From the bestselling author of Here on Earth, a miraculous, enthralling tale of a woman who is struck by lightning, and finds her frozen heart is suddenly burning.Be careful what you wish for. A woman who was touched by tragedy as a child now lives a quiet life, keeping other people at a cool distance. She even believes she wants it that way. Then one day she utters an idle wish and, while standing in her house, is struck by lightning. But instead of ending her life, this cataclysmic event sparks a strange and powerful new beginning. She goes in search of Lazarus Jones, a fellow survivor who was struck dead, then simply got up and walked away. Perhaps this stranger who has seen death face to face can teach her to live without fear. When she finds him, he is her perfect opposite, a burning man whose breath can boil water and whose touch scorches. As an obsessive love affair begins between them, both hide their most dangerous secrets--what happened in the past that turned one to ice and the other to fire.A magical story of passion, loss, and renewal, The Ice Queen is Alice Hoffman at her electrifying best.

I thought about skipping this book club selection because I was pretty indifferent on the last Alice Hoffman book I read, but I love fairy tale retellings. Unfortunately, while the fairy-tale elements kept me going through the story, I didn‘t connect with this book either. The main character really irritated me and I didn‘t understand most of the other characters‘ motivations either. I‘ll complain/CW (personal to me, and spoilery) in a comment.

Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t think I would have read this book had I known it involved a character dying of pancreatic cancer. My father died of pancreatic cancer a couple years ago, and I‘m undergoing cancer treatment now myself. 10mo

Hi all… I‘m excited to start round 14 of #LMPBC with all of you. These are the four books I have picked out as options for magical realism. Let me know which one you all would like to read.

Hazel2019 The Ice Queen and The Bear and the Nightingale would be my top pics. But I‘ll go with whatever the group decides. 3y
wisherwishinguponastar These all sound great! “The Bear and the Nightingale” has been on my radar for a while, so if I had to choose it would be that one. 3y
Pogue The only one I have read is The Bear and the Nightingale. But I am up for anything. 3y
Littlewolf1 @Hazel2019 @booksellerofyourdiscontent @Pogue OK so I am going to go ahead and choose The Ice Queen since nobody has read it. 3y

I enjoyed this retelling of The Snow Queen for the #FairytaleReadingChallenge. It was my first time reading a Hoffman book that wasn‘t about the Owens family. Her lyrical, magical prose was still present but it was nice to experience some of her other characters. I‘m now 12/12 on the challenge for this year! Thanks for the fun idea @Charityann !

I have an unintentional fairytale theme going on. I picked this up because it was categorized as magical realism. Alice makes a wish and her mother disappears. 30 years later she makes another wish and is struck by lightning. This book was a bit odd at times. I‘ve never read Alice Hoffman before.

After being struck by lightning inside her home, the librarian goes in search of another lightning survivor. He turns out to be her opposite: while she has an icy heart, he is burning up-his breath can boil water and his touch scorches. Thus begins the fairy tale...not my favorite Hoffman but fun anyway

A beautiful fairy tale, about life, living, love, dying, and forgiveness. Sad, haunting, heartbreaking, and hopeful. A dreamlike quality to the writing, it felt like a 90s indie movie directed by Sofia Coppola.

#FairyTaleRetelling

I want to say at the outset that I would never have read this book absent #blameitonlitsy. But I‘m so happy that I did. A young girl wishes never to see her mother again, because her mother is going out for the evening. The egocentrism of very young children is behind the unnamed narrator‘s selfish wish; unfortunately the wish is fulfilled when her mother has an automobile accident owing to icy roads. ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (cont.) This is the setup for a retelling of Andersen‘s tale of a snow queen who takes a little boy who has ice splinters in his eyes and heart. After her mother‘s death, the young girl hardens her heart, only to have this hardening reified when she is struck by lightening. Now older, our “ice queen” seeks out other survivors of lightening strikes, and in so doing is not only healed, but transformed. I ended up loving this book for its ⬇️ 6y
gradcat ⬆️ language (poetic), philosophy (spiritual) and themes (redemptive). It‘s a beautiful, sumptuous book, full of wonderful imagery and wounding tragedy. This novel is powerful, and though it is not particularly aimed at me, I highly recommend it. 6y

Had I not been stranded on a six-hour flight with my Kindle's battery almost done and no other book in my hand luggage, I wouldn't have finished this book. Though I like Hoffman's writing in general, I have so many issues with this book, I don't know where to begin. Self-involved & really annoying character, plot holes, things happening just because. Only thing I liked was the magic realism and its original twist.
