Just started a new audiobook ~ meh at the moment but I‘m willing to give it some more time. It‘s on my Kindle as well, I bought it when my friend told me she enjoyed this book. Her daughter at Brandeis University had the author as a professor & said he was really funny.

This is my review for a book I read. I tried to read this one. I‘m getting rid of it.

#unhaul #dnf

LinesUponAPage I felt that way about the last book Reese Witherspoon‘s book club pick was- Such A Fun Age. I couldn‘t figure out why everyone loved it so much. The characters were annoying and not very deep. I was honest about how i felt about it. The Synopsis was intriguing the book wasn‘t. 5y

Just closed the last page but wishing there were a few more. An enjoyable read- laugh-out-loud lines plus characters who get more complex as the story unfolds. At first I wasn‘t sure McCauley could write women, and I‘m still not a total fan of the generalized mother-whore tendencies, but the protagonist is interesting and the plot makes for a good summer book. Language that‘s a bit too quippy at the start makes way for insights later.

Julie loves her seaside house, but on a teacher‘s salary, she is frantically looking for a way to keep it, now that her second husband is divorcing her. Her first husband, David, has his own problems on the West Coast, but Julie‘s daughter, Mandy, invites him to visit and help with her college applications (that‘s his business). Modern families are complicated. Endearing characters that you will want to find their happily ever afters.

Saved by the book! I had been listening to this in my car on CDs! No blue tooth in my vehicle! And now no CD player as well! My car is back from repair and running once again, but not the CD player! 😕 So, stopped by the Library and luckily a copy of the book was on the shelves!

I really liked this book at the beginning- strong characters, compelling storyline, witty dialogue. But the witty dialogue became tiring because EVERYONE was caustic and mean. It was funny until it was tiring. Major characters and minor characters were sharp and rude. That feels like being stuck at a dinner party where everybody wants to have the last word and prove how funny they are, but actually comes off as a jerk. I ain‘t got time for that!

I found this book easy to read but unremarkable. The characters were accessible but I didn‘t really care about them until half-way through. The plot meandered and then fizzled. In the end, I was overcome by apathy and found it hard to finish. That said, I liked the author‘s wisdom and insights about middle age.

This book was an absolute pleasure to read. From the very start, it just felt like the reader was in very good hands. The story reminded me in some ways of 19th century Brit lit faves like Austen, where the plot revolves around finances, beloved real estate, and relationships, yet it is also completely modern, including a subplot on the unique perils of being a teenager in the internet age. Many thanks to the publisher for sending me this ARC!

My neighborhood book club wanted something light and fun for a summer read, and this may have fit the bill if the characters weren't so insufferable. They all make these judgmental, often cruel, observations and asides about everyone else. This happens over and over, from all three of the main characters. I do realize these are meant as jokes, but aren't jokes supposed to be funny?

batsy A good part of my adult life has been about coming to terms with how often "funny" is confused with mean-spirited or cruel ? I'm always wary of the "light and funny" books because of this 6y
mklong @batsy For sure. There was an interview with the author at the end of the book and it was discouraging to hear that his favorite thing to write are the snarky asides that I found so off-putting 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y

An enjoyable read about a woman who gets together with her ex-husband to get help with college plans for her daughter (from her 2nd marriage). I would have liked it better if the characters were more deeply developed. I also found that the author made a lot of judgmental remarks via characters‘ feelings and thoughts but they felt more like his own beliefs being injected into the book.

I had such high hopes for this book but about 2/3 of the way though, I just had to bail. I stopped caring about what happened to the characters and didn‘t want to force myself to finish it just to finish it. So, another book I couldn‘t finish. 😔

I can't quite put my finger on why I didn't love this. It's possible that my state of mind this past week is partly to blame, but I don't think that's completely it. This book is written well and the characters are interesting, but I think I would have liked it more had there been a bit more plot to go along with the character development 🤔

#myexlife This book is about David and Julie. They had divorced and hadn't seen each other in 2o years but were brought back together by Julie's daughter, and circumstances of life. It's a well written story, it started to drag a little in the middle, but was brought together nicely in the end. I loved the main characters and can feel for them and how life doesn't always work out how you plan. Not quite a 5 stars, but I'll give it a solid 4.

As much as I loathe reading these words as the beginning of anyone‘s review, I am going to say them: I loved this book! From the very first page to the last, I read avidly, soaking up every word, eager to continue. I fell in love with each and every character, enthralled by their quirkiness, and captivated by their actions. The dry humor and witty prose were perfect, and made this such a delectable read. Highly recommended!

I wanted to like this book so much, but I just couldn't. I didn't connect with the characters David and Julia. I wasn't really in the mood to read it but I got a late approval from Netgalley and had to have it read by Tuesday. I found this story to be quirky and cute, yet thoughtful at the same time. I enjoyed the development of the story and characters, even the annoying neighbor Amira. Stephen McCauley is an excellent storyteller and this is my first novel by him. I highly recommend this book for those vacation reads seeing as summer is upon us. This story may or may not make you go out to buy toss pillows(read the book to see what I am referring too, lol).

Thanks to @HotCocoaReads (on insta) and @flatironbooks this #giveaway #ARC arrived!

David‘s life is falling apart.. “The last person he expects to hear from is Julie. It‘s been decades since they‘ve spoken, and he‘s relieved to hear she‘s recovered from her brief, misguided 1st marriage to him.. In prose filled with hilarious and heartbreakingly accurate one-liners, McCauley has written a novel that examines how we define home, family, and love.”
