don't read need to start doing so. We readers already delve into other cultures. 8y

This is today's @bookriot daily book deal. I've looked at it a few times and picked it up because $1.99 is hard to beat. The storyline is compelling, particularly given my academic background (environmental policy). To be honest, a lot of people have had to make choices like those presented and I suspect many more of us will be in this position as easily accessible oil/gas reserves dwindle.

The references to Mousetrap in this book were spot on, as I find that game overly complicated with too many pieces. There is so much going on in this novel about fracking, community, addiction, loneliness, family, marriage...I had trouble keeping the pieces straight. Haigh is a talented writer and brought it together in the end, but it just felt unfocused.
