Despite the grumpy, rude, bitter protagonist, this is a suspenseful and interesting crime thriller. I plan to read more of this series.

I love the Department Q series from this Danish author. More Scandinavian crime! Each book is always better than the last. Anyway, this first in the series ebook is on sale for $1.99!

This Danish police procedural has a good plot and fun story, but I have a real issue with books that portray women so poorly. The women here are all one-note and portrayed as either crazy, in need of rescue, or sexualized. Plus, there‘s a Muslim character who is portrayed a bit problematically as well, so I just can‘t recommend this one.

vivastory Agreed. I was disappointed by this one for the same reasons 3y
Hooked_on_books @vivastory My mom recommended this to me and I gave her my honest feedback. She tried to argue with me about how the women are portrayed. I think it‘s more that she‘s bothered that I didn‘t love a book she suggested than anything else. Oops! 3y
vivastory That might be it. It's always a gamble recommending books to people. It's strange because it was published in 2007 but the attitudes read like something you'd encounter in some books from the 80s. I know it's a beloved series but the little Scandinavian Noir that I've read is much better. 3y
SamAnne I agree with this review. I gave it a thumbs up, but I went in with medium expectations. I am going to read the next in the series, The Absent One, because I'm told it gets better. I was most bothered by the portrayal of the Muslim character. 3y

Maybe not a 4 star read but a solid 3.5 Nordic noir thriller. It sucked me in. Mixed feelings about the portrayal of the Syrian sidekick, although he turns out to be a badass. Hope his character gets more developed in the next book in the series. Now I will watch the Netflix Dept. Q film!

I‘ve been diving into Nordic Noir and am loving this first book in the Dept. Q series! I‘d already put this author on my list and then my Danish friend and member of my book club recommended it for a group read.

Hooked_on_books My mom finished this book the other day and recommended it to me. Looks like I definitely need to read it! 4y

I‘ve been wanting to do the #seriesread2021 this year but I‘ve been struggling with getting back into reading mode much less identifying which series I want to finish. I have so many and the vast majority are unfinished. Today I listed the series from my bookshelf with favorite books. So it‘s missing all my other series on all my other shelves, my ebook series, and my audible series. Hoping listing them will strike a chord to help me pick. ⬇️

Texreader The tagged book is the first book in the first series listed. 4y

I finished this a few days ago. So I guess it's my last book of 2020. I definitely did not need to start another series but I'm totally hooked. This is Nordic Noir set in Denmark. Carl was involved in a police shooting and ends up as head of a new cold case department. The first case is a member of parliament that vanished off a ferry in the Baltic 5 years previously. It is also told from her perspective. It's very good.

A new (to me) Nordic crime series and it did not disappoint. Not as fast-paced as some of the other series (i.e., Lars Kepler) but a great detective story. I really enjoyed the back and forth time lines and Merete's point of view was so well done. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Not sure what to say about this book.Created feelings of gnawing anxiety & dread, yet I read it compulsively.Chilling, full of twists, confrontation of pathological evil- I usually want to escape this reality. But the book‘s eclectic, idiosyncratic, characters, its humorous overtones, its complicated plot, its politics-kept me submerged in its pages.Maybe the contrast of my work(teaching)grounded me?This choice was a stretch for me.I am glad I read it.

Nothing too creepy, intense, etc. Looking forward to my son‘s reading of Sherlock today. Maybe that‘s enough. Just have not been in this place for ages. 😕

Overall an enjoyable book but not the smoothest translation and therefore not the easiest or quickest read. Enjoyed the interactions between the two lead investigators. Second half better than first half. Hopefully series will improve. Onto book 2 next month.

Copenhagen's PD created a new department called Q in the basement of their building. Carl Morck, a flawed policeman and Assad, immigrant, menial work but intelligence very helpful to Carl. one cold case for Carl. It is a liberal woman politician who has been missing for 5 years. interesting plot but slow moving. very wordy needs better dialogue. Carl and Assad unique. switched to the audio version. I will continue series. recommend 3.5 stars

It may just be me but struggling to get through this book. Currently on 56%. It just feels to be moving quite slowly and not a lot going on. Think the interactions between characters need to be better, a bit more action and some better dialogue sections.

Will get to the questions when I do manage to get through the rest of the book.

