Ok this is my 1st time posting while I #ReadLesMis — please tell me I‘m not the only one feeling this way reading today‘s chapter! 😤 People are so cruel and despicable. Poor Fantine.

TheBookHippie People are unbelievably cruel. I saw it often being a volunteer doula for teens for 28 years. 2w
lil1inblue Fantine broke my heart in the musical - I Dreamed a Dream made my heart ache. Her story in the book is so much more devastating. 💔 2w

1) Baked a Maple Pecan cake yesterday…sometimes you just NEED cake
2) Pippin‘s favorite toy is monkey man which is almost as big as he is
3) I am loving Les Mis chapter a day

It‘s interesting that the French novels, Les Miserables and The Count of Monte Cristo have several elements in common. #ReadLesMis

Texreader Oh I‘d be interested in exploring this thought with you. I loved the Count but couldn‘t get through Les Mis. 3w
TheBookHippie I saw similarities with Anna Karenina as well. Count is not my favorite and the only Dumas I enjoyed was Black Tulip. However, the perceived main themes are similar at times and even with types of people. 3w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads @TheBookHippie Wow! The Count of Monte Cristo and Anna Karenina are my favorite books. The Count moved Anna to No.2. I still have a crush on him. 😆 3w

DrSabrinaMoldenReads My translation is very different. 3w
Cuilin @DrSabrinaMoldenReads I was just sad for Fantine. The way the boys ‘surprise‘ abandoned the girls was appalling. 3w
dabbe And Tholomyes is described as “badly preserved ... wrinkled, toothless ... beginning to show signs of baldness,“ and in which he claims about himself, “Cock-of-the-walk at thirty, coot at forty.“ #wth? 3w
See All 9 Comments
Cuilin @dabbe yes!! Hugo tells us “20 years later he was a fat, provincial attorney, rich and influential”, but “always a man of pleasure” For all his philosophical talk he knew he was going to abandon her!! 3w
dabbe @Cuilin And it looks like the other girls totally got the joke and moved on, but of course the innocent Fantine, who gave herself for the man she truly believed she loved, is the only one to get pregnant. Truly #lesmis. 3w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads @Cuilin It gets a lot worse. That was a light event 3w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads @Cuilin I was truly into my feelings by the end of that section 3w
Cuilin @DrSabrinaMoldenReads You‘re right, I‘m bracing myself. It‘s so different reading it than seeing it in a theater or on screen. For some reason, I thought Fantine would get more of a love story before the abandonment and single motherhood and having to leave Cosette. I‘ll have to steel myself. 3w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads @Cuilin Certainly no love story 🥺 3w

It‘s getting depressing over here with Fantine. I am trying to keep going but I skimmed ahead a bit and saw where this was heading. When I start doing that, it‘s not a good sign. #ReadLesMis

CatLass007 I loved the musical, I saw it twice on Broadway. The movie was meh. There was a mini-series in 1978 with Richard Jordan as Jean Valjean and Anthony Perkins as Javert which I thought was excellent. I tried reading the book and I tried listening to the audiobook but neither one held my attention. You‘ve made it much further than I did. If you want to keep plugging along, that‘s good. If you decide to bail, that‘s good too. Do what‘s best for you. 1mo
merelybookish Lol. When I decided to increase the speed on an audiobook, I know it's downhill from there. 1mo
TiredLibrarian Tried to read this three times; failed three times. I'm just going to enjoy the musical and the movie versions. 1mo

