Les Miserables (Illustrated)
Les Miserables (Illustrated) | Victor Hugo
Les Misrables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. In the English-speaking world, the novel is usually referred to by its original French title, which has not been successfully translated from French (attempts ranging from The Miserable, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor and The Victims, to The Dispossessed).Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, focusing on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption. Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. Les Misrables has been popularized through numerous adaptations for the stage, television, and film, including a musical and a film adaptation of that musical. The appearance of the novel was highly anticipated and advertised. Critical reactions were diverse, but most of them were negative. Commercially, the work was a great success globally

Under @thebookhippie 's “slow and steady“ guidance, the 3rd time was the charm for this tome. While reading this book, I have experienced a full spectrum of emotions. I have admired the absolute beauty of Hugo's writing, but I've also rolled my eyes at his verbosity. I've been devastated and inspired. It's truly an opus. #readlesmis

And now I'm so proud of myself, I'm starting #proust2026 tomorrow1 🙃 Watch out 2026, I'm feeling French.

Throwing confetti and tooting a horn to celebrate finishing Les Mis today. I did not stick to chapter a day, I often fell behind and occasionally read ahead, but I finished! Although Hugo would go off on tangents that meandered I loved it all. Thanks to @TheBookHippie for the check ins which helped keep me reading. So happy to finally read the work behind one of my favorite musicals.

Texreader Congrats!!! That‘s an enormous undertaking and I‘m impressed! I bailed at the convent. Maybe someday I‘ll make it through it because I love the musical as well!! 3d

Would love to read @ChrisBohjalian ‘s afterward!

#ReadLesMis

***The only completely unabridged paperback edition*** of Victor Hugo‘s masterpiece—a sweeping tale of love, loss, valor, & passion.
🇫🇷 Afterword by Chris Bohjalian 🇫🇷
Translated by Lee Fahnestock and Norman MacAfee
Introduction by Lee Fahnestock
Penguin Random House Signet Classics

TheBookHippie Far as I know it is. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
TheBookHippie I like signets but the print is too small. I think our edition is not considered paperback … weird as that sounds. 2w
tpixie @TheBookHippie I think you are right. Ours has higher quality paper, bigger font, and extra annotations. (edited) 2w
See All 13 Comments
TheBookHippie @tpixie ours is also published after the signet. 2w
tpixie @TheBookHippie yes as I‘m looking into this more I see that. I just got a new email from penguin advertising this edition. On further review, I saw that it was published earlier. (edited) 2w
dabbe This one is the first one I tried to read and completely bailed. The font was ridiculously small, and the translation (IMHO) was too pedantic. #hailthebail 💚🤍♥️ 2w

By far the longest book I‘ve ever read, followed closely by ‘It‘. This was my 2nd attempt; I‘m happy & proud of myself for sticking with it. #readlesmis @TheBookHippie

First published in 1862, LES MIS is one of the most ambitious and influential novels in world literature that explores poverty, justice, and redemption in post-revolutionary France. The story centers on Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who rebuilds his life through compassion, while being relentlessly pursued by the rigid Inspector Javert. ⬇️

dabbe Through characters like Fantine, Cosette, and Gavroche, Hugo presents a powerful portrait of human suffering and resilience. The novel‘s greatest strength is its emotional depth and moral complexity. Hugo vividly exposes social injustice and the harsh realities of life for the poor, while emphasizing the possibility of personal transformation. However, the book‘s immense length and frequent historical and philosophical digressions can slow ... ⬇️ 3w
dabbe ... the narrative and challenge modern readers. Its dramatic, often sentimental style may also feel heavy at times.

Despite these potential drawbacks for some, LES MISERABLES remains a major work of world literature, valued for its enduring themes and powerful human stories.

