One Thousand and One Nights: A Retelling
One Thousand and One Nights: A Retelling | Hanan Al-Shaykh
15 posts | 11 read | 24 to read
Passed down over centuries from India, Persia, and across the Arab world, the mesmerizing stories of One Thousand and One Nights are related by the beautiful, young Shahrazad as she attempts to delay her execution. Retold in modern English by the acclaimed Lebanese author Hanan al-Shaykh, here are stories of the real and the supernatural, love and marriage, power and punishment, wealth and poverty, and the endless trials and uncertainties of fate. Bringing together nineteen classic tales, in these pages al-Shaykh weaves an utterly intoxicating collection, rich with humor, violence, and romance.

MuddyPuddle 48 for me, too – North Dakota was my 47th. Went way out of my way on a cross country trip, but was so worth it! Drove the entire southern width, so much to experience and see! 7y
Hooked_on_books @MuddyPuddle I had quite the goal when I was younger to get to all 50 states, so I planned a long, meandering road trip home after college to knock off several, including the 2 I haven‘t gotten to. My car broke down in South Dakota and derailed the rest of the trip. Oh well, someday! 7y

Recently reviewed this excellent retelling of 19 tales from 1001 nights- appropriate for today's #genieinabottle challenge, but i thought the one genie in a lamp story was one of the weaker ones. There was a good one about two djinns who have a friendly competition to seduce a prince and princess. No lamp or bottle involved though. #augustgrrrl @Cinfhen

If you're like me and you've never read any of 1001 Nights and have been curious but questioned your resolve- this is perfect: 19 tales selected and retold by a talented modern author. So unbelievably entertaining- an odd mix of fantastic and sometimes horrifying elements, yet it's got a silliness to it too. Blood, sex, love, and betrayal abound in these stories within stories but Scheherazade also sneaks in some feminist messages too.

DivineDiana I am currently watching a series called 1001 Nights on Netflix. It has subtitles since it is in Turkish. The main character is named Scheherazade and there are so many references to the book. Beautiful musical score of Scheherazade. Istanbul looks gorgeous! 7y
batsy I'm going to need this edition with a foreword by Mary Gaitskill 😍 7y
merelybookish I was blown away the first time I read some of the 1001 Nights. They really are kind of amazing and have everything in them! 7y

JazzFeathers I read a selection of the stories when l was a kid. Don't remember much other than l liked them 😆 7y
Leftcoastzen I'm with @batsy ! I need it too! 7y
Billypar @DivineDiana Ooh sounds good... So this takes place in modern times and is inspired by the stories? 7y
Billypar @batsy @Leftcoastzen I was on the fence when I was picking it out at the library but that fact put me over the edge. Do you have a favorite Gaitskill? I only read 'Because They Wanted To' but was looking to try another one. 7y
Billypar @merelybookish @JazzFeathers I feel like i have this bias that really old works (you know, pre-1980 😋) can't shock or surprise but I'm constantly wrong about that and this is a perfect example. 7y
batsy @Billypar This one is my fave but I've not read all of her books 7y
Billypar @batsy Ooh sounds good... Didn't realize this one was a novel and not a collection. Stacked! 7y
Leftcoastzen @Billypar @batsy I love "2 girls" as well , the stories book, her first, seemed way ahead of its time 1988 (edited) 7y
batsy @Leftcoastzen @Billypar This is on my #LitsyAtoZ, can't wait to get to it 👍 7y
DivineDiana @Billypar Yes, modern times. There is a thread that runs through it that refers to 1001 Nights. 7y
Sace How did this book get past me? Stacked. 7y

DNF. Lots of sexist and misogynistic language by men in these stories (was intended to humorous, but far from it). One part was transphobic and there were some racist aspects in this book. From what I've heard about other editions of OTAON, I won't be reading them as well.

Hello Bookworms!
💕
What is the best translation of 1001 nights? Any opinions?

tpixie @MrBook do u have any idea? 7y
MrBook Excellent question! I've read a couple of them. I know the go-to is Richard Burton's. But, one of my English profs got me onto Husain Haddawy's. He said it holds truer to the source material. I trusted him--his speciality is Middle English, lol, so he's a bit of an older version of Dan Brown's Robert Langdon 😉👍🏻. I have the copies somewhere, if I had them I'd mail them to you for your pleasure. Sorry about that. 7y
Gulfskye I've read several but Burton's is my favorite. I read in the forward of the edition I have that Burton's wife was going through his papers after he died and was horrified at what she found and destroyed everything. I can only imagine the history lost. 7y

Oh, Aladdin... With his dreams of becoming a prince to win the hand of the princess and a genie under his command for three wishes, he is definitely a #KingOfWishfulThinking. #Characters2017

#magiccarpetride makes me think, of course, of Aladdin; which leads to Sheherazade and the One Thousand and One Nights. Top image is from Wikipedia of an Arabic manuscript dating back to the 14th century.

Not quite a #bookwithinabook, but it's got the same feel. One story is embedded in another, leading to another, which you can't really understand until you've heard this other story, and then you've forgotten just how it all started. No wonder Shahrazad kept her life! She's the greatest storyteller ever! #ReadJanuary

Fabulous. Stories within bawdy stories. Clever women and (sometimes) clueless men. Shimmering web of tales. The book ended too soon, my only complaint.
