Quick stop at Flannery O‘Connor‘s childhood home in Savannah! There was the cutest Little Free Library underneath the staircase. I‘d forgotten that O‘Connor was only 39 years old when she died. What a heartbreakingly short life.
Starting this collection of short stores today…it‘s my March #bookspin

Here we go! March‘s #bookspin and #doublespin
So, I hadn‘t quite finished Mockingjay, my February double spin, so I left it in spot 20, thinking there‘s no way it would get picked again! 🫣 It feels a little bit like cheating, but I‘m leaving it, because there‘s so many books on my list that I‘m excited to read!
Thank you so much for hosting, @TheAromaofBooks ! #bookspin is my favorite!
I read many of these in college, but it‘s been nearly 20 yrs🙈 A friend of mine started a podcast dedicated to her short stories and asked me to be on a couple of episodes. I decided to re-read all of these. In this time of Black Lives Matter movement, especially where I live in Richmond, it‘s so sad how many of these themes haven‘t changed. Her writing is shocking for many reasons and she is a product of her time. But she can write a short story
My friend created a podcast on O‘Connors‘ short stories and I am featured on a couple of the episodes! 💁♀️ Figured I‘d dust off this text from my college days and give it a re-read. And check out his podcast: “Everything That Rises” on Apple Podcasts!
I didn‘t love this book. Don‘t get me wrong, Flannery O‘Connor is an excellent writer and I believe accomplished exactly what she set out to do here, however, it does become a bit tedious after a while. That is my only real criticism. I do think that she intended the heavy, oppressive atmosphere throughout the book. I just personally want a little less bleakness every so often.
My first Flannery O‘Connor. It definitely won‘t be my last. ❣️
"Deep in the sky a storm was preparing very slowly and without thunder as if it meant to drain every drop of air from the earth before it broke."
-"The Life You Save May Be Your Own'
"The air was so quiet he could hear the broken pieces of the sun knocking in the water."
-"The River"
I had a nightmare I got shot after reading this book, and it wasn‘t because of the titular story.
Recommend to fans of the Cohen Brothers, Quentin Tarantino, and Martin McDonagh.
I liked this collection. It is a mirror that reflects southern society at the time it was written as we undoubtable judge the morals / character of the people we meet in its pages. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Almost done with this one, one of two bonuses for the @thereadingwomen Reading Challenge.
Ready to represent at the Flannery O‘ Connor‘s childhood home‘s annual Peacock Party
"I guess a good man IS hard to find!"
-A little late addition to the #titlewithgood in the #AprilBookShower challenge. I just love Flannery O'Connor and didn't want to miss out on this one!

Part 2 in books I know I read but now don't remember. I even think I wrote an essay for a 20th century American lit class about O'Connor and Southern Gothic. 🙄

#titlewithgood #aprilbookshowers. I love when I can easily find books for a prompt without digging through my shelves. I have read two of these and hope to read the other two this month if my library holds stop flooding in.
Mini #bookhaul from my local used bookstore. Love short story collections. #shortstories #usedbooks #bookstore
Somehow I'm 30 years old and have lived in the south all my life but haven't read a single piece of Flannery O'Connor's work ...until today! 📚
Moving on to Flannery O'Connor in Southern Lit. Listening to some of the short stories this morning before jumping into the novel.
I swear, one day I will finish these stories.
Short story collections are not my favorite reading format, but that's my own hangup. I still managed to find some excellent #shortstories sitting on my bookshelves. #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge
It's National Dog Day! Here are Mabel Flannery and Melville Leroy wishing you a most spectacular weekend!
God Bless Overdrive! I listened to this on my drive back to North Carolina (mostly for the Southern-ness). I liked most of the stories the title one obviously being one of the best. That's the only reason it's getting a so-so. Highly recommend.
Encountering the problem of salvation via the Southern grotesque.
I'm really enjoying O'Connor's writing style. Her stories feel at times like a punch in the stomach.
"He seemed to be a young man but he had a look of composed dissatisfaction as if he understood life thoroughly."
