I now work in the kids department of our bookstore and I thought it was time to brush up on children's fiction while revisiting old favorites. This story is still magical and still absorbing even as an adult. The world-building, the characters...it's all aged very gracefully and still worthy of being picked up and read. ❤️

I wasn't that impressed, I have to say. Knowing it was also a Christian allegory, I kept thinking to myself while reading it, “Why did you have to create a FANTASY about something you believe so fervently is real? Seeing how preposterous the fantasy was made me see the biblical story in that light as well. And no matter how I tried, I found it difficult to suspend my disbelief.

★★★☆☆ My third or fourth reading of this book, I believe. Unfortunately, it was just middle-of-the road for me this time, probably due to the fact that my attitudes to religion, monarchy, and fiction have changed so much over the last decade. Not a bad story, but I don't see it as great anymore either.

Bookwomble I pretty much tune out the Christianity and monarchy, take in the universal symbolism, and enjoy the talking animals 😊 2y
bibliothecarivs That sounds like a great plan. Next time. 2y

Well-written. Beautifully structured. The lion, the witch and the Wardrobe is a magical book that introduces me to a new world Narnia filled with magical wonders. I like how the author vividly describes a character, enabling me to put myself in his/her shoes.

Must-read if you want to embark on new adventures in a magical world.

At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more,
When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death,
And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.”

Thanks for the tag @TheAromaofBooks
1. I do remember 9/11 vaguely I was 7
Local was the mayor, who our class had visited and he talked about loving his job, was fired for embezzlement.
2. Library because of Libby and hoopla I do still buy many books though
3. The tagged really jump started my true enjoyment. I read before but not as much until this series!

I loved this book when I first read it, have reread it at least once or twice since, and loved the audio again today. I‘m so far behind on the #NarniaReadalong that I gave in and downloaded the audio because I really want to revisit these stories. They will be short and enjoyable listens between my other audiobooks.

I didn't clear the board this month but I made solid progress & also read several books NOT on my list haha Peter Pan was the only definite bust. Lots of decent reads & a few I thoroughly enjoyed. Rereading the tagged was actually probably my favorite of the month. This week, I've been reading P&P variations just to veg out my brain 😂

Quick catch-up for the #narniareadalong today!!!
Phew 😅 so glad there are a few extra days for people like me!!
I read & enjoyed the last couple of chapters and was amazed at how much suspense and emotion I felt. Also was surprised at how short and dense the book is.
I realized I really had no clear memory of the ending from my childhood.

I‘ve thoroughly enjoyed re-reading this first installment ~ and now straight on to Prince Caspian🗡 🙌🏼

CaffeineAndCandy It was interesting that the book went back and forth between the separated characters with it being so short. Maximum fun 💜💜💜 4y

This is definitely the one book I‘ve read the most out of The Chronicles of amarnos series. The boxed set my grandmother bought me featured the books in publication order, so this was also the first book I read when in first read the series. Always love revisiting it and look forward to rereads of the rest for the #NarniaReadalong. #BookSpinBingo

TEArificbooks That is really neat you have that set. I just ordered a new set for my kids they are in chronological order so The Magicians Nephew is number one. 4y
Skygoddess1 @mdm139 My grandmother bought it for me when I was little at a Scholastic book fair her school where she taught held. She then held on to it for about five or six years until I was older and could read it as this set came out in 1987 and I was only 3 at the time, lol. My sister‘s set from when she was young that our grandmother gave herís in chronological order. 4y
TheAromaofBooks My set is technically in chronological order but I always read them in published order because that's my favorite. I think Magician's Nephew loses some of its magic when you read it first, because you don't really understand many of the things it explains. Anyway, I've also been enjoying rereading this one!! 4y

#7days7books Day 4
To a little girl growing up on a tropical island, unable to grasp the concept that outside air could be as cold as a refrigerator, a story about going through an ordinary wardrobe into a snowy land was magical. I never read the rest of the series, though my kids did.
(The other children‘s book that affected me was The Little House on the Prairie series).

Having not remembered much about the Magicians Nephew, I remembered everything about this book! Such a fab trip down memory lane. I had forgotten how much fun Mr Tumnus is though! Oh to have a dinner party with this one would be the dream.

Its always a risky business doing rereads of your favourite childhood classics but so far this is working out for me. Enjoying these books immensely.

Now to go explore my wardrobe .....

tpixie I have a wardrobe of my grandma‘s. I‘m still hoping ( at 59 yo) to be able to go to Narnia!) 5y

This MF, ALA Notable Book follows the Pevensie children during wartime England in 1940. The youngest, Lucy stumbles upon a wardrobe that leads into another land called Narnia. This book would be great as a RA, which is how I was introduced to the book as a student. contains discussion questions for this book. #UCFLAE3414SP20

hadassajl UDL 3.1, which supplies background knowledge works because you can teach about the blitz in England and WW2. EL 17 which provides contextual support through audio visuals works great as well because you can use clips from the movie to enhance visualization. 5y

Earlier this year I was thinking about ole Lewis. I couldn‘t remember how many of these books I read as a kid. I thought I might read them all this year. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I‘m not a big fantasy fan, but I do love fantasy adjacent stuff.
This book was a jaunt, compared to LOTR & I wonder why it hasn‘t taken off like the potterverse maybe I‘ll find out.
This picture I took while getting carts from the parking lot at work, this is some sloppy winter weather

I can see the “this is an analogy of Christianity”. Whether or not Lewis intended that 🤷‍♀️ and don‘t care. It was well written and developed like Lewis is great at. The characters are fun and the story is a fun fantasy.
I decided I‘m going to read these in publication order as Lewis intended as opposed to what publishers decided long after the fact.

BookmarkTavern Is this your first time reading this series? I adore these books. My dad read them to me when I was a child, and I‘ve reread them several times since then. 5y
Bookwomble I know you don't care, but Lewis definitely did intend the Christian allegory 😇 5y
OrangeMooseReads @ozma.of.oz yes my first time. I have a copy of this I just never got around to reading it. 5y

OrangeMooseReads @Bookwomble it doesn‘t take away from the fantasy aspect of it. 5y
Bookwomble @OrangeMooseReads No, I quite agree. I find the "message" a bit too heavy-handed at times, and prefer it when Lewis seems more content to simply tell a good story ?? 5y
erank58 I DEF recommend reading these in publication order instead of chronological. The world slowly comes together, and things are revealed gradually. Much more fun :) 5y
megnews The last published which is the first chronologically is my favorite! Then The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. 5y
BookmarkTavern I am so excited for you! Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Horse and His Boy are my favorites! I hope you enjoy them all! 5y
OrangeMooseReads @Bookwomble it‘s very heavy at times especially at the beginning. He was a fantastic story teller. 5y
OrangeMooseReads @erank58 I never even knew that there was any other order until I downloaded this and it shows book 2 and I got confused lol 5y
OrangeMooseReads @ozma.of.oz I‘ve never seen the movies either. Before reading this I only had the gist of of it and don‘t really know the stories in the other books. I‘m excited. 5y

Day 5 of the #30DayBookChallenge is a Favorite classic book. I struggled a bit with this question, because there's ones I love, but when I think of favorite, I think of something that I can always pick up and read. So, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe it is! To this day, it's hard to pass by an old wardrobe without wanting to check it (well, first for boggarts) for passage to Narnia.