I absolutely loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was lucky enough to see the musical on Broadway in the early 80s. From that point on, I always aspired to read it. Tried two times and failed miserably ... until the #readlesmis group and @TheBookHippie. As much as I adored the musical, the book, of course, is better. I snot-nosed cried my way through to the end. 💙🇫🇷♥️

This may be my most controversial post.
I prayed to the book gods with the upmost of respect while making my Travel Les Mis book.
I don‘t want to get behind further, & just can‘t carry the full book on vacation.
This book was waiting in the wild to be used & loved.
With an X-Acto blade I cut the cover, several of the pages, & the appendix in the back. Now Les MIs can return to France, but in the beautiful countryside

Interesting- in the same day I came upon the same French phrase!
“Entre chien et loup “ - literally between dog and wolf- it means evening.
I‘m reading the Languedoc Trilogy in advance to my trip to SE France ?? (Toulouse, Figeac, & Béduer) since the books are based in that area & Carcassonne.
This phrase is in Book 2- Sepulchre
I‘m lucky to travel, but these travels will make me even further behind on #ReadLesMis

tpixie @Lcsmcat amazing! You really are fluent!! What a great library! 4mo

“Monsieur complains?”
“About you!” said the pedestrian.
“The bureau is closed,” said Gavroche. “I‘m receiving no more complaints.”

I think I‘m a chapter behind, but this chapter 1 of book 6 is fabulous !!! ❤️Gavroche

I‘m still terribly behind, but at least I‘m in July and not June.
Love this quote about Monsieur Mabeuf.
“Like everyone else, he had his own - ist ending. … He was neither a royalist, a Bonapartist…..
- he was a book-specialist!

3✨ This is a chunkster of a book that goes over a lot. We have a few main characters throughout as one little girl grows up. Did I follow along the whole time? No. I was interested in the people and how they grew, but there was quite a bit of battles that just didn‘t interest me.

Amiable This is not my favorite classic, either. 5mo

tpixie @TheBookHippie Yes!!! 💙🤍❤️. lol I‘m still in mid June, but hoping I get some reading in today & tomorrow while my youngest daughter & her 5 kids are at school/daycare. I‘m visiting helping them because her husband has had knee surgery (#3 @32yo!!) . Today‘s first day of school. Now I wish I took off next week too because I don‘t see how they‘re going to do it. He still is doing too much. ❤️‍🩹 5mo
TheBookHippie @tpixie oh that is rough. My sister in love is having #2 she‘s only 47 ! Its recovery is awful. 5mo

tpixie @TheBookHippie yes! I suspect especially in young people because they still have so many child and Work obligations. As opposed to a retiree with a total knee…. Retirees are busy, but usually don‘t have a gazillion people living with them needing them. (edited) 5mo

tpixie @lil1inblue @TheBookHippie @dabbe so far Book Seven is confusing me. Or I‘m not getting the reason of this tangent yet. I do know Hugo loves to go on tangents… 4mo
TheBookHippie @tpixie he loves a good long nothing to do with what we‘re reading tangent …that four chapters later you go OHHHHHH. I do know the second time through I‘m catching a ton more. 4mo
dabbe @tpixie Boy you got that right! And if I'm remembering right, Book Seven repeated itself on certain pages (book printing error?), so I kept wandering and getting confused. I finally read some summaries of just that book and MOVED ON. 🧡💜💛 4mo
tpixie @TheBookHippie @dabbe. Yes I looked into the significance of Book 7. Apparently it‘s the sewer of humanity and later on we get to go through the physical sewers… 4mo
TheBookHippie @tpixie it‘s like a game 😵‍💫🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🫣 @dabbe 4mo
tpixie @TheBookHippie 💜💜💜 4mo
lil1inblue @tpixie @thebookhippie @dabbe I personally found this book fascinating. It felt like he was explaining the tone of the time, and setting things up for later events. It's like he took a minute to let us know that this is also brewing. I also found it quite relevant to the US right now. 4mo
TheBookHippie @lil1inblue SO SO RELEVANT!!! 4mo
dabbe @TheBookHippie 🩵🎯🩵 4mo
dabbe @lil1inblue So relevant! And so hilarious that LES MIS is our #cheetosatan's favorite musical. Does he even know what it's about? 😂 4mo
lil1inblue @dabbe What musical did he even watch? 😂 😂 😂 That's almost the definition of cognitive dissonance! 😅 4mo
dabbe @lil1inblue 😂🎯😂 4mo
tpixie @lil1inblue I did enjoy this book once I understood the purpose of what he was trying to tell us. I do enjoy his tangent sometimes it just takes me a little bit to figure out what his message is! 4mo
lil1inblue @tpixie Oddly enough, in today's chapter (Sept 8), he comes back to some themes from this book. 😅 I feel like reading this is a good exercise in patience. 😂 4mo

