Arrived today. Maybe next week‘s snow will give me some time to really dig into it.

It was fitting for Robert Elms‘ new book to arrive today: Yesterday I found my copy of the 150th issue of The Face in a container in my basement while searching for something else.
Dear Oxford American — We‘re both Southerners here. I sure as hell ain‘t reading outside again until this humidity bids us farewell in four months.
First of Cline‘s I‘ve read. I really enjoy her writing. Somehow reminds me of Hemingway, with so much found in what is actually withheld from description.
Enjoyed this one even more than I expected.
Martin shared some great personal memories, from growing up in council housing to eventually playing in front of six-figure crowds in Italy with Spandau Ballet and moving on to acting.
Loved reading his personal life lessons along with details about ‘80s culture.

A conversation between Margaret Renkl and Silas House about his latest book, “Lark Ascending,” at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville.
House really struck a chord with me in talking about loving the place you call home even when it doesn‘t love you back.
This one is 654 pages. See y‘all in a few months!

Watching The Gilded Age while reading The Nineties. 🤷🏻♂️

I‘m finally digging into a Kevin Wilson book (and ashamed it‘s taken me this many years).
If you aren‘t familiar with McCarthy or didn‘t grow up in the ‘80s, I‘m not sure this memoir would hold your interest. But I really enjoyed it. It was interesting to find out he was just as insecure and clueless about where he was going or what he was doing as any of the rest of us.

I‘m already loving this one, only 20 pages in, and hoping to make a real dent in it during today‘s snow and playoff games.

I learned about so many LGBT artists I‘d never heard of. I think I‘ll buy my own copy to keep for reference.

I‘ve read only the first two interviews but am already loving it.

“Well, it‘s nice to know that illusion is not a human invention.”
I‘m really looking forward to her book about Act Up next month.
Super Bowl Sunday. Dog hair, dog toys, pregame, Bryan Washington and Miles Harvey after Weekend Edition Sunday and CBS Sunday Morning.
If you‘re a Gen-Xer who loved British music in the ‘80s, then you‘ll love this book. If you love music & history, you‘ll love this book for connecting the dots among David Bowie, Roxy Music, disco, punk, the availability of synths & all music that followed. It‘s amazing that fewer than about 50 people transformed so much in music, fashion, publishing and design for the future — all from a drive to carve a better life for themselves.

I want to see more from the Kevins of this world. Sometimes, 20 or 30 years later, we get an apology out of them when they‘re challenged on their past behavior. But I want more. I want to see them put actions to their apologies — getting involved in anti-bullying or providing some type of support to marginalized kids.
This one arrived yesterday from Asheville‘s Malaprop‘s.
He would be turning 75 in October. This one won the National Book Award for nonfiction. Enjoying it so far.
I can‘t imagine enjoying this book if you aren‘t enthusiastic about “Angels in America.” If you are, however, this is a meaty account of how it came to be and of every iteration of it of the last 25+ years.
Interviews include everybody from Nathan Lane and Andrew Garfield to Jeffrey Wright, Meryl Streep, Debra Messing and everyone else who‘s had a hand in it.
Yes, I‘m reading all of these at once. 🤦🏻♂️
I think this one belongs to the Millennials. The parties, the drinking and the dating dramas simply weren‘t interesting to me. But I‘m glad he figured himself out.
This one arrived today, but it will be a few weeks before I can tackle it.
I‘m reading far too many books right now — this epic, along with four others borrowed on my Kindle from the Nashville Public Library (“Between the World and Me,” “Educated,” “Leading Men” and “Plays Well with Others”).
“It‘s always a matter, isn‘t it, of waiting for the world to come unraveled? When things hold together, it‘s always only temporary.”
As soon as I finished this book, I told my partner, “This guy will get hammered by Gen Zers and Millennials for not being sufficiently woke to their liking.” And it appears I‘m right, from what I‘ve seen so far. But I appreciated his perspective and his desire to pass on advice from his experiences. No father is perfect, but Jackson certainly has worked so hard to try to be the best parent he can. Really enjoyed it, mainly because it felt like such a reflection of current times.
Didn't want it to end. I look forward to the movie that certainly will be in the works. (And proud to say I bought it at Provincetown's East End Books.) #getindie
Looking forward to digging into this one. Just picked it up from Malaprop's in Asheville.
Favorite lines.
All right, I'm finally making my longtime secret public. If you're ever in Scottsboro, Ala., you're going to strike gold with used books. For years I've been buying at Unclaimed Baggage. Each of these was $1.99 today.
Great reading & signing tonight by Richard Russo at the Margaret Mitchell House. I enjoyed hearing his perspective on the film adaptions of his work, how he starts his novels, etc.

On my first visit to D.C.'s renowned independent bookstore, I was exploring Orwell, travel memoirs I'd never seen, philosophy books -- yet I walked out with Dave's book.
Great timing too, on the heels of me reading "Hillbilly Elegy." Oddly enough, the two give a great account of so much of my own experience.

Though I'm trying to finish two other books, I'm not going to be able to resist starting this one after picking up my order from Malaprop's this afternoon.

Time to get started! Picked it up this morning from Malaprop's in Asheville after pre-ordering six weeks ago.

This book is going to be a tough read. I hope men like Spencer Cox aren't completely forgotten.
Just discovered the @bookriot February challenge. Today's entry: favorite villain. Serena immediately came to mind. (And I still love this original cover.)

What a trip down memory lane. While growing up in rural Alabama, I was obsessed with UK youth culture. (Baffling, I know.) And The Face, which I purchased every couple of months from Waldenbooks in Atlanta's Perimeter Mall, was my personal guide.

I liked it but didn't love it. I think my expectations were too high because of the accolades.

When I was about 150 pages from the end, I said, "I'm so eager to find out what happens next, but I'm beginning to dread telling these characters goodbye." To me, that's such a satisfying feeling while reading a book.