JenlovesJT47 I‘ve only ever made it about 30 minutes into the Hugh Jackman movie. Never tried to read it or see any other adaptations. I‘m enjoying it so far but just caught up at the moment, haven‘t read ahead yet. But Fantine already gives off vibes as being naive so I‘m sure things won‘t be easy for her. 1mo
TheBookHippie @JenlovesJT47 @DrSabrinaMoldenReads that‘s why I only did a chapter a day in 2020 my first time through. I love it but this is what I read- classical literature. Some parts are hard but when it‘s done and you see the whole it‘s so beautiful. That being said- bail if you have to ! I bailed Middlemarch 4 times before I finally accomplished it! (edited) 1mo
dabbe I've tried reading LES MIS three times and bailed all three times; I saw the musical on Broadway and in LA and adored it. I'm now trying again for a 4th time and am doing better this time than the other three. I tried to read BLEAK HOUSE by Dickens twice and bailed; I tried a third time, and now it's my 2nd favorite Dickens' novel of all time. Do what is best for you. The book will still be there if you ever want to try it again ... or not. 🩶🩷🩶 1mo
tpixie @CatLass007 the mini series sounds interesting! I done know about it! 1mo
tpixie I haven‘t gotten that far, but seeing as she is portrayed as an innocent , I‘m anticipating hardship for her. As the others said, if it‘s not for you, it‘s not for you There are other books to be read 🩵💙🩵 1mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I basically only read classical literature @thebookhippy and all. Some of my favorites are “The Count of Monte Cristo”, “In Search of Lost Time” (I read all volumes last year) and “Anna Karina”. But, I loved the characters. I have not given up yet. It‘s kind of interesting but it is so depressing is the problem. @dabbe @tpixie @JenlovesJT47 @TiredLibrarian @merelybookish @CatLass007 (edited) 1mo
CatLass007 Les Miserables can be incredibly depressing. And that‘s without being able to finish the book because I was bored with chapters upon chapters of him going through the sewers of Paris. The Broadway musical is an absolute masterpiece. Maybe I love it so much because I‘m a singer, but I don‘t think so. I don‘t think I‘m spoiling anything when I say bad things happen. But I find the story incredibly inspiring. If I were to talk about (cont)⬇️ (edited) 1mo
CatLass007 the theme, I‘d say it‘s about forgiveness and redemption. When you finish the book, and it sounds as if you are intent on doing that, I would love to hear your thoughts on my thoughts. (edited) 1mo
CatLass007 @tpixie It‘s a timeless story, so even though the miniseries aired in 1978 it ages well. I have heard that the movie with Liam Neeson is not good at all. But that was one person‘s opinion I haven‘t seen it. 1mo
TheBookHippie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads I‘m at home in dark 😅🙃 I never thought of it as depressing only as what is. On the other hand I cannot read sappy happily ever after - it annoys me! I‘ve read all of Hugo, all of Shakespeare most of the Russian and French Lit cannon etc etc etc. I hope it gets easier, it‘s a bit dark for a while here. I loathe the movie musical 😅of this. 1mo
TheBookHippie @dabbe well this isn‘t my precious Shakespeare or Bronte or Whitman ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ it‘s still one of my absolute favorites! Plus if we could read #thebros we can read anything!!! 1mo
CatLass007 @tpixie You found it! Are you watching it or planning to watch it? 1mo
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie I agree that the movie musical is not very good. Hugh Jackman didn‘t have the vocal range required. Russell Crowe…. What‘s her name who won the Oscar? The Fantines I‘ve seen on Broadway, the Fantines on the original London and Broadway cast recordings, they all have powerful voices. They bring tears to my eyes. What‘s her name? Not so much. Her voice was tiny, wimpy. She made me want to close my eyes and ears. Shakespeare ❤️. 1mo
TheBookHippie @CatLass007 Fantine is my favorite in the actual opera London. 1mo
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie Fantine is such a crucial character in this story. Are you reading this now also or have you read it before? 1mo
TheBookHippie @CatLass007 I‘m leading it and yes I‘ve read it before -it‘s one of my favorite reads of all time. Translation is key in my opinion. 1mo
TheBookHippie @CatLass007 chapter a day for 2025 #readlesmis 1mo
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie Wow. You‘re a better person than I am. And I just remembered I haven‘t tried it twice, I‘ve tried it three times. When I say that the theme is about forgiveness and redemption, what do you think about that? 1mo
TheBookHippie @CatLass007 I think it‘s way more in depth than that. The history in the back ground is important. The historical things that happened and how people responded is why France is not in a dictatorship or under a king. The ways of how people loved, showed mercy, or not, the sacrifice and the calling out of people using religion to control people, all it, lots of layers. It‘s so similar to today it‘s eerie. 1mo
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie Okay. I‘ll give it some more thought. Thank you. 1mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads @TheBookHippie @CatLass007 I actually am really interested in the history aspect. That may keep me reading. I actually visited Versailles and actually went down a rabbit hole reading about Marie Antoinette. Plus, The Count of Monte Cristo (which I loved was in this period). I think it‘s about me not liking Fantine. My thing. Don‘t want to do a spoiler. I‘ve found it‘s important to find characters that I like. Will keep y‘all posted. #ReadLesMis 1mo
TheBookHippie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads Éponine is my favorite (shhhhhh ?) . There‘s a ton of history -it‘s can you get through the sewer and Waterloo parts for most people. 1mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads @TheBookHippie I‘ve decided to stick with it after this discussion. Actually the sewer part sounds intriguing 1mo
TheBookHippie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads I find the sewer fascinating -my brother mocks me alll the time, he wants me to give a tour … clearly he‘s my baby brother… 1mo
tpixie @CatLass007 I plan to watch it!! At my sister now and driving back home today . lol 😂 I better stick to an audiobook! 1mo
dabbe @TheBookHippie Now THAT is an #absolutetruth! #oy! 🤩😂🤗 1mo

