The Color of Magic with Bonus Material
The Color of Magic with Bonus Material: A Discworld Novel | Terry Pratchett
This special e-book edition of The Color of Magic includes an excerpt of Terry Pratchetts latest novel, Snuff! Terry Pratchett's profoundly irreverent, bestselling novels have garnered him a revered position in the halls of parody next to the likes of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen. The Color of Magic is Terry Pratchett's maiden voyage through the now-legendary land of Discworld. This is where it all begins -- with the tourist Twoflower and his wizard guide, Rincewind.

Reread as a part of my Discworld marathon (1 down, 40 to go!). Turns out my first read of this novel was 10 years ago, how symbolic! I enjoyed this reread tremendously. Yes, this book is indeed very chaotic, I forgot how wild a ride it is, but oh, so much fun!

Getting out the word that HumbleBundle currently has a Discworld bundle, offering 39 Discworld books (is that all of them? I think it's all of them) for a donation of $18 or more benefiting Room to Read, a charity that supports literacy and gender equality in education.

Here you go: https://www.humblebundle.com/books/terry-pratchetts-discworld-harpercollins-book...

A delightful (if rather cynical) tale of wizards, magic, and tourism. Nearly Tolkien-esque levels of worldbuilding, with a snarky writing style that reminded me of Douglas Adams. I enjoyed getting to explore a fantasy world that was really fresh and unexpected. The Luggage may have been my favorite character.

What a nostalgic read!

It‘s different from the rest of the Discworld series but still enjoyable. The Death isn‘t as benevolent, and the humor is simpler, more surface level, but the seeds of the greatness are already there.

Twoflower is a tourist from another continent, but he reminds me of the casual reader immersed in a fantastic world.

What would the fantastical inhabitants think of us, readers, if the realities were flipped?

After poking about in the Discworld a bit with four novels, I decided to start at the beginning and read all 40+ books in order. This is the first one and I loved it. Not as cohesive as later books, but still satisfying to serious fanatics of Pratchett. Fate and Luck play a tense game involving specifically Rincewind, the failed wizard and Twoflowers, the world‘s first tourist. Only Death is disappointed. 💀😂

I almost never bail on a book but I couldn‘t get through this one. I know a lot of people love the disc world books…but at least this first one was not for me. I‘ve been told they can be read out of order but I have a hard time not starting at the beginning. Any recs on one I might like more?

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Think of it less like reading them out of order and more like reading books (some of them little series themselves) set within the same universe. I also started with this one and struggled - but I really enjoyed The City Watch books which start with Guards! Guards! I also really enjoyed the miniseries of Going Postal - although I haven‘t yet read the book it‘s based on. 2y
Blaire @thegirlwiththelibrarybag thank you so much! That‘s really helpful. 2y
Graywacke I find I‘m unusual in liking this first messy book. I just love the luggage and gawking at how annoying Twoflower is. So that hinders any advice I can give. But they do get better from here because he plots much much better. And he gets a little easier to follow as he dries up his unseen university humor (a play on the Latin intellectual underground of Europe‘s Enlightenment under monarchic censorship era.) 2y
See All 10 Comments
Blaire @Graywacke thanks! I wasn‘t sure what I was getting into when I started and got about 1/3 of the way through and decided this wasn‘t the one for me. 2y
Graywacke @Blaire understand. He was of a mindset. You might try a later book. His best were probably published 1990-1995. His mindset doesn‘t change, but he creates several lovable characters. (As opposed to horrible Twoflower and sadly pathetic Rincewind - both of whom I adore ☺️) 2y
Fr3NcHtOaSt I loved this book. I could not put it down once I started. 2y
CarolynM @Graywacke I liked this first one too, (it was the first one I read, back when there were only 4 or 5 published) but I agree it‘s far from his best. I object to you calling Twoflower horrible though - I still giggle about him teaching the four horsemen of the apocalypse to play bridge. 2y
Graywacke @CarolynM oh, Twoflower is wonderfully horrifying. But i had forgotten that! 2y
BarbaraJean Stopping in late to the party here! I started reading Pratchett with the Tiffany Aching books & definitely recommend that series within Discworld. I absolutely love Tiffany as a character & the growing depth of the books over the series is just fantastic. I haven‘t read many other Discworld books yet, partly because like you, I have a hard time not starting at the beginning! I loved Mort, though—the Death books might be another good entry point. (edited) 2y
Blaire @BarbaraJean thank you! I‘ve really appreciated everyone‘s comments. Super helpful in knowing how to approach this series in a way that will work for me. 2y