EadieB @Andrew65 I had the same experience. It took me forever but then found the audio in order to finish it. Just found it very wordy and slow moving. 5y

Andrew65 @EadieB Pleased to hear it is not just me. Just feel more pace, action and dialogue is needed. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree! The story was good but dragged while reading it. Maybe a translation problem. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s possible. I don‘t feel particularly engaged with the characters. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Agree! The characters didn‘t seem to be individuals. They all seemed rather stilted. I just was wondering how others seemed to be reading it very quickly and it seemed to take 3 days for me to get to 75%. Even with the audio it seemed like too much info. I was saying “Come on just get to the end!” 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB You did well. Taken me three days so far to get to 56% and stalled, not ideal reading after a busy day at work! I do wonder how others said it was a quick read. 5 1/2 hours reading to get to 56%. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Audio is best for this book. I was only averaging 20 pages an hour as I was falling asleep if I wasn‘t sitting up in a chair. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I can certainly relate to this! 💤 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 & @EadieB I‘m really surprised that you guys didn‘t love this, but I understand. My memory of it is that the first quarter of the book seemed a bit slow, mainly because he had to establish a pretty complicated backstory. But I (and my mother) absolutely loved the dialogue between Carl & Assad. I‘m so sorry you guys didn‘t love this, & I fear it doesn‘t bode well for the rest of the books in the series, alas. 😐 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat The dialogue between Assad and Carl is about the best part of the book. Sometimes books get better as series progresses after setting the scene. I will be completing it. 5y
EadieB @gradcat I did enjoy the book and the relationship between Carl and Assad. The book was just a very long read for me which I feel could have been accomplished with a faster paced book with more dialogue. I‘m looking forward to the next book and will definitely seek out the audio version. 5y
Tove_Reads It took too long to get it all set up in the beginning with all the explanations and whatnot. I guess cold cases in principle should start off a bit slowly. Read it in Swedish (couldn‘t get it in Danish), so it‘s not really translated in the sense that it‘s almost the same language. Also, sometimes Nordic authors can be weird to non-Nordics I‘ve seen. 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 @EadieB I will be interested to see what you guys think of the next one. I hope you like it better than this one. ♥️♥️♥️ 5y
MrBook Huh. No shame in dnf-ing it. 👍🏻👍🏻 5y
Andrew65 @MrBook I know but I struggle to DNF, I keep hoping and expecting it to get better. Definitely one of my failings. 😂 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I had no problem with this one, but the ice princess is not as good, imo, I'm halfway through so I'll definitely finish it, but it's not keeping my attention 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Strange how we can act differently to books. Sometimes I wonder if it is our mood at the Time? 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 that must be it, since I seem to not be able to engage right now. Last week everything I picked up I enjoyed, this week I'm just like NAH doesn't really interest me, lol. I need to shake it off, as my reading has slowed down. Maybe need to get off Litsy!😉 5y
Tove_Reads Still not done? 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads No saving it for the weekend, too tired after school to read this one, gone for something lighter after school each night. 5y
Tove_Reads Are you giving up? You looked so much forward to reading this series. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I have now finished!!! 👏👏👏🤗 And certainly not giving up. Always give a series at least two books. Now overall I enjoyed it and the second half was better than the first half, the writing style isn‘t the easiest, possibly a translation issue. Will be interested to see how I is taken forward in the next book. I did like the ending of this one. Now I need to get to the questions. Not helped by a VERY busy time at work. 5y
Andrew65 Now I need to read The Hypnotist! That looks like another long book. @EadieB @gradcat @Crazeedi @Tove_Reads @MrBook @AnneCecilie @eanderson @Marina_h 👆 (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes! Good luck with The Hypnotist - bad language and drawn out will not help. Here‘s hoping the 2nd book will better. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes seen those comments. I‘m wondering if I need to choose the audiobook route. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I did audio and it‘s 17 hours and 24 minutes long. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB That shows how long the book is! 😳 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Right! Doesn‘t need to be that long. Audio is easier as you can just listen and reading is more effort. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Definitely is and tiredness issues at the moment. Need to read this before the next Librarything Group Read. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Good idea! I‘m glad I finished. Didn‘t think I was going to make it to the end. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB 🤞🤞🤞 Not an author I was aware of before the buddy read. I knew Jussi Adler-Olsen and Camilla Lackberg but not him. (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I had one of their books. I‘m thinking the problem with these books has got to be the translator using more words than necessary maybe afraid the meaning in not coming across clear enough. Lars Kepler - It is a husband and wife team. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Shows how much I know. They should speak to Stephen Sartarelli, he does a brilliant job with the Camilleri translations. @gradcat @Crazeedi 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 sartarelli is the BEST!! I've had his voice in my head while reading, listened to 17 with him, then read 6 physical books with him narrating. I love how he does Catarella a mong other voices 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I meant with him narrating in my head! See above comment 5y
gradcat @andrew65 @crazeedi @Tove_Reads @EadieB Maybe it‘s easier to translate the Romance languages? I think Scandinavian and Germanic languages have different sentence structures, so maybe it‘s much harder to make it work in English—just a thought.... 🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat I couldn‘t get hold of Cussler‘s Sahara in English back in the days. I got the Swedish one. It was terrible, could not read it. I then found the Finnish one and it was excellent. Translators have a lot of power! 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat I will have to rely on your judgement here as little knowledge over than some French of other languages. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads So often translators can let an author down, but Sartarelli does a brilliant job with the Montalbano books, you wouldn‘t even know they are translated. 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Totally agree. 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads What you‘re saying surely illustrates how much is laid on a translator‘s shoulders...who would‘ve thought that it would make such a huge difference to read the same book in Swedish & Finnish!?! @Andrew65 5y

