Does anyone know of an Australian book challenge to hook up to next year? I'm doing a Brit book challenge this year & am planning ahead. I'd appreciate a point in the right direction

RealLifeReading There's an Australian women writers challenge for this year. Not sure about next year though http://australianwomenwriters.com/sign-up/ 8y
Bookhound1 @RealLifeReading Thanks! I will check it out 👌 8y

“I tried to think back to earlier in the evening, to where the argument started. We were having such a good time. I‘d done grilled prawns with lots of chilli and coriander, and we were drinking this delicious Chen Blanc that he‘d been given by a grateful client. We were out on the patio...

Overall, this book couldn‘t hold my interest. If the environmental catastrophe was addressed more and the dialogue was more intriguing, if it wasn‘t a makeshift tragedy with characters you just couldn‘t care about….maybe then I could have finished the book.

DebinHawaii Bummer--from the description it sounds like it would be good 🙁 8y
Bookhound1 @DebinHawaii Maybe it's just not for me. I just finished reading The Twelve by Justin Cronin so my bar for apocalyptic is high. Oh well. 8y

I did the read along and I didn't sign up. Anyway, got up at 5:30 this morning and read for 3 hours before anyone was up. I am now 75% done with The Twelve. Aja kept me company while I read. Well read Shiba Inu #readathon

I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of this book. If I hadn't been so immersed in The Twelve by Cronin I would have started it immediately. It's on deck next.

Everything I've tried from this cookbook had been fantastic ! ❤️👍This chicken and sausage Paella is a keeper. Great recipes, easy to follow and no fuss ingredients.

Michelle_mck I love Curtis his recipes are amazing, and he is a great Aussie too 👍🏻 8y
Bookhound1 @Michelle_mck I hadn't heard of him until our online cooking club featured him. He's amazing! 8y

Maeve Binchy was a wonderful storyteller. She could weave a plot with so many characters, all their lives intersecting with one another and yet, you wouldn‘t be confused about what was going on in their lives. It was a sad day when she died. Ireland lost a treasure

I read this book a while back. A friend was talking to me about magic words that draw you to a book when browsing at the store or library. What are your attractors? I wrote about it here :
https://novelmeals.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/magic-words-in-book-blurbs/

DebinHawaii Great post! I'll get over & comment on it at some point. My top words/things that will make me at least explore a book more, if not buy are food & culinary references; a setting in Hawaii, Japan, India, or Britain; mystery/thrillers/police/FBI, set among books/book places, WWII, & Jane Austen/P&P. 8y

I can't put The Twelve down! Read a few chapters, pour a bourbon and read some more before bedtime.

MrBook I haven't tried Barterhouse. 8y
BookBabe Me neither, but I want to. How is it? 8y
Bookhound1 @MrBook @BookBabe It's great! It's an orphan barrel project bourbon so we bought 3 bottles. But now it's gone 😪 8y

I'm about 20% into this book, it's great! It's too hot to ride now so I can tuck into my book this weekend. If virals come after us I guess we could try and ride far, far away!

Gulfsidemusing Stay cool!😎 8y
DebinHawaii I read The Passage eons ago & liked it but have not had the time or gumption to tackle this one yet & saw the 3rd one came out a couple months ago... 😬 8y
Bookhound1 @Lakesidemusing Thanks! It's more the humidity here, at least today. I will read today. @DebinHawaii My husband bought book 3 on Kindle so I'm reading this one now, will borrow his kindle after I finish The Twelve. It's engaging. 8y

Overall, I will pass this book on to the library as there isn‘t much I would actually cook from these recipes. If I were into desserts I may love the book but yeah….not a winner for me. I won't eat rose petals. Or kale.

https://novelmeals.wordpress.com/2016/07/12/i-dont-want-to-eat-rose-petals/

DebinHawaii @Bookhound1 Oh, you kale hater you! 😉 8y
Bookhound1 @DebinHawaii but I like other veggies! Kale just doesn't do it for me. I know it's popular. You can have mine 😉 8y
DebinHawaii @Bookhound1 Just giving you crap. It's OK to not like kale. 8y

This cookbook isn't pedestrian, so-so book laid out like so many others. This is an extraordinary cookbook, beautifully photographed with easy to follow recipes. There are numerous recipes I would like to try but I started with one for salmon.

Love how he ties things together at the end, finding parallels between Graham & Luke. They were teenaged boys with 40 years between the disappearances but there were indeed comparisons. Each book includes Banks musical education.I'm on book 14 now and his taste in music evolves each time. Fav author

This is one of my favorite cookbooks by Nigel Slater. You get lost in the visuals as you read his magnificent prose, describing things so well you can taste it, you can feel the cool breeze in his garden, smell the alluring aroma of an exotic dish he's cooking. Definitely for Anglophiles & cooks. ❤️

MrBook Beautiful! 8y

Missing, Presumed | Susie Steiner

What happened to the brilliant Cambridge student Edith Hind? The first 72 hours are crucial to find a missing person alive, the clock is running from the start of this novel. This isn‘t a slam dunk, a mystery figured out early on. That‘s a wonderful thing to be surprised when you reading a mystery.

To be forewarned, French isn‘t a cozy mystery writer. To me, this one is so well written and may be my favorite in the series. So far. By the 81% mark on my Kindle I was thrown for a loop – something I did not see coming, a twist in the story. Honestly, I couldn‘t put this one down.

I‘d say I got totally invested in this story after a few chapters, more than I usually read before getting hooked. But then, let me tell you, it becomes a pager turner & there are twists & surprises I never saw coming. Great story. Love it when I can‘t see the ending& we have some surprises.

Mehso-so

Everyone encourages Claire. It seems she has good friends & lovely boyfriend but she pushes them away at times by being over sensitive and worse, not holding her tongue when she drinks too much. This isn‘t a format I love when reading a book but I did find it humorous and finished the book.
