Still learning a lot from reading an essay a day from my selection for February‘s #AuthorAMonth. Today‘s essay is about trigger warnings, and whether or not they are effective in preventing people from being triggered. As a survivor, she is not affected by possible triggers, because the triggers are nothing compared to the actual trauma. As a writer, she does not believe in including trigger warnings. An interesting perspective.

AnnCrystal I like warnings, I feel it's politeness to any reader who may be extra sensitive 📚💝. 2d
CatLass007 @AnnCrystal Fair enough. I was once told that the vast majority of women were survivors of childhood sexual abuse and physical abuse and were subject to sexual harassment and sexual assault as adults. That makes me a member of a minority. I was subject to mental and emotional abuse by nuns when I was a child, but that‘s something different. I‘ve never seen trigger warnings about nuns. And I would actually appreciate something like that. 2d
Butterfinger As a survivor of physical and emotional abuse, I get reminded of my control being taken and become full of rage. As an adult, almost 50, I try very hard to retain pleasant ties with my parents. But, if they call while I am dealing with past issues from a trigger from school, tv, or books, I can't talk to them. I know I will lose my cool. I would appreciate warnings, too @AnnCrystal @CatLass007 2d

CatLass007 @AnnCrystal @Butterfinger I understand why you would want, need, and appreciate trigger warnings. What I find most intriguing about Roxane Gay‘s perspective is that she survived her trauma and she knows she would survive triggers. If I had experienced any other kind of abuse, I very well might want trigger warnings also. 1d
AnnCrystal @Butterfinger & CarLass007🫂👍🏼💝.

I believe each person has a different level of tolerance to emotional reactions that can be triggered by personal experiences. That's why I like warnings, in case a book/movie is needed as a safe escape.

I wish the %s about women and girls were different in these modern times. I've read that 84.3% of American Indigenous & Alaska Native women have experienced violence in their lifetime.

Survival is a journey.

Kitta I love Roxane Gay but I disagree with her stance here. I appreciate trigger warnings so I know if it‘s going to bring something up for me. Maybe she‘s further on her healing journey than I am, but having been sexually assaulted multiple times I need to know before reading something if it contains something like that. I agree it‘s nothing compared to the actual trauma but being blindsided sets me off for days sometimes and I get so dissociated. 1d

"Somewhere along the line we started misinterpreting the First Amendment and this idea of the freedom of speech the amendment grants us. We are free to speak as we choose without fear of prosecution or persecution, but we are not free to speak as we choose without consequence."

Lots of gems in this one! I didn't agree with everything she wrote but it gave me a lot to think about, much of which is still unfortunately relevant in today's society

peanutnine Finished last month for #AuthorAMonth and it was my #doublespin pick as well @Soubhiville @TheAromaofBooks 3d

Great story of D&Ds history and hownit has evolved over the years to become one of the most widely played tabletop games. Woth a good bit of lived experience from the author sprinkled throughout.

I liked this a lot more than Difficult Women, which I read a few years ago. I especially enjoyed her literary criticism essays. It was interesting to read this more than a decade after it was written, and it was a little heartbreaking to read her cautious optimism about the direction we were heading, knowing how far we've actually regressed since then. This my February #AuthorAMonth pick. @Soubhiville

#Read2025

I finally read this one thanks to #AuthorAMonth It‘s been in my TBR for ages & it‘s my 2nd Roxane Gay (I read Hunger in 2017). I had hoped to finish Not That Bad too but I ran out of time. Although some of the cultural references are dated (it was written 12 years ago), the fact that so little has changed is pretty telling & sobering. Some essays were better (or at least I connected with them more) than others but overall, a good read.

This was my first Roxanne Gay read and I quite enjoyed it. Her opinions were relatable and, even if I didn‘t agree, she broke them down in such a way that I could still appreciate her viewpoint.

This book made me laugh out loud a couple of times, but more importantly, it made me think. A lot. Roxane Gay‘s down-to-Earth writing style is so approachable. Even when I didn‘t agree with her opinions, she helped me focus on what my own opinions are. In the end, I realized that, like her, I am a Bad Feminist. But that‘s better than not being a feminist at all.
