The Twelve (Book Two of The Passage Trilogy)
The Twelve (Book Two of The Passage Trilogy): A Novel (Book Two of The Passage Trilogy) | Justin Cronin
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Look for a special preview of Justin Cronins The City of Mirrors in the back of the book. The end of the world was only the beginning. In his internationally bestselling and critically acclaimed novel The Passage, Justin Cronin constructed an unforgettable world transformed by a government experiment gone horribly wrong. Now the scope widens and the intensity deepens as the epic story surges forward with . . . THE TWELVE In the present day, as the man-made apocalypse unfolds, three strangers navigate the chaos. Lila, a doctor and an expectant mother, is so shattered by the spread of violence and infection that she continues to plan for her childs arrival even as society dissolves around her. Kittridge, known to the world as Last Stand in Denver, has been forced to flee his stronghold and is now on the road, dodging the infected, armed but alone and well aware that a tank of gas will get him only so far. April is a teenager fighting to guide her little brother safely through a landscape of death and ruin. These three will learn that they have not been fully abandonedand that in connection lies hope, even on the darkest of nights. One hundred years in the future, Amy and the others fight on for humankinds salvation . . . unaware that the rules have changed. The enemy has evolved, and a dark new order has arisen with a vision of the future infinitely more horrifying than mans extinction. If the Twelve are to fall, one of those united to vanquish them will have to pay the ultimate price. A heart-stopping thriller rendered with masterful literary skill, The Twelve is a grand and gripping tale of sacrifice and survival. I wanted so much to love this series. After 2 books, I'm not sure I'm gonna attempt book 3. It seems like something right up my alley, but for some reason I just can't get into it. This one was so bleak, and I had trouble following the multiple threads going on. Probably a me thing, but idk.

bthegood I read this series several years ago and loved it, after this last year I don't think I'd enjoy it as much.📚 3y

Absolutely fantastic!
This second book of a trilogy follows a similar structure to the first. We begin at the early days of the apocalypse following a new group of characters as they negotiate their survival. Then we flash forward seventy years to an important and traumatic event. All these threads come together and inform the epic second episode in the struggle of our main characters‘ battle for Humanity‘s future. Must read!

The second book in a trilogy, this story goes back and forth in time, to around the beginning of book one right through to a few years (I think) after that one ends. We see lots of familiar faces and are introduced to a bunch more. To be honest there are so many characters it was quite hard to keep up with them all...I actually had to look up the character list a few times! That being said the story is exciting and I loved every second! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I was really hoping to finish the tagged book in February but, with over 5 hours left in the audiobook, it isn‘t looking good. Damn you short month!! So here‘s my finished #bookspinbingo board for February, which, while not getting me a bingo does have my #doublebookspin marked off! I read half as many book this month as in January but I‘m hoping to step it up in March. Still way ahead of my Goodreads reading goal schedule for the year!

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Fantastic month!!! 4y

1) The tagged audiobook, Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth, and Things in Jars by Jess Kidd.
2) Three-way tie between The Passage by Justin Cronin, Darling Rose Gold by Stephanie Wrobel, and Recipe for a Perfect Wife by Karma Brown.
3) Not sure if Jack Ryan and Castle Rock count since they‘re not based on actual novels? Could be considered “book adjacent”?

Reagan I like book adjacent. I might use that.

Enjoyed it. Took me longer than I wanted to read but that was myself being tired after work and not the book (not easy sometimes to pick up a book after being up since 4 am). Ready for the final book to be available for pick up at my library.

Thanks so much @mitch for the #completetheseries giveaway and congrats on your milestone!

There are 3 series I would like to work on completing this year. I very much want to read The Twelve, which is the second of The Passage Trilogy. Also on my list is Iron Gold, book 4 of the Red Rising series. Last on my list is A God in Ruins, the sequel to Life After Life.

So many series, so little time!

Mitch I hear you! I‘ve just started watching The Passage on TV..have you seen it? 6y
Ingerella @Mitch I started it but liked the book so much better I stopped watching it. It takes A LOT for a TV show to hold my attention these days and even this one wasn't able to do it. I hope you enjoy it! 6y

Stayed up way too late to finish this book, but it was well worth it. While there were weak points in this book (too many POV characters), I really enjoyed how this book expanded the story and connected some unexpected plot lines. Getting to read the story of the “Last Stand in Denver” (only referenced in book 1) and see Amy‘s development was especially satisfying. Now onto the 3rd and final installment, which I picked up at the library yesterday!

