Maybe you‘re not crazy—maybe you just have a mental health condition, and that‘s okay. Our brains are all in this together, and the only way out is through, unless you have a line on a tesseract, in which case, let‘s talk.

Is there a single definition of what it means to be “crazy”? Is using the word “crazy” offensive to those struggling with mental illness and something to be avoided? What does it mean for people when labels like “crazy” are attached to their everyday experiences?

This was an informative read. It helped to show me the different sides of mental health. Many of the essays were very relatable. I would definitely recommend this to everyone. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

GingerAntics Right? We have to get rid of some of these words we don‘t even understand the etymology of. 4y
wanderinglynn Because men have named all the things. 4y
Milara Why get rid of the word? The word has done nothing wrong; people that have used it in a disparaging fashion are to blame - i guess because men cannot be hysterical or have emotions 🙄. If we would get rid of the words we don't know the etimology of we will soon speak in sign language. 4y

Nute This little fact must be enlightening to many folks. Proper use of a word is the key...aren‘t we all “of the womb” so to speak. 4y
alisiakae In much the way queer has been turned into a word oof empowerment by the LGBTQ+ community, I thing the same needs to happen for hysterical. Take the word back and give it some feminine power. 4y
deirdrebeecher I think this discussion is missing the words usage as a medical term. I would be reluctant to use it for the same reason I am reluctant to use other outdated medical terms which are used pejoratively. 4y
nanuska_153 I think it's positive that the word has evolved from it's original meaning and now both men and women can be hysterical. It used to originally make reference to a woman's illness, hence it's connection to the womb. Actually dildos weren't created for masturbation, but as a cure for women hysteria and were openly advertised. Some silver linings here 😂 4y
Milara Exactly. Language has it's "own" way of changing, progressing as we begin to understand more about some subjects, words change their meaning or they dissapear for lack of use as they become obsolete. No need to ban them. Next thing we'll know we'll be burning books in the city square. 4y

I loved the comics within. Some of the essays were hit or miss, but I really felt understood and seen by the authors in this book. It really helped me come to terms with some of my own issues.

Some of the essays really resonated w/me, and others not so much. A lot of the art made even more of an impression, especially Gemna Correll's. I might recommend it more for older teens or college aged adults, based on the essays. Reading this did help my perspective on certain mental health issues in my life, so I do think there are interesting topics here for most, if not all. And it's always worth having conversations about mental health.

FeministBookClub Kelly is the best. She curates beautiful essay collections! 6y
jmtrivera @FeministBookClub This is the only one I've read. I came across it sort of accidentally, but I'm glad I did. I appreciated it! 6y

This was my book club pick, & this felt like the first time we had a substantial conversation all night. The essays are powerful & raw, but some are also humorous or inspirational. I appreciate the range of topics covered. Even if you don't struggle with mental health, it's likely you know someone that does, or some experiences will resonate. It's intended to get teens talking, but it's just as important to get adults talking, too.

MrBook Wonderful review! 6y

Today's #riotgrams prompt is a current read. This is one of the many books I am reading right now, and I'm so far enjoying it as much as I did the previous book Kelly Jensen edited. I wish this book had been available when I was a teen, but I'm glad I get to read it now.

Zelma So far this has been my favorite book read this year. So good. 6y
elizabethlk @Zelma it is definitely way up there for me too. The format is great and the essays are just what I need right now. 6y

This was absolutely perfect at this point in time for me. A huge thank you again to @Kaylamburson for this awesome gift. Some essays didn‘t totally work for me but others poke to me soul. Overall this was a powerful, life-affirming, emotional read. Those of us with mental illness are not alone and this is just one resource to show that. Perfect for reading a little at a time and savoring the voices here.

Purrsistently I'm on page 163 of this right now, it's so good! It's also featured on kindle today for $1.99! 6y

Short essays from some well known voices about mental health. Some were great and insightful. Others were a little trite or old hat.

It chilly and rainy outside so I am battling the gloom with coffee, the two books I am in the middle of, and my twinkly tree. Super cozy but I may change to flannel pajamas and complete the hygge. 😁

Yaaaaaaaasssssss! @Kaylamburson I am so in love with this gift! I wanted this book so badly and the chocolate? Perfection! That kitchen sink bar literally made me squeal when it read off the ingredients. There was a lot of hooting and hollering when I opened this. Thank you so much!

And a big thanks to @MaleficentBookDragon for organizing a fun swap! 👏👏👏

Kaylamburson Yayyyyyy!!!! I'm so glad it's such a hit!! The sales guy really sold the kitchen sink bar well, so I hope it tastes as good as it looks! Happy Holidays and enjoy!!! 🎁🎄 6y
Zelma @Kaylamburson I will let you know how it tastes when I finally dip into this chocolate; we have a kitchen overflowing with sweets right now. But I may have to open it tonight for hr #Jolabokaflod tradition! 6y

An important book, especially for teens. There are essays and illustrations that cover a wide variety of mental health issues. I don‘t read enough YA to recognize most of the authors, but I applaud everyone who contributed their voice to this collection.

This is an important book in that it provides very personal perspectives on mental health, and I can easily see readers making connections with one or another of those perspectives.

I‘m having a cup of tea and a cookie for an evening snack with this book, but I think after a few more pages I‘ll be getting some sleep.

#Readathon #NetGalley

Daisey Book 2 finished for readathon this morning. An interesting anthology that emphasizes openness about and acceptance of mental illness in order to encourage and help each person find what best works for them. 6y

I‘m buying this book for my #classroomlibrary, and I‘m wondering if anyone has more suggestions of books appropriate for middle schoolers about #mentalhealth. I have several students suffering from depression, some who have attempted or contemplated suicide. I really don‘t know how to help them, but I thought books might be a good way. Some of the students have very low reading levels, so easy reader suggestions are welcomed as well.

DivineDiana I don‘t have any suggestions, but thank you for caring! ❤️ 6y
tjwill @DivineDiana Thanks. Caring for them is the easy part! They are sweet kids who are dealing with a lot. I spend a lot of time worrying about my students. 😢 6y

DivineDiana “There is a great difference between worry and concern. A worried person sees a problem, and a concerned person solves a problem.” You are concerned and working to solve the problem. 👏🏻👏🏻❤️ 6y
tjwill @DivineDiana Thank you for that. 💕 6y
tjwill @4thhouseontheleft Thanks for the recommendations! I‘m purchasing them now. 6y
Bibliogeekery Not sure what age your students are but I use this with teenage clients. It's edgy but good 6y
tjwill @Bibliogeekery They are 13-14. This looks good! Thanks. 6y
