He Said/She Said
He Said/She Said: A Novel | Erin Kelly
"A tour de force a gripping, twisting, furiously clever read that asks all the right questions, and keeps you guessing until the very end. I loved it." --Ruth Ware, bestselling author of The Woman in Cabin 10 In the summer of 1999, Kit and Laura travel to a festival in Cornwall to see a total eclipse of the sun. Kit is an eclipse chaser; Laura has never seen one before. Young and in love, they are certain this will be the first of many theyll share. But in the hushed moments after the shadow passes, Laura interrupts a man and a woman. She knows that she saw something terrible. The man denies it. It is her word against his. The victim seems grateful. Months later, she turns up on their doorstep like a lonely stray. But as her gratitude takes a twisted turn, Laura begins to wonderdid she trust the wrong person? 15 years later, Kit and Laura married are living under new names and completely off the digital grid: no Facebook, only rudimentary cell phones, not in any directories. But as the truth catches up to them, they realize they can no longer keep the past in the past. From Erin Kelly, queen of the killer twist, He Said/She Said is a gripping tale of the lies we tell to save ourselves, the truths we cannot admit, and how far we will go to make others believe our side of the story.

Psychological thrillers aren‘t really my thing any more - I read so many in my youth that I can generally see the twists coming way before they happen. This one managed to surprise me, so full marks for that. Probably won‘t read any more by this author though, as her next one seems to start off on the same Secrets & Lies path that this one took. The audio was well done, but that may have just been the British accents swaying me. Good, not great.

Wow, this certainly took some unexpected turns!

I haven't read a domestic thriller for ages and the ones I have read have felt disappointing after Gone Girl. In my opinion, He Said / She Said definitely holds its own in the genre.

The build up during the first three quarters of the book is slow but intense and then bang, that last quarter could cause whiplash.

Unpopular opinion ....?
I know this is a well love thriller and a lot of people recommended it to me. But unfortunately I didn't like as much. The slow pace and disconnection with the characters made it a bit of a drag to me.
And I was very disappointed with the "twist" as it was my prediction all along.

I'm of the opinion that if this was written as a courtroom drama and the twist was totally nullified I would have enjoyed it more.

Enchanted_Bibliophile @TheAromaofBooks this was my June #DoubleSpin. A bit late; but rather late than never.😉 4y

The plot is brilliantly worked out and fits together perfectly. But one character who has seemed — who actually is — sympathetic, is revealed to have behaved with appalling cruelty, and to have done so out of weakness (and a surprising failure of empathy) rather than malevolence. The unravelling of the plot is handled with great skill but is at the same time utterly dispiriting.

Finished reading He Said / She Said and even though it did drag on at times it was an enjoyable read. A mystery thriller where a couple decide to change their names and cover their tracks after an event from their past. You keep reading because you want to find out what is going to happen next but it could have used a few less pages. I was able to figure out part of the twist in the end.

Started the New Year by picking a book that I would have never picked up myself if it hadn't been a Christmas gift. Enjoying it with some peach tea that was also received for Christmas. Good book so far that is making me want to read more. Although, I do feel this book might end up dragging on for too long. About half way through and I find myself urging the book to move along.

I almost bailed on this audiobook a few times but stuck it out, and the end was fairly twisty so I guess I‘m glad I did. The first half bored me and I found Laura‘s emotional hand wringing particularly overdrawn and predictable. Overall, way too long and very meh.

This mystery- thriller-suspense story keeps you hooked. Some aspects of the story take a while to unfold and behavior of some of the characters is confusing, but you keep reading and guessing. This is a story where nothing is as it appears, there are secrets, lies, issues of trust and multiple twists.

Although this thriller was a little long-winded, I am a big fan of Kelly and this is my third outing with her. Spanning 15 years, the novel tells the story of Laura and Kit and the event, at an eclipse festival in Cornwall, that changes their lives forever. Well-written and clever, and definitely a page turner once you hit the the half way point.

I was a little ambivalent about the book at first; it started slowly and (spoiler alert! And trigger warning!) I was worried the plot centered on a false rape accusation and I am not here for that content in 2018. But I was ultimately happy with this book: it was well-written and full of twists that kept me guessing till the end.

#HeatofJuly Who could ever forget THAT shocking and totally raunchy rendition of Miley Cyrus‘ “We Can‘t Stop,” mashed with Robin Thicke‘s controversial summer smash #BlurredLines at the 2013 MTV VMA ?!?!?
“Not only was culture changed, but my life and career were changed forever,” Miley stated.

#BlurredLines should not exist nor the defense He Said/ She Said ONLY YES means YES

Burghbookaddict I hated this so much. I hate this song. I hate him. And this performance made me hate her. I've cooled down a little bit towards her over the years but this was so gross I can't even. Robin Thicke was like 72 and she was what, around 20? Disgusting. 6y

Cinfhen I‘m pretty sure that horrible performance busted his marriage and turned Miley into a social pariah @laurenashley It really was disturbing! Agreed @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 😢😱🤮 (edited) 6y
Weaponxgirl @laurenashley whilst I didn't like her performance I really hated the slut shaming that came out in force against her and the trying to place him as a victim who's a married man. The guy just wrote a rape song and she's the villain?! In trainwreck the author talked about how miley was sexualised all her career but as soon as she gave it to us freely people turned on her as she wasn't apologetic about it. 6y
Burghbookaddict @Weaponxgirl Yeah, that's the reason I've come around to her over the years. Because I realized she was basically just a kid and was being encouraged to act that way. But he was a grown ass man with a wife that should have known better. There's no excuse for him. 6y
Cinfhen Oh yes @Weaponxgirl the backlash against Miley was deeply troubling. All of this was prior to #MeToo so I wonder what would be different now 6y
Weaponxgirl @laurenashley I also always have slightly more tolerance to these kids bought up in a really unnatural way in the limelight. I wonder how they manage to get any chance of being well rounded and it's sucks that their rebellious stage is showcased to all. @Cinfhen yes, I wonder how that would affect how it's portrayed too. I found the first half of the book to be a slow-read but from the middle to the end it was a unputdownable page-turner. I did not see the twist at the end and it was a definite surprise and made up for the slow beginning. I would recommend this book to those who like psychological thrillers about lies and relationships.

BookArt Will it make me relationship shy? Cause I really don't need more of that. Thanks! 6y

EadieB @KathyWheeler Too much stupid info in the beginning. I just wanted the plot to move. Pickpick

This novel is clever. The characters beautifully drawn and the pace masterful. Erin Kelly deserves every accolade she gets for this original novel. Brilliant! (Yet again Ms Kelly owes me a night's sleep! 😉)
