A Cook's Tour
A Cook's Tour: In Search of the Perfect Meal | Anthony Bourdain
Dodging minefields in Cambodia, diving into the icy waters outside a Russian bath, Chef Bourdain travels the world over in search of the ultimate meal. The only thing Anthony Bourdain loves as much as cooking is traveling, and A Cook's Tour is the shotgun marriage of his two greatest passions. Inspired by the question, 'What would be the perfect meal?', Anthony sets out on a quest for his culinary holy grail. Our adventurous chef starts out in Japan, where he eats traditional Fugu, a poisonous blowfish which can be prepared only by specially licensed chefs. He then travels to Cambodia, up the mine-studded road to Pailin into autonomous Khmer Rouge territory and to Phnom Penh's Gun Club, where local fare is served up alongside a menu of available firearms. In Saigon, he's treated to a sustaining meal of live Cobra heart before moving on to savor a snack with the Viet Cong in the Mecong Delta. Further west, Kitchen Confidential fans will recognize the Gironde of Tony's youth, the first stop on his European itinerary. And from France, it's on to Portugal, where an entire village has been fattening a pig for months in anticipation of his arrival. And we're only halfway around the globe. . . A Cook's Tour recounts, in Bourdain's inimitable style, the adventures and misadventures of America's favorite chef.

Some of Bourdain‘s books I‘ve reread have been a bit disappointing, but not this one that ignited my original love of memoirs more than 20 years ago. It‘s good to read that initial enthusiasm and wonder he had for the world albeit with his trademark early cynicism, too. CT plays every night for free on PlutoTV, and I catch an episode every now and then and usually enjoy it. But I love reading later interviews, too, and how his outlook changed.

Megabooks It‘s sad how tired he looked near his death, though. This is my #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks 🎉 8mo
Larkken He was incredible in his flaws and in the joy and energy he brought to his work, esp at first 🖤 I‘ve been unable to try the biographical essays Woolever compiled, feels like it would turn me into a snot bomb. Have you read it? 8mo
Megabooks @Larkken I have! It‘s fantastic on audio, and I recently picked up a used print copy for the photos. He was such a cute little kid. I also enjoyed this by his long-time director. 8mo

I finished this a little while ago. It was a good read but tough in places. I skimmed some of those. Overall a good adventure around the world focused on finding the perfect meal. Getting this in the mail today. #LMPBC @Bookwormjillk @megnews @TheBookHippie @suvata

A reread for me (GoodReads says 2002!) & a very bittersweet one at that for my virtual foodie book club. There is no one truly like Anthony Bourdain, nor will there ever be any one like him 😭 with rough edges, passion for food & interest in the people all over the world who cook it, respect it & enjoy it. Not everything in this book would I love eating, but darn it all, Bourdain makes me think I might, my mostly vegetarian preferences aside! ⬇️

DebinHawaii I haven‘t been cooking much lately & rather than pull a dish from the book, I made what I was craving-an easy Tofu Tim Kha Soup full of Thai flavors. The link to my review & recipe: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2022/07/tofu-tom-kha-soup-for-cook-books.html... 2y

1. Tagged. I picked this up from the to-be-reviewed pile at my college newspaper during my last time in the office. I remember reading it on the train during my short-lived time working up north after graduating.
2. Probably US-based, and I appreciate ones set in places other than NYC, LA, SF or Chicago. Give me something different!!

Leaving Alaska and flying home for good. My husband had a mild heart attack this weekend and he is doing well but I need to go take care of him for awhile! He‘s doing well enough that he sent our daughter back to the house to get his book! So nothing is holding my attention right now but this is accompanying me on the long flight back...

I read Bourdain‘s Kitchen Confidential years ago and really enjoyed it. I attended an event where her spoke about his experiences and watched his show. I love his perspective. He made me less afraid of trying unfamiliar foods. I have had this on my shelf for years so here we go.

Still trying to process this one. Hubs and I adore Anthony Bourdain. It‘s easy to speculate about why, but I end up over-speculating, and thinking too much. Because I understand the beast that is depression, and every time this happens (and it isn‘t just the “famous” ones), I crumble a little.

I was very sad to hear of Anthony Bourdain's suicide. I was always rather envious of his lifestyle, because he got to travel all over the world and have all these experiences, but that just goes to show that you never know what is really going on in another person's life 😔

"We have a great friendship and great respect. We're very good friends. We laugh and it's comfortable because we can be calm, and sometimes we don't speak at all and we'll be happy together. I think he likes that a lot." --Eric Ripert, CNN

Woke up to the news of Anthony Bourdain & my heart is broken. An all-time favorite. My heart goes out to his family & his good friend & companion, Eric Ripert. RIP Anthony Bourdain ?

DebinHawaii It seems to be a difficult time for so many right now, myself included. So many of us are introverts & can find it difficult to share our feelings-but if for any reason you are feeling sad, overwhelmed or like you can't go on, please, please reach out to a friend, a virtual friend (like here on Litsy) or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK (8255) You are loved. 7y

#ReadingResolutions #TravelTuesday 🗺

I love books about good food, I love books about travel, I love books where people travel to find, taste, and/or cook good food. Here are nine travel foodie books I enjoyed. Some of the titles are a bit hard to see so I'll tag them in comments below.

Have you read any of these? Do you have a favorite foodie travel book?

Tried to read this for my book club, but I just can‘t get into it. The first few chapters just drag on and are cloaked with negative energy (which is Bourdain‘s specialty I suppose). Never understood the Anthony Bourdain hype.

I ADORE Tony Bourdain. I've loved every one of his shows and books because his dark humor and expert sarcasm is unparalleled. But episode 2.12 of "No Reservations" gives a glimpse into a side of Bourdain that isn't often on display. Absent is the abrasive Tony; he is somber and sad, and most of all, concerned for the people he has met, as Beirut erupts in a sudden and violent conflict, and he and his crew are caught in the middle. Heartbreaking.

Loved this.... Anthony Bourdain's writing captures a precarious balance of cynicism and true wonder that's very hard to achieve. His genuine passion for good food and good people leaps off the page, as he revels in the simplicities of tradition and family in the places he explores. My mouth watered, my feet itched and I laughed my arse off. This really spoke my language... Off now to binge watch the tv show... and crush on him just a little 😉💕
