May in Review.

Pretty solid reading month, which is a surprise as May is usually a low month for me. The best of the month was The Silence of Monsters and Rainbow Black.

Had a pretty decent reading month. A lower Average rating than normal, but a lot were just solid three star books. #MonthinReview

#MonthInReview

Had a pretty good reading month, I enjoyed several of these books. The best by far was The Heart Principle. Least favorite was a toss up between Heart & Seoul and The Brothers.

Gissy Wow!!!📚📚📚📚📚👏👏👏👏👏 3y

Hey @TrishB look what I just found neatly tucked away in the drawer!! 😆 I haven‘t even read them! They‘re old (esp as they‘re pre-covids!) but books don‘t really go out of date so I‘ll read em and pass em on. 😉 (which reminds me, I haven‘t bought a newspaper now for monthsssss! 😲)

TrishB Oh cool 👍🏻👍🏻 I haven‘t been to the PO for months 😁 4y
Jee_HookedOnBookz How can I get my hands on those magazines? They're gorgeous!! 4y
squirrelbrain I stopped buying the Sunday papers and bought the Sunday Times this weekend for the first time in months. There were hardly any book reviews though. 😕 I‘ve still been buying the Sat Times as I do the cryptic crossword with my Mum (over the phone!) 4y

Caroline2 @TrishB Me neither Trish. It‘s hard at the mo isn‘t it. 4y
Caroline2 @Jee_HookedOnBookz They come with The Guardian Saturday news paper and they are soooo good. A lot of the reviews are written by other authors. 👍 (edited) 4y
Caroline2 @squirrelbrain I stopped too Helen. It used to be a bit of a routine for me to get The Guardian on a Saturday morning. I might get back into it this wkend. 😉 (edited) 4y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @Caroline2 that's just so brilliant!!! 4y

Hello Litsy friends. Just sharing our podcast episode in which we discuss reviews themselves. After recording the podcast I asked #MomoToles why he was being so noisy and this is the look he gave me 😔. Let us know what you want and don‘t want to see in reviews. https://anchor.fm/bookish-impulses/episodes/An-Honest-Discussion-About-Book-Revi... #BookishImpulsesPodcast #podcast #BIP #dogsoflitsy

When given donations at the library I always look up reviews before I decide if I want to add it to our collection or not. I stumbled upon this review last night when I was researching a book (not the one tagged) and I couldn't stop laughing. This is my kind of review 😂😂

So I‘ve been looking for a site like Litsy that‘s for movies. I think I may have found it in SmashBomb (though I doubt the community is as tops as this one). You can review everything on this site! App is a little glitchy but the browser version works fine. Add me if you join (same name as here. TheBookDream. #underemployedadventures

CouronneDhiver What‘s it called? 6y
TheBookDream @CouronneDhiver Sorry! It‘s called Smashbomb. Like Goodreads you can enter drawings for stuff to review. It‘s a wider variety of items though. Seems cool. 6y

I‘ve been so busy in the last couple of weeks that I‘ve not been able to polish off and post all my reviews...and so many amazing books! I must get them up on blog and Goodreads! I finished two of these today (one was mostly a reread but still), I hate being behind. Reading any?

I sometimes get annoyed when authors, or authors friends comment on reviews. I only ever have it happen for children's books. I was just sent a message that I must not read a lot of children's books or i would know that most children's books sound like they were written by children, and that so and so's son loves the book. I'm happy for that, but as a librarian I write reviews for other librarians. Not kids. 🙁👇🏻