AnnCrystal Délicieuse 👏🏼🐝👌🏼🥐😋🐝💝.

Note: there was a feminine and masculine translation of the world yummy?? If this yummy isn't about food, blame Google 😂🤔🤗.
5mo
JenlovesJT47 @AnnCrystal the only word I know for yum in French is miam.🤤 Which word are you talking about? 5mo
AnnCrystal @JenlovesJT47 translated yummy in French on Google and it gave me “Délicieuse“ for feminine and “Délicieux“ for masculine 😂...miam is the translation! That's good to know 🤗😉👍🏼. 5mo
JenlovesJT47 @AnnCrystal ??‍♀️??‍♀️??‍♀️ I‘ve been out in the sun all day so don‘t mind me! ??‍? the first one you used is correct when talking about food. La nourriture délicieuse ? = delicious food ? 5mo

Inaugurated
in 1892, paying homage to
Ocean Man — Victor.

Fun fact: “Ocean man" was a self-applied nickname Victor Hugo used to describe the male literary geniuses he admired, comparing their minds to the vastness of the ocean. The sea and natural world were a significant source of inspiration for his writing and artwork, particularly during his exile in the Channel Islands.

My sister is on vacation in Toulouse, France this week & she sent me some pics from Place Victor Hugo, so I thought I‘d share with my hive and those who #readLesMis — & of course, must write a haiku about it. ? If you zoom in on the street sign, it says Marché Victor Hugo (Victor Hugo Market).

Place Victor Hugo —
dreamy locale in the heart
of vibrant Toulouse. ??

Pickpick

It was a struggle at times finishing this. The main story and characters were exceptional and kept me going, but the lengthy philosophical tangents Hugo so often took made me at times almost forget what the story was about. 19 pages on “slang“. 15 pages on the “sewers of Paris“. And so many more. Still, the story makes it a worthwhile read. The ending is worth waiting for.

BookNook Hugo would have done well to listen to his own critique from page 1175: “The philosophers talk stuff and nonsense. I should like to stuff their philosophy down their gullets again.“ (edited) 6mo

tpixie Beautiful photo! As @dabbe and @thebookhippie said, this is a great edition! The info In The back is very helpful. I just wish that they were numbered and marked in the book itself… but the translation is great! As you can tell, I‘m behind reading as well since I‘m just getting to this post!!! 4mo

dabbe @TheBookHippie @JennLovesJT47 YES! This is the copy to beat all copies! I tried reading LES MIS twice before, but my translations were awful. Christine shared this one, and I have never looked back! You. Will. Love! 💙♥️🤍 4mo

JenlovesJT47 @tpixie before my sister bought me this I was reading it on my ereader. Since I got the book I‘ve been reading from the actual book while keeping track in my ebook (Bookly tracks the time I read) and I cannot BELIEVE what a difference the translation makes in this copy! My ereader copy is totally different. I‘m looking forward to going through the stuff in the back ❤️💙🤍 4mo
JenlovesJT47 @dabbe I finally cracked it open for the first time in over a month the other day and I love it! See my previous comment, it‘s night and day different just in the two versions I have. ❤️💙🤍 4mo
