The Cheerleaders
The Cheerleaders | Kara Thomas
From the author of The Darkest Corners and Little Monsters comes an all-new edge-of-your-seat thriller set in upstate New York about an eerie sequence of seemingly unrelated events that leaves five cheerleaders dead. There are no more cheerleaders in the town of Sunnybrook. First there was the car accident--two girls dead after hitting a tree on a rainy night. Not long after, the murders happened. Those two girls were killed by the man next door. The police shot him, so no one will ever know his reasons. Monica's sister was the last cheerleader to die. After her suicide, Sunnybrook High disbanded the cheer squad. No one wanted to be reminded of the girls they'd lost. That was five years ago. Now the faculty and students at Sunnybrook High want to remember the lost cheerleaders. But for Monica, it's not that easy. She just wants to forget. Only, Monica's world is starting to unravel. There are the letters in her stepdad's desk, an unearthed, years-old cell phone, a strange new friend at school. . . . Whatever happened five years ago isn't over. Some people in town know more than they're saying. And somehow, Monica is at the center of it all. There are no more cheerleaders in Sunnybrook, but that doesn't mean anyone else is safe. Praise for Little Monsters: "A disturbing portrait of how bad news and gossip can curdle when mixed together." --Oprah.com "A twisted story of obsession and manipulation." --Chelsea Sedoti, author of The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett Praise for The Darkest Corners: "You'll be up all night tearing through the pages." --Bustle.com "Gripping from start to finish . . . with twists that left me shocked." --Victoria Aveyard, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Red Queen

I actually enjoyed the first three-quarters of this YA-thriller. The central mystery was intriguing and the messy, complex characters felt very realistic in how they dealt with their grief. However, the ending was a real let-down, knocking this down to a so-so.

A bit predictable and the teenage drama was too much at times. I think it could have been cut down a few hundred pages, but it was entertaining enough to hold my interest.

This was a solid thriller. It's predictable if you know the genre well but the main character is unique in a way I'm not used to seeing. At some points she is pretty damn unlikable and it's refreshing that she actually acts like a confused teenager most of the time instead of having adult logic about everything.

Finished my Goodreads goal for the first time ever and I still have 2 months left! I am currently reading 2 books, one in my car while waiting to pick up my kids and one when I'm in the house. If I keep this up I might get at least 6 more books read this year. I wonder what my goal for next year should be? Maybe I'll do some challenges.

All the cheerleaders are dead.

But that was five years ago.

Among the deaths is Monica‘s older sister, and she is determined to find out the full story of what has happened.

Someone in town definitely knows more than they are willing to say, and Monica is on a mission to find out the truth.

I was invested in this story, but I genuinely feel like it could have been shrunken down to a novella. Solid end and fun ride, but overall just a bit long.

brittanythebookdragon I think I‘ve tried to pick this one up at least 5 times and never get past the first chapter or something. Glad to see a somewhat positive review. I might have to try it again soon. 3y

This is a YA book about a girl whose sister committed suicide and she starts looking for answers. Along with this death, there are a few other cheerleaders who died in suspicious ways. There are a bunch of twists and interesting plot points in this one. Kara Thomas is an awesome author and I have liked everything I have ever read by her. This was super interesting, but I really wish I had read it physically because I think I missed a lot.

This was a decent suspense read. I will not deny that I had the hardest time continuing the story because of Monica's character introduction, which depicted her as a troubled teen that kept making mistake and boyfriend dependent. I did love Jennifer's perspective, she was a far more lovable character than Monica.

Just like @MsB_13 I read this in 2 days and finished it last night at camp. I was pulled in from page 1 and really enjoyed reading it. There are a few lose ends left dangling (or I‘m over thinking it) but that does not take away from the conclusion or the reveals.

This was one of those books where I couldn‘t be sure who did it. I felt it was pretty good but although the mystery was intact and thought out pretty well I felt there was a little too much push for the protagonist, Monica to research the cheerleaders‘ deaths when there wasn‘t much to go on for clues. She was looking for an excuse I suppose. So I‘d recommend it as I did listen to it non-stop to see what happened.

