To Kill a Kingdom
To Kill a Kingdom | Alexandra Christo
Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most--a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elians heart to the Sea Queen and or remain a human forever. The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby--its his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, shes more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good--But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankinds greatest enemy?

I'm a sucker for a fairy-tale retelling, especially when they get dark and gritty. My big complaint about this one is that the big battle at the end was too disjointed which made the action kind of difficult to follow.

Lira, a siren, is known as the Princes‘ Bane bc of how many she‘s killed. Prince Elian is known as the Siren Slayer for how many he‘s killed. Lira is punished & turned into a human. Elian & his pirate crew find her. All she has to do is bring back his heart to her mother. But Elian plans to find a hidden gem to destroy the Sea Queen. Decisions decisions for Lira. Banter wasn‘t that good, not enough bad ass siren action for me, this book is… fine?

I loved it. I didn't want to put it down. The plot was amazingly well written. The aesthetic quotes and descriptions were to die for. The depth and growth of the characters was stunning. The flirtatious banter and joking was flawless. The only thing slightly “disappointing“ was the ending, but then again, I rarely find an ending that suits my taste. For not being huge on fantasy books, I loved it and will definitely read again.

If you love the Little Mermaid, then you'll love this book. A familiar story with a twist. Christo's characters are lovable. She did a fantastic job constructing her world and explaining the history through the story and her characters.

I was initially drawn into this book by the writing style. It was so descriptive and insightful. The setting was beautiful.

I was also so invested in the relationship between Lira and Elian. Their banter gave me life. Which is probably why I also loved the side characters so much.

. I thought the ending–betrayal to forgiveness and that sort of thing–happened way too quickly. I‘d think the characters would need more time to process everything.

I have to say I enjoyed this one and loved the characters, although the word-building was severely lacking and left me wanting to know way more. Anything from, what's the underwater kingdom like? To, where did Elian's magic knife come from? If you like The Little Mermaid and the joy of general YA fantasy shenanigans then this book is a fun, quick read that you just... might as well?

This book is probably my cup of tea. I wouldn't put it down and finished it in 2 days. Though I read more fantasy, Greek mythology, and magic it surprised me how much I loved this book! If your one of those people who like ocean/pirates/sirens this book is definitely for you!

This was an exciting read. It was an interesting take on the story of The Little Mermaid. It had so much excitement and romance. It wasn‘t the typical romance like in other books it was much exciting. I would definitely recommend this book. 🧜‍♀️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There was so much I should have liked about this book! A murderous princess and a pirate prince, many badass women, a truly twisted fairy tale… but I struggled to connect with it. There were a couple of timeline issues that kept me baffled, the world was weird (a hundred kingdoms each with their own theme, really?), and the writing/word choice just felt off to me.

To Kill a Kingdom is one of the many, many pirate themed books that has me constantly searching for similar titles. The concept and storyline had me hooked from the beginning, but there were times when the plot slowed down. I‘ve seen a few reviews stating that this book is too juvenile, but it‘s YA, so.. what do you expect? I‘ve also heard that the ending was disappointing but in my opinion, it was perfect. I love happy endings.

I had high expectations when I read the blurb of this book, and unfortunately I can't say that they were met. There was almost no tension between the main characters, and their first romantic interaction was completely out of the blue. The book is very predictable, and it was difficult for me to finish it.

Pirates, Princesses, Kingdoms and Sea Queens. I could be wrong but this almost felt like a adult retelling of “The Little Mermaid” mixed with the enemies to lovers trope. However, there was just not enough loving for my liking. This had been sold to me by #boktok and I was hoping for that little spice but it was just a little lacking. The ending felt a little rushed but I enjoyed the book overall. A solid 3/5.

I kinda liked this book. Firstly, I am so happy this is a standalone. Secondly, I didn't find either of the characters annoying, nor did I mind the ending for one. I guess it was a bit predictable, and the main guy didn't partake in a lot of plot action vs action scene, but that was alright. Pleasantly surprised that this was not a shitty pirate book.

The next book in my #bookclub is To Kill A Kingdom. We enjoyed the last retelling so much that we decided to continue the theme onto this week. To Kill A Kingdom is a Little Mermaid retelling. I haven‘t gotten very far into it yet and already three people have been murdered, so it‘s sure to be an interesting ride!

I hope after the reading disaster that was The Dead Queens Club, that I will enjoy getting back to my favorite genres: Fairytale retellings and fantasy. I know I am a snob, but lately stepping out of my comfort zone has yielded not that many great stories. I want to connect with characters and fall into other worlds! I am so excited for this book!

Some people relate this book to the Little Mermaid. So I went into reading this book with that notion in mind. That was not the feeling I got. What I got was so much better. Elian and Lira are two gorgeously flawed character who are pushing against what they feel is a preordained life. When their worlds collide its blood, angst, fireworks and mistrust. This book was a beautiful adventure I would happily take again and again.