LibrarianRyan Don't get me wrong I don't mind debating a review but a review is a personal opinion. And my opinion is just as valid as anyone else. And I'm happy to read an authors next book. Sometimes I like the next one better and sometimes not. Sorry for my rant. I'm annoyed. I probably shouldn't have responded to the complaint. (edited) 7y
Leftcoastzen 👍 7y
hermyknee Yes! Your opinion is completely valid and valued among your colleagues and the general public. I know you have a lot of followers on here who hold your opinion in high regard 🙌🏽 You have every right to be frustrated. That‘s an upsetting situation. 7y

ptkpepe98 Um...weren't you a kid once? Um...aren't parents buying the kids books? Do they understand that a good children's book should elevate and excite the kid, or teach the kid via rhyme and repetition. Geez. Just because it is written for a child doesn't mean you overly simplify it. Well, unless you don't want to teach and explore using books. How silly. Keep up the good reviewing. 7y
Sophoclessweetheart Ignore them. If they can‘t handle an honest review then they should get a different job. Xx 7y
LibrarianRyan @ptkpepe98 thanks. I made the same points you did. We see if this lady sends me copies of all the awards her books have won (yes that happened, and she included letters from kids who loved her books). 7y
Weaponxgirl I hate when authors do this, I know this is their livelihood but it doesn't show them in a good light. Sometimes why someone hates a book is the reason I'm going to buy it. I remember a cookery writer getting snooty on Amazon and it made me not want to support them anymore. Wasn't to me but it left a bad taste in my mouth 7y
Laura317 I don‘t like it when authors comment on reviews. I feel like it has a chilling effect. 7y
ReadingRover @LibrarianRyan @Weaponxgirl I totally agree. This makes the author seem petty especially if you have left constructive criticism. A review is your opinion & you‘re allowed to not like something. If they‘ve won so many awards & so many people liked it why are they worried about one review? As mentioned I am often interested in reading a book based on why someone hated it. I follow a mostly honest reviewers who are very blunt. That‘s why I like them 7y
LibrarianRyan @ReadingRover exactly!🤓🤓 7y
readinginthedark I saw that response! It‘s so ridiculous when people criticize another‘s opinion. Also, kids learn more from language that goes beyond what they already know. One of my son‘s favorite books has the word “haberdashery” and he‘s six. Just sayin.‘ 7y

Ok, so #cockygate is getting worse. An author had her works removed from Amazon and didn‘t have a chance to respond to anything, it looks like her series predates that of Hopkins. A retired lawyer, turned author, has submitted something official to the trademark office. Also - and I‘m waiting for confirmation - reviews with the word cocky in them have been removed from Amazon and Goodreads.

Samplergal That is beyond ridiculous. 7y
jpmcwisemorgan @Samplergal Yes! I‘m waiting for more on the review bit, though. It could be unrelated. An author had readers report to her that some of her reviews were gone. I don‘t know if it‘s because of this but she thinks it is. 7y
LibrarianRyan Wow. For Amazon to pull someone else's books that pre date the trademark. This sucks but has been entertaining. 7y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan Yup. A Goodreads librarian pointed out that Hopkins didn‘t start using cocky as the series title until after the other author - it was right about when she filed the trademark paperwork. The other author was using it in a series a month before that claim so it makes her timing suspicious. It‘s a huge train wreck now. 7y

To all the NetGalley reviewers. How do you handle books, where the publishers asked you to not review until the book was published, but you already read it and want to talk about it?

I just read a DIY galley and have to wait until May to review it. 🙈

Missusb I write the review while I still remember it, and just wait till it‘s closer to publication date. Otherwise I practically have to reread it. 7y
Simona Sweet bookish problems ❤️ 7y
tif I would write the review straight away and then just hold on to it 7y
See All 10 Comments
tjwill I just had one of those for the first time. I‘m going to write the review and then wait to post. 7y
julesG @tjwill @tif @Simona @Missusb - Thanks. Will write up the review and hopefully not forget to post it in May. 7y
tif @julesG maybe add a reminder in your phone for the date you're allowed to publish 7y
julesG @tif Good idea. Thanks 7y
melissanorr That seems so counterintuitive! The whole point of Netgalley ARCs is to build excitement for a book before it comes out. But the ideas here to handle it sound good. 7y
laundry_piles Hmmm I've never been asked that but it seems a backwards to me. Unless they're trying to create hype. If you review it now perhaps it won't be fresh and exciting when the book of released? 7y
julesG @melissanorr @laundry_piles I find it strange, too. Especially since it's a DIY book. 7y
