I'm actually from the San Francisco Bay Area and for many years I lived in Yuba City which is part of the Twin Cities made up of Marysville/Yuba City where 3 believed victims of the Zodiac were killed. Whilst there is a lot of really good info I can't help but feel the author let his personal opinions and conclusions color his writing. Regardless this was a terrifying individual and his crimes were horrifying.

I thought I‘d zip right through this one, but frankly it was a bit of a slog. Graysmith presents detail in a way that‘s not terribly compelling, and he‘s so interested in forcing conclusions without supplying any evidence that I started rolling my eyes. I do wonder if these murders will ever be solved and I kinda think they won‘t.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It‘s fascinating how 1960s California was such a hotbed for serial murder and cult activity. By fascinating, I mean terrifying. As a Zodiac noob, I knew very little about this case other than the murders remain unsolved. Graysmith provides details, letters, decodings, patterns, and suspects. A solid true crime account. In recent years, DNA testing has been attempted, though unreported. I hope this gets solved Golden State Killer style.

Cinfhen I remember as a young child the summer of the Son of Sam whom people thought could possibly be the Zodiac Killer. It was definitely a scary time!!! Between hijackers and serial killers the late 60‘s early 70‘s were some pretty effed up times!! And yet kids had all the freedoms in the world- not sure what to make of that 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I‘m not sure what to make of that either! 2y

Bit of a theme going on here. Been having trouble sleeping at night so I‘ve been watching lots of documentaries and now reading lots of nonfiction true crime. Any recommendations for books or documentaries to watch?

monkeygirlsmama You're like me! Read the creepy sh!t when you can't sleep at night. Seems counterproductive, but whatever!!! I have the first two books, but don't think I read Rule's though I may have once long ago. In middle school and high school I tore up the true crime section of the library and bookstores. haha

Have you watched the Olympic Park bomber one, MindHunter? I think it's on Netflix, that or Hulu. My bf binged it and then binged it a 2nd time w/me.
4y
monkeygirlsmama Also the Night Stalker documentary series, also on Netflix or Hulu, was really good. 4y
See All 16 Comments
emilyhaldi Not a documentary, but I have been completely addicted to Forensic Files on HLN lately... can‘t stop watching!!! 4y
Lcsmcat And this helps you sleep? That would keep me up! 4y
CloakNQuill @monkeygirlsmama Agreed! Mindhunter & Nightstalker were both phenomenally done. The Ripper was decent. Manhunt the Unabomber is the one about the Olympic park bomber. Less documentary more reenactment but nonetheless done very well. All are on Netflix. 4y
CloakNQuill If your interested in religious cults, Waco was pretty good as well. 4y
Sleepswithbooks Have you read “The Night Stalker” about Richard Ramirez? That one actually made me recheck my locks and windows multiple times before bed years ago. 4y
LeahBergen @emilyhaldi 😂😂 I go on binges of that show and can‘t stop! 4y
TheBookStacker @Wastedmindsx I am 💯 into cults can‘t get enough! 4y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi That‘s what Milly does all the time too! So it probably IS your kind of book! 4y
emilyhaldi @LeahBergen I knew it couldn‘t just be me 😂 that show is perfect binge material. 4y
emilyhaldi Oh my gosh how funny!!! 🤣🤣🤣 @BarbaraBB i‘m definitely reading it then 4y
Tanisha_A Have you seen Unbelievable? It's on Netflix! 4y
monkeygirlsmama @Wastedmindsx I second that. It was really good. 4y

This was probably the most difficult book to decide on if I loved it, or if it was okay. Dont get me wrong, i thought it was a good book, I was interested in all the facts and information it had to offer. But to me something just didn't feel right with the way it was written. This was the first book that has ever put me to sleep everytime I opened it up.

It was meh. You can read my full review on goodreads. It isn‘t often that I actually wrote a review on there, but I felt like I needed to for this one. If someone else had written it, it probably would have been better. It doesn‘t help that Zodiac was never caught, but I still didn‘t entirely like this one.

I‘m trying. But I‘m bored. I think I like it better when we know who the serial killer is. I don‘t like reading a chapter where the family and friends of the victim are talking about how she was always going out with other men and leaving her husband and baby at home. I am not liking his writing style. May DNF.

This was a great book to listen to on audio. I never knew how many unsolved murders there were that the police believed were committed by the zodiac. It was interesting to hear the patterns that graysmith pointed out in regards to when these murders occurred. This was a great true crime novel I highly recommend. Now I want to go watch the movie again

Truly chilling, bizarre and mysterious. This was a great novel depicting the shock and horror the Bay area went through from 1968-1981 as they were terrorized by an evasive and deadly sexual sadist.

The first 100 pages or so were very compelling, then it settles into a narrative about other possible Zodiac victims and suspects. A bit dry at times, but well worth the read if you're interested in true crime stories. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ P.S. Please go watch the movie if you haven't done so already! #truecrime

MinDea The movie is so good. I saw they are making a new one. Have you read In Cold Blood, Devil in the White City or American Fire? 7y
JenlovesJT47 @MinDea I own In Cold Blood. I started it a few years ago but didn't finish it cause it had to go back to the library, but I found a copy at a used bookstore and definitely plan on reading it, I'm a big fan of Truman. The movie In Cold Blood is also amazing! I got the audiobook for Devil in the White City but haven't listened to it yet. Haven't heard of the other one. Have you read Helter Skelter? IMO the best true crime novel out there. 7y
MinDea I just ordered In Cold Blood and want to read it soon. Devil in the White City is seriously very good. One of my favorite true crime books (I think this might lean into Historical Fiction since he has to fill in some gaps). I have Helter Skelter but haven't read it yet. I have always like true crime but don't pick it up often. American Fire was my botm pick this month. 7y
See All 11 Comments
MinDea This isn't true crime but have you read Swans of Fifth Avenue? This is how I learned about In cold Blood and Capote. Melanie Benjamin is one of my favorite authors. 7y
JenlovesJT47 @MinDea thanks I'll have to check out American Fire. I might be biased about Helter Skelter because I'm a huge Sharon Tate fan, so I have a special interest in the case. But I think Vince Bugliosi was a genius! 7y
JenlovesJT47 @MinDea yes I absolutely loooooove Swans of Fifth Avenue! One of the reasons I'm fascinated with Truman. It inspired me to learn more about him and his "swans" and I've read several books about them. 7y
MinDea Have you read her other books? Alice I have Been is what got me into Historical Fiction and The Aviator's Wife. So good! I read they are turning Swans into a movie or tv show! 7y
JenlovesJT47 @MinDea a TV show?! 😱That would be awesome! 7y
JenlovesJT47 @MinDea I haven't read her other books yet, besides the short story she wrote about Slim Hawks, but they're on my TBR list! 7y

Just finished my second audio book this morning! This book scared me. I knew about the Zodiac killer but didn't really know many of the details before this. They had some good suspects but he was never caught. The fact that there were a variety of different suspects who matched not only the physical but also the mannerisms is frightening. I really enjoyed this book even if it did give me a few nightmares.