Starting a Discworld re-read with the very first book. It might not be the best, but it's still a lot of fun, brimming with clever ideas, and I have a soft spot for cowardly, failed wizard Rincewind.

I know the first few Discworld books don‘t get a lot of love (and they definitely do get better as the series goes on), but I absolutely love this one. Terry Pratchett was an outstanding writer. I‘d forgotten how much I enjoy the many, many misadventures of Rincewind, Twoflower… and the Luggage.

My first foray in this world. I liked some parts more than others. Sometimes it was a bit meh. I unfortunately didn't get any of the jokes, references etc, but I've discovered there's a whole world on the internet where this is discussed forever. I am going to read more books in this series.

"I think I've missed something along the way," he said. "First we were told we were going to be slaves-"

"A base canard!" interrupted Garhartra.

"What's a canard?" said Twoflower.

"I think it's a kind of duck," said Rincewind from the end of a long table.

"What is your name?" he said, as reassuringly as he could manage. She might be frightened, but she did have the wand. If I had a wand like that, he thought, I wouldn't be frightened of anything. So what in Creation can she imagine I could do?

"My name is immaterial," she said.

"That's a pretty name," said Rincewind.

Terry Pratchett's riff on the traditional fantasy tropes is just a lot of fun. The world is mind-bending and not always logical, but, that's okay. Too much logic is rather depressing. My one quibble is that I found Rincewind to be so cowardly and smarmy. He annoyed me a lot, but he was more than offset by Twoflower the tourist and his adventuresome spirit. A nice way to finish this god-awful year.

Finally got there and read my first Terry Pratchett! The story is full of imagination and I laughed out loud several times. If there is a downside is that sometimes is a bit too imaginative, like chaotic imagination,"wait a second, what's happening?" moments(I know, the Little Prince would be ashamed of the adult that I've become?).I love Twoflower and the evolution of Rincewind.I can't wait to continue the series because I see a lot of potential.

I just love this explanation of dragons as a mix between magic and imagination. It starts on the previous page with: "Oh well, you see, the truth of the matter is that dragons never existed as you (and, until I was poisoned some three months ago, I) understand existence. I'm talking about the true dragon, draconis nobilis..."

Soubhiville @TheNeverendingTBR This series is so much fun! The first few books aren‘t as strong as the rest, so if you‘d like a taste of what they are actually like I‘d suggest one further in- Wyrd Sisters or Reaper Man maybe. Each book stands alone, so I don‘t think it ruins anything to read out of order. Although there is some progression in each storyline (the witches, Death, the Unseen University.) 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Soubhiville Oh, I never knew that. Thanks for the feedback, I'll need to look into it! 💫 4y
swynn @TheNeverendingTBR @Soubhiville I haven't read the whole series (Yet!) But I've never read a dud among them. I second Soubhi's opinion that they can be read out of order, though there is some benefit to be had from reading some subseries in sequence. Google "reading order Discworld" for more advice than one person can follow. 4y

♉️ Prompt 13 • Read a book that you thought was ambitious,

From what i read about DiscWorld, A flat world sitting on the backs of four elephants who hurtle through space balanced on a giant turtle 🐢🌌 definitely sounds ambitious. its a large series and i‘m diving into the first book today💕 Terry Pratchett is also a fellow taurus ♉️