It‘s a little later than usual but I finally got my November wrap up video up! I‘m excited to talk with you about the books I finished last month: https://youtu.be/1tCHRTxp5FU

#novemberwrapup #bookreviews #booktalk #wellread #readinglife #booked #bookpile #youtubeforbooks #booktube #happyreading #arcs

EadieB @Butterflyamore Sad to hear you didn‘t like The Other Woman as I have the ARC too however, I have read her Paula Maguire series and found the books very well written. I am interested in reading Darling Rose Gold, The Cheerleaders and Trace of Evil from your reviews. I‘ve read 13 from November but did not read any NF. My favorite reads are Whitethorn Woods by Maeve Binchy, The Third Twin and Night Over Water by Ken Follett - all 5 stars from me. 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica is a psychological thriller that I know you will love! It was hard to put down, suspects galore, edge of your seat surprise ending. So check that one out! Really good! I have to listen to your movie YouTube as I was traveling home from Mexico when I got it the other day. Your tag today has reminded me to do that so I‘ll be back to you after I finish it. 5y
abookishbutterfly @EadieB I have been hearing lots of great things about The Other Mrs. I definitely want to read it! I‘ll probably wait until it comes out, as I‘m a little overwhelmed with ARCs right now and want to be able to read some of my other books, too. I did see one review state that they couldn‘t believe that the same mind that wrote the Paula Maguire series wrote The Other Wife. Maybe I‘ll reconsider my stance on not reading another one of her books. 5y

I have social anxiety. The idea of joining a book group, although appealing, also terrified me. So when one of our favorite bookstores started one, I wrestled with my decision to join. I was ready to back out when my husband informed me that he was joining, too. My husband, who likes poetry and books on etymology, joined the book group for my sake. And here he is reading the latest pick, which is so far outside of his reading tastes. ♥️

I was planning to rate this YA murder mystery a “so-so“ but it grew on me. I went in thinking it was going to be kind-of campy & fun (maybe it was the cover?) but it was actually very somber & emotionally-complex. Also, triggers galore. The prose isn't anything to write home about but the characters & plot are compelling enough. The slowly-revealed relationship between Jen & her secret suitor is so tender, young, & heartbreaking.

*cont'd below

monalyisha 1/2: I have some nitpicky qualms (use of the word “bitch“; distrust of a step-father figure who bears an eerie resemblance to my own (unshakable, upstanding, goodest of all good guys & a police officer, to boot); & the protagonist doesn't get any stellar last lines in the final chapter from her POV. But the biggest issue I had was resolved in an unexpected way. I thought I knew whodunnit but I was wrong! (edited) 5y
monalyisha 2/2: I can recommend this one, as long as you're not looking for poetic or lyrical prose. Nothing about the feelings or the kind of abuse that takes place is simple or easy, & that feels real (& sickening). Despite the tough subject matter, I looked forward to my daily commute so I could find out more about what happened. (edited) 5y
LibrarianRyan I 100% agree with you review. I felt much of the same way. 5y
See All 7 Comments
monalyisha @LibrarianRyan Interestingly, I‘m going through reviews now & I keep reading that people thought the characters were flat. I didn‘t really feel that way. Also, I just attended a really thought-provoking talk about the difficulty of representing depression in a real way when books need driving action. If an MC is suffering from depression, forward motion & dimension aren‘t really on the table. Maybe that was part of what people were feeling. (edited) 5y
LibrarianRyan @monalyisha I think for me it was talking it over with a group of kids. Originally I was meh, but the more I talked it over with teens that age, the more “real” they made it. Made the characters not so flat. The very very very end, I had figured out. The rest was a bit of a surprise. For me the biggest turn off was that it was not what I was expecting. I was expecting “scream” meets teenagers. And I got we were liars instead. 5y
monalyisha @LibrarianRyan Yeah, I definitely think it should‘ve been marketed a little differently. 5y
YergiBear I enjoyed it, but will agree it wasn‘t quite what I had been expecting. I love the cover but I am not sure it quite fits. 5y