TheBookKeepers The multiple POV stressed me out lol but I still enjoyed the series! I always said it‘d make a perfect tv series tho bc of that! And babaamm, I think season 1 just started airing! Lol 6y
Kimberlone @TheBookKeepers my problem with multiple POVs is I always just want the story to get back to my favorite characters! 6y

Reggie I read this a couple of years ago and never read the 3rd one but I do remember crying at work because of what happens to the guy from Denver and the little brother, having his storyline from Afghanistan come full circle. Ughh. Also, the guy who drives the bus, I remember his story. I loved the first halves of the first 2 books. It was the future where he lost me. Good luck with the 3rd!! 6y
Kimberlone @Reggie no shame I teared up so many times during this book! 6y
TrishB @Reggie I liked the 3rd best! The ending is just right. 6y

I can‘t believe that I am loving this series as this is totally out of my wheelhouse. I loved The Passage and thought this was just as good, catching up with characters from the last book while meeting some new ones. It was a few months since I had read The Passage so I needed to refer back to it a bit. I think I may jump right into City of Mirrors soon so I don‘t lose my momentum.

A continuation of Amy‘s story, and all of the survivors of the viral outbreak. We get a glimpse at some of the characters‘ history, which all comes into play by the end. Looking forward to finally getting the third book and finishing this story.

So I forgot to post about these! I‘m finally getting around to finishing up the last book in this series, which means a reread of the first 2 since I remember next to nothing about them. Over halfway through the 2nd one and then I‘ll have to wait for the 3rd to come in at the library. So good, just as good as I remembered them being.

#agameoffavorites day 4, local author! While not native to Houston, he's called Houston home now for over a decade. His Passage trilogy is one of my favorites, but The Twelve is my favorite book from the series. He's stated that his most influential books, and some of his favorite, are Lonsome Dove and 1984. I also love 1984!

@ErinSueG @WhiskeyMistress

Guildedearlobe The books were amazing. A bit skeptical if they can pull off the tv series but we‘ll see. 6y
madamereadsalot1 @trioxin_sematary they're some of the most well crafted books I've had the privilege to read! They're only second best dystopian, after Maddaddam trilogy! 6y

madamereadsalot1 @Guildedearlobe I am terrified by the prospect of the TV show, but also excited. And I'm equal parts horrified and intrigued by Zach Morris being Wolgast. 😆 6y
Vansa I LOVED this series but I'm very very apprehensive about the t.v. series- the trailer looks very strange, they've removed Alicia's character - really not sure about this! 6y
madamereadsalot1 @Vansa I'm positive that I'm going to hate it. But I always cross my fingers and hold my breath that maybe it won't be so bad, when an adaptation is done. 🤷 6y

This was a great read, especially if you‘re into post-apocalyptic stories. It‘s not zombies in this story, though, that brings about the downfall of civilization as we know it. It‘s vampires this time around, but still just as deadly. I saw a similarity to the trajectory of The Walking Dead in this installment in the trilogy. The focus is more on the dangers of dealing with other people rather than the vampires. Highly recommended!!

Yes, I‘m definitely going to have a book hangover from this one. Wow.

If you‘re into long series (well, trilogies) and post apocalyptic vampires sound fun to you, and you enjoy some kind of brutal gore and deep character development, get your hands on The Passage and get started on these now!

I need a little break, but I‘m glad City of Mirrors is on my shelf! Soon I‘ll see you again my friends!

Soubhiville Alicia- “say her name!” Ugh, yeah! That was amazing! 7y
PNWBookseller85 Loved this series. Wish I had been able to read them back to back. I read them as they came out. I‘ll have to revisit them someday. 7y
intothehallofbooks I‘ve been seriously thinking about starting this series soon! I‘ve been wanting a long series plus I‘ve been wanting to read vampire stories lately (😳😜). Sounds like this may be the series for me. (edited) 7y
Bookzombie I‘m going to finish this trilogy this year. I read The Passage when it first came out, but haven‘t read the last two yet. May have to do a reread of The Passage on audio as a refresher. 7y
Hooked_on_books I read The Passage shortly after it came out and LOVED it. I was actually mildly disappointed by The Twelve. I think City Of Mirrors was a solid ending to the series. It‘s a little different than the other two and some didn‘t like it, but it worked for me. 7y

My snow day plans! Took Sietje out for her first snow experience, and she did not enjoy it. That‘s ok with me! Let‘s enjoy it from inside, wrapped in blankets, with a scary book!

For those who‘ve read this, how would you categorize it? At first I thought sci-fi/fantasy, but now I‘m leaning more towards horror. Or has post apocalyptic become it‘s own category? I‘m just not sure. Whatever it is, I sure do love it!
