People Uno degli esordi pi attesi dell'anno. Publishers Weekly A VOLTE, PER RITROVARE LA FELICIT BASTA GIRARE PAGINA...

Of course I loved the added focus on an on e-books vs print books. As someone who was also a daddy's girl, this book also pulled at my heartstrings in the best of ways and triggered some of my own fond memories. The text messages between Alice and her father were endearing and poignant. This was such a delight to read I found myself missing Alice once I was finished, which is always a good sign. This book had me at childhood Alice with her bookcart.

This book perfectly captures the ups, downs, roller coaster and tug-of-war feelings of a mom of three working full-time outside the home. Very realistic, not judgmental pro or con. Very easy-to-relate-to main character. Well-developed characters.

Alice Pearce has it all-a loving husband, 3 adorable kids and a part time job that she loves. Then her husband makes a sudden career change and she‘s forced to find a full time job. This started out okay but then really dragged.

Cute, predictable story about a Mom of 3 who has to return to the full time work force. I'd classify this as a beach read; it's light and fast.

Predictable, but entertaining. Although the main character and I have a lot in common (married mother of three trying to balance work and family), I didn‘t fully connect with her.

Appreciate that this book aims to call BS on the idea that “having it all” should be a goal for every woman. But the thing is, the protagonist DID basically have it all, but makes a career choice which made no sense at all in the context of what we know about her. (Also HOW she got the job was absurd.) Not terrible but also just not that interesting. Very day-in-the-life w/too much monotony, & weird mix of sporadic darkness & fluff. 2/5 ⭐️

MrBook Great review! 6y

I forced my memory to zoom out, like the long lens of a camera. You had to keep the picture at a wide angle – that was the trick. The devastation was in the details.

[Very true. But hard to read when you‘re also in mourning and going back and forth between that wide angle and grabbing for each one of those little details 😞]

I enjoyed this - it‘s funny and feels true to life. One thing I particularly liked was the Google-Amazon-Starbucks-Target hybrid company Alice goes to work for. I thought its techbro tone deaf start-up approach to books was believable without being too much of a rip off from real life.

I could relate so much to the main character who was trying to “do it all.” Being a working mom with a demanding job, taking care of a sick parent, managing her husband‘s and her own mental health, the list goes on. I have so many roles and end most of my days literally exhausted. I wish this one had a bit more substance to grab on to, but overall I give it 3.5 ⭐️ #motherhood #marriage #workingmom

This was billed as perfect for fans of Where‘d you go, Bernadette and The Storied Life of AJ Fikry, two of my very favorites. It was nowhere close to either. While I got hints of Bernadette, there was zero AJ. For the most part, I liked the characters and storyline, but it dragged on for way too long, and I spent the second half of the book just wanting to be done. That said, I did keep reading, which makes it a so-so vs. a pan/bail.

Alice is struggling with demanding kids, a sick/elderly parent, and has an out of work husband with a drinking problem. It wasn't so much what she had to deal with (Egan really pours it on thick), but how she deals with things. Readers may identify with her and be entertained, or not relate and find the book dull. Or maybe be too distracted by their own busy lives and feel guilty for indulging in reading when they should be doing other things.

A women's fiction novel all about books and bookstores. I loved the references to Workman books (What to Expect When You're Expecting, 14,000 ways to Be Happy), & the mentions of NYC & Cleveland locales like Malley's Chocolate.

Her struggles balancing family & work sometimes annoyed me as she was harsh with her kids & hubby for terrible reasons. But maybe I would understand more if I was a mom. Entertaining story with a hint of emotion.

#TBRtemptation post 9! Like Kate Reddy and Bridget Jones, Alice Pearse plays many roles: mother of 3, attentive daughter, dog-owner, part-time editor. When her husband makes a career change, she lands a job at the start-up Scroll, a chain of chic literary lounges dedicated to the classics. Her bookstore-owning best friend disapproves, her dad's sick, her marriage flounders, the kids grow up, etc. Can you have it all? #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Seriously! Quite a false note here, in an otherwise believable narrative. How could a reader whose best friend owns a bookstore and who worked as a book reviewer for a magazine not know what a TBR list is?!?

teebe TBR seems to be a relatively new acronym? I had never heard it before about 2 years ago when I started watching booktube. And it was definitely not something we used in the journalism industry. 8y
BookishMarginalia @teebe Good point. I still think a voracious reader with a bookstore owner BFF would know, but this makes me feel better 🤓 8y
Carol I blog for the library where I work. I sometimes need to remind my editor (an otherwise hip and nerdy librarian) what it stands for. "Will people know what this means or should you spell it out?" "Dude, our subscribers are readers. Either they'll understand or they'll leave a comment asking for clarification. Either way is a win!" ? 8y
Gonerogue I am a voracious reader (my whole life), have worked in used bookstore and library, watch booktubers, and my first (known) introduction to TBR list was this website... 8y

If a book takes me more than 5 tries to actually get me engaged on the story and it hasn't by that point, I bail. There are far too many good books out there for me to read.

Sue Life is too short for bad books. 5 attempts is very generous! 9y