Pleased we‘ve got to the next part after examining the character of Monseigneur Bienvenu in great detail.

How is everyone else doing?

DrSabrinaMoldenReads I ordered the Julia Rose translation to see if that increases my enjoyment of the book @tpixie #ReadLesMis (edited) 2mo
tpixie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads that one is more modern than the one you have now, so it probably will be easier to read! Good luck! 2mo

TheBookHippie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads Feel free to join us we are reading a chapter a day for the year. Follow the hashtag #ReadLesMis . 2mo
TheBookHippie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads The Nun who had since passed away at age 99 was an art history, theology and fine arts professor. My daughter took all her classes in college. We aren‘t Catholic but we made many friends with the younger nuns . Summer classes were held at the place were the nuns lived. I when reading this had questions about what religious life and priest were like at the time of this book. Most were social justice warriors, as were these ⬇️ 2mo
TheBookHippie Nuns. They went to many protests with us. At any rate I just wanted the history of the bishop, priest ,religious order… during that time, or a synopsis-their lives had been threatened severely under many rulers for the good they did and was seen as socialism and rulers didn‘t want the poor helped or elevated. It was always fascinating to talk with them. 2mo
TheBookHippie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads at any rate this was 6 years after my daughter graduated and they welcomed me back like I was just there. So much history they knew. They told me all about the vicious Protestants and hiding places for priests and all kinds of history I never knew in such detail. I wish I would have asked more. The nuns now live at the college as their numbers are smaller and dwindling of course. Sad. These nuns do so much good. 2mo
tpixie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads yay! I‘m glad you are also reading this! And thanks for the follow up nun question! I‘m curious about this also. 2mo
tpixie @TheBookHippie fascinating! There‘s so much history to learn - we just need to ask. That‘s great you spent time learning from them. 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I‘m going to order the same edition and join in @TheBookHippie and @tpixie 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads What is the title of Chapter 8 in your edition. @TheBookHippie ? 2mo
TheBookHippie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads After Drinking Philosophy 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Is there a special day and time that you discuss the chapter? 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads My edition is way different @TheBookHippie @tpixie I don‘t have a chapter with that title 2mo
TheBookHippie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads No, we are all reading and post using the hashtag as we wish. I check in once a week & at the beginning and end of each month I post a discussion thread and the scheduled if anyone needs it. If I or anyone finds anything interesting we post. Very loose. IF you follow the hashtag you can see some of our previous discussions. #ReadLesMis
-you may stumble upon my five years ago posts I'm not sure. I read it with a group in 2020
2mo
tpixie @DrSabrinaMoldenReads Perfect! I‘m really enjoying it so far. The chapters are short- except for chapter ten- but it was a great chapter!!! I started on Jan 6 & was able to catch up on the 11th- I‘m a slow reader with not much sit-down reading time, but I caught up!! 🆙 (edited) 2mo

The end of Chapter 6 has lovely quotes of Bishop Bienvenue. We could have a charming book of just Bishop Bienvenue- isms!

Clarification:

Part One: Fantine
Book 1: A Good Man
Chapter 6: Under Whose Protection He Placed His House

Penguin Classic Deluxe Edition translated by Christine Donougher

TheBookHippie I‘ve always thought so! 2mo
tpixie @TheBookHippie 📖 😇🩵 2mo
PageShifter I don't know if I have counted chapters wrong: I didn't find these phrases. In my edition aren't chapter numbers 🙄 What was the title of this chapter? (If you don't mind to check)

At this point Jean came and we got to know why he was shunned.
