Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories
Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories | Flannery O'Connor
ONE OF THE GREATEST AMERICAN SHORT STORY COLLECTIONSIn 1955, with this short story collection, Flannery O'Connor firmly laid claim to her place as one of the most original and provocative writers of her generation. Steeped in a Southern Gothic tradition that would become synonymous with her name, these stories show O'Connor's unique, grotesque view of life-- infused with religious symbolism, haunted by apocalyptic possibility, sustained by the tragic comedy of human behavior, confronted by the necessity of salvation. With these classic stories-- including "The Life You Save May Be Your Own," "Good Country People," "The Displaced Person," and seven other acclaimed tales-- O'Connor earned a permanent place in the hearts of American readers."Much savagery, compassion, farce, art, and truth have gone into these stories. O'Connor's characters are wholeheartedly horrible, and almost better than life. I find it hard to think of a funnier or more frightening writer." -- Robert Lowell "In these stories the rural South is, for the first time, viewed by a writer who orthodoxy matches her talent. The results are revolutionary." -- The New York Times Book Review Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) was born in Savannah, Georgia. She earned her M.F.A. at the University of Iowa, but lived most of her life in the South, where she became an anomaly among post-World War II authors-- a Roman Catholic woman whose stated purpose was to reveal the mystery of God's grace in everyday life. Her work-- novels, short stories, letters, and criticism-- received a number of awards, including the National Book Award.

Quick stop at Flannery O‘Connor‘s childhood home in Savannah! There was the cutest Little Free Library underneath the staircase. I‘d forgotten that O‘Connor was only 39 years old when she died. What a heartbreakingly short life.

Here we go! March‘s #bookspin and #doublespin

So, I hadn‘t quite finished Mockingjay, my February double spin, so I left it in spot 20, thinking there‘s no way it would get picked again! 🫣 It feels a little bit like cheating, but I‘m leaving it, because there‘s so many books on my list that I‘m excited to read!

Thank you so much for hosting, @TheAromaofBooks ! #bookspin is my favorite!

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Sounds like February's DoubleSpin was the first half and March's is the second half 😁 2y
GinaKButler @TheAromaofBooks Isn‘t that the truth! In February, I was planning on reading the second one in the trilogy and added this one at the last minute, thinking “what are the chances she‘ll pick this?” I should know better! 😂 2y

I read many of these in college, but it‘s been nearly 20 yrs🙈 A friend of mine started a podcast dedicated to her short stories and asked me to be on a couple of episodes. I decided to re-read all of these. In this time of Black Lives Matter movement, especially where I live in Richmond, it‘s so sad how many of these themes haven‘t changed. Her writing is shocking for many reasons and she is a product of her time. But she can write a short story

My friend created a podcast on O‘Connors‘ short stories and I am featured on a couple of the episodes! 💁‍♀️ Figured I‘d dust off this text from my college days and give it a re-read. And check out his podcast: “Everything That Rises” on Apple Podcasts!

I didn‘t love this book. Don‘t get me wrong, Flannery O‘Connor is an excellent writer and I believe accomplished exactly what she set out to do here, however, it does become a bit tedious after a while. That is my only real criticism. I do think that she intended the heavy, oppressive atmosphere throughout the book. I just personally want a little less bleakness every so often.

I had a nightmare I got shot after reading this book, and it wasn‘t because of the titular story.

Recommend to fans of the Cohen Brothers, Quentin Tarantino, and Martin McDonagh.

I liked this collection. It is a mirror that reflects southern society at the time it was written as we undoubtable judge the morals / character of the people we meet in its pages. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

rustoryhuf You need to make a trip to Georgia and visit her birth home in Savannah and Andalusia in Milledgeville. My daughter and I went to far to find her grave. Love her writings. 8y
Jess_Read_This @rustoryhuf We went to her childhood home in Savannah last September! We plan on making the trip to Milledgeville this September. She's just fascinating! When the hurricane went through Savannah last Sept, we lost power and entertained ourselves reading her stories aloud via candlelight. It was one of my most memorable vacations in Savannah! 😊 8y

Part 2 in books I know I read but now don't remember. I even think I wrote an essay for a 20th century American lit class about O'Connor and Southern Gothic. 🙄

Somehow I'm 30 years old and have lived in the south all my life but haven't read a single piece of Flannery O'Connor's work ...until today! 📚

CrowCAH I live in the north and still have not read any O'Connor! Lol 8y
kyraleseberg @CrowCAH Lol! She is such a giant literary figure here in Georgia (she was born and raised in Savannah) that it really surprises me I've made it this long without reading her, either voluntarily or required reading in school. 8y
CrowCAH @kyraleseberg wow I am amazed you lasted this long; happy reading! 📚 8y
Jess_Read_This I just started reading her works after we visited her childhood home on our last Savannah visit. 8y

Moving on to Flannery O'Connor in Southern Lit. Listening to some of the short stories this morning before jumping into the novel.

lynneamch Here's a beautiful fictional account of her later years in Milledgeville, and the impact she has on her neighbors. 8y

God Bless Overdrive! I listened to this on my drive back to North Carolina (mostly for the Southern-ness). I liked most of the stories the title one obviously being one of the best. That's the only reason it's getting a so-so. Highly recommend.
