This is my first read by Susie Steiner, it is also the first in a series. This book was all over the place and every now and then Manon's love life would pop in and out. Not sure if it was to be a distraction from the true plot or a way that Steiner was trying to build the character. The plot was still interesting enough that I wanted to find out what happened to the missing student. I'm not interested in continuing with the series.

This is a very interesting book. It takes police procedural as a starting point with a missing persons case. But Susie Steiner has an astonishing gift for characters and it becomes so much about them, relationships, loneliness, love, grief and social responsibility. All the while a thread of humour keeps it from getting too heavy. Not for those who like intricate and original plotting. But could see Elizabeth George and Anne Cleeves fans loving it

This book was a little bit of a disappointment to me. The premise of the story, the disappearance of a bright, talented college student and the response of her wealthy parents, seemed intriguing but the execution fell a little flat. I had trouble engaging with characters in a meaningful manner and didn‘t find a strong emotional connection with the story. The writing was good and the premise promising, but not a score for me.

LiteraryinPA I agree. I read this as a Book of the Month selection years ago and was totally disappointed. 5y
TheAromaofBooks I remember reading both this book and its sequel and thinking that I would have liked them better if there wasn't quite so much about the main character's personal (i.e. sex) life. It put me off a bit as it didn't seem to add to the story OR make me like her any more! 5y
Come-read-with-me @LiteraryinLititz @TheAromaofBooks Thank you both so much for your comments!!! I thought I was really missing something because I‘ve read good things about the author. The descriptions about the life of the main character were way over board. 5y

(Day 15 - #Missing)

*This Cambridge-based novel is a better-than-average police procedural. At 39, DS Manon Bradshaw fears she‘s fast approaching her sell-by date. All she wants is a personal life, maybe a family. What she gets is a parade of disappointing Internet dates and sleepless nights. But this case offers interesting possibilities, both professionally and personally. Steiner has published a sequel; a third book is on the way.

squirrelbrain Sounds great - stacked! ❤️ 5y

Hmmm, I did not love this book. It was not suspenseful, I immediately had suspicions about several characters that were proven to be true. I mean, I finished the book, but I will not be looking for the sequels. I found Manon to be really difficult to root for, and just didn‘t really care by the time I got the (predictable) ending. This is halfway between pan and so-so. Watching Us and knitting mittens with my best buddy Dieter.

I was so disappointed in my original choice for #femaledetective that I decided to try again with this one. A UK police procedural with not 1 but 2!! female detectives who are heading up a high profile missing person's case. I'm a hooked and happy reader. #booked2019 @4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage

Cinfhen I didn‘t love this one but I‘m thrilled that it‘s capturing your attention 😀 6y
valeriegeary @Cinfhen the funny thing is... This is my 2nd attempt at reading this one. I picked it up a while back from the library but really couldn't get into it. Then someone mentioned it to me again recently and I thought I'd give it another go and for whatever reason it's working for me this time. Go figure. 😄🤷 6y
Cinfhen I love when that happens!! It actually took me 3 tries before I settled into Commonwealth, which ended up being a five star read!! Sometimes, it really is all about right time, right book! 6y

This was my first Susie Steiner read and I loved it! I could totally see this as a BBC show, a dark copper drama like Luther or Broadchurch. In fact, Davey reminded me of Justin Ripley from Luther.

Can't wait for book two!

Well, I went to Barnes and Noble to buy more Megan Miranda YA novels but they were completely sold out and told me one wasn‘t even available ever again. So I purchased: Missing, Presumed by Susie Steiner, The Good Girl by Mary Kubica, and Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco. Then I came home and ordered Vengeance and Hysteria both by Megan Miranda. Hysteria is supposedly the one no longer available. I have a book problem? #readallthebooks

Recommended by a friend, this was a slow read. However, Detective Sergeant Manon Bradshaw is a flawed believable character. Had guessed the ending but it was still a good read simply because of Bradshaw and her relationships with the other police officers in Cambridgeshire police team, as well as the person missing, Edith Hind. Also the ambience of the novel and the place adds in to the gloom of the text.

The plot is quite a slow burner, it draws you in gradually and then the pace picks up.It‘s very much character driven and delves into human relationships and psyche. I enjoy a mystery which has a human interest rather than one that contains gory murder scenes so this one fits the bill for me. I prefer a conundrum and this one was certainly puzzling! There are a few red herrings and the conclusion is a surprising one, albeit a little far fetched.
