In the city of Shadow, beneath the World Tree, alleyways shimmer with magic and godlings live hidden among mortalkind. Oree Shoth, a blind artist, takes in a strange homeless man on an impulse. This act of kindness engulfs Oree in a nightmarish conspiracy. Someone, somehow, is murdering godlings, leaving their desecrated bodies all over the city. And Oree's guest is at the heart of it. . . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When I finished book one in this series, I didn‘t know where Jemisin was going to take the series, and I absolutely could not have imagined how the story would continue!
Somehow seeming both very different and perfectly integrated into the world she built, book 2 was even better than the first. I cannot wait to see what she does in the final!

I loved that this book picked up not long after the last, dealing with some of the changes and mayhem left after the huge shifts at the end of the last book. I also loved that it dealt with the realities of the common folk after the rarified lives of the elite in the last book. It was a great story/great characters, but I found myself wishing it had been set further in their future, I loved the dynamic, but it was just too soon for redemption.

The second book in The Inheritance Trilogy and I enjoyed it more than the first. The world Jemisin created here and the mythology is nothing short of amazing.

I realize her writing isn't for everyone, but I love it. 💚

Found time to finish this #audiobook during a busy week of intensive classes! I enjoyed this more than Book 1; we get more of Jemisin's lush world-building outside the palace, in the city below. I also grew more attached to this main character than Book 1's. She's blind but can see magic, but this disability trope isn't so egregious because of Jemisin's brilliant writing. A little darker of a vibe than Book 1. #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

Long and lovely #audiowalk at sunset today. Thankful that my body could handle it. 🙏 Nothing like breathing fresh air (so few people I could skip the mask! but of course had one around my neck just in case), walking on the beach, watching a beautiful sunset, and listening to a good book. 😍 This one's sucked me in just as much as the first! #AuthorAMonth

Morning #audiowalk on the beach with #Pippin! 🐾 Can you spot the three deer in the bottom right picture? 👀 Pippin couldn't! 😂 Due to various health reasons, I haven't been able to be very active this month, and it's especially disappointing while at the beach with my family. After this short walk, I've been laid up with pain. At least this audiobook can continue to whisk me away while walking and while resting! #AuthorAMonth

This fantasy sequel‘s protagonist is blind, but (twist!) she can see magic. That‘s about the oldest disability trope in the book. Despite that, it‘s clear our author did not take writing this character lightly.

I‘ve been surprised that both books are prominently supernatural romances, downplayed in the marketing. I found this male lead less believably entrancing and this plot more a series of accidents, but Jemisin can create such a vivid world!

Yay! This one was really good, too! I really loved the main character. It was nice to see some characters from the first book appear again, too.

I have my doubts about book number three because I did not like the character it follows at all when he appeared in the first two. But Jemisin is such a good writer, I think I'm just gonna have to go with it...

I made some apple blondies while I finished rereading THE BROKEN KINGDOMS. This series is so good, y‘all. I‘m sorry I won‘t be able to squeeze in THE KINGDOM OF GODS for a couple weeks yet.

The “blondies” taste great but are too dry to deserve the name, even though I underbaked them as per the blondie/brownie playbook. I‘ll tell people they‘re apple sheet cake instead. #audiobaking

Now THAT, my fellow Littens, is how it is done! I savored this book. I can‘t wait to get my hands on book 3. The MC is blind, but all the other senses are so well described you forget.
“He hissed at me. It was not a human sound. In it I heard snakes and ice, dust settling into a deep, shadowed crevice.”
The imagery is astounding. The blurb on the front from Naomi Novak sums it up so well “Lush and evocative.” Loved it. ALL the stars!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is my second Jemison trilogy. I have to say that in neither trilogy did the middle book seem “transitional” or “like filler” or superfluous. Instead, each stands alone as a great book. Very cool 😊

I had quite a mixed experience with this book, a lot of which was because it had been so long since I finished the first novel in the trilogy. I had forgotten a lot of characters and world-building. But I did find the new protagonist fascinating, as I do Jemisin's gods. Strangely I felt like this really captured me only in the last 50 pages. My main complaint is that for most of the book Oree has things happen to her, rather than her doing things.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian One more thing: I would be very interested to hear the thoughts of someone with a vision disability on the depiction of Oree's blindness. 6y

Another great book by N.K. Jemisin! I read this one aloud to my partner. Jemisin is so skillful at world building. It's hard to even know what to say about this book - godlings, a magical tree, demons, humans and gods trapped in a human body. Hijinks ensue! Can't wait to start the third in this series!