The police department in Denmark is forced to establish a new department after a political agreement, Department Q that will handle cold cases of a severe character. To solve internal difficulties within the Copenhagen police department they appoint Carl Mørck as its leader. He in return demands an assistant, and gets Assad. By chance, they start to look into a case where a young female politician disappeared 5yrs ago.

Crazeedi I love the characterization of cranky Mork, and I love Assad! Their blossoming relationship is hilarious! 5y
EadieB It was amazing how much Carl and Assad found out about Merete. I loved that Carl questioned Borge Bak about not writng any information down during Bak's investigation of Merete's disappearance. Doesn't sound like Bak tried too hard to find Merete. 5y
Tove_Reads The job was done poorly in the beginning. Sounds strange since she was an MP. I guess the lack of ransom or any messages made them sure she was a goner. I‘m sure we‘re through with her, but I would actually like to see her becoming some sort of an asset. The characters in the book are excellent! 5y

EadieB I could not imagine that and the fact that she did survive in the end. I blame Bak for not working harder to find Merete. 5y
Marina_h I have a hard time imagining I could do that myself. I think I would have given up long ago. But maybe some hidden strength helps you. 5y
Tove_Reads There are many true stories about people being kept like this for years, but I wonder how many can take it physically. The woman couldn‘t wash herself for 5 years. That alone could cause all sorts of things. She was able to handle it quite well mentally. 5y

Marina_h Børge Back and Lars Bjørn are my least favorites. They seem corrupt and dishonest. I sort of like Marcus. He also seems like a good guy and he does a lot to help Carl even though Carl makes it difficult. But I don't feel like a know all of the characters that well yet 5y
Tove_Reads @Marina_h I also dislike those two. I have a weird liking for the secretary women. I hope they will have bigger parts in the future. 5y
AnneCecilie I find his ex-wife/ wife annoying. And I don‘t like Bak, I find it hard that an investigator with his reputation hasn‘t taken all the notes. 5y
Marina_h @AnneCecilie yes his ex-wife is very annoying. And I'm wondering why Carl puts up with her. 5y
Tove_Reads I guess he has to put up with his ex because he has her kid. 5y
AnneCecilie @Marina_h Maybe he has som redeeming qualities after all? Letting her kid stay at his place and having to deal with her 5y
Marina_h @Tove_Reads yeah, but that's also a bit strange, that her son lives with Carl. But maybe that's one if the things that shows he really is a good guy. Tove_Reads I think he might be something like a police/army guy from Iraq. He must have an agenda wanting to work for the police. 5y

EadieB Carl was very interesting but very intense. I like how he carries out an idea and immediately goes out and interviews the people who were mentioned. 5y
Crazeedi Love Carl , he's a curmudgeon, he doesn't care what people think of him. At times his rudeness is a bit much, but you can also see his softness at times 5y

I finally got to start Mercy (also published as The Keeper of Lost Causes) for #NordicNoir, this is the first book in the Department Q Series.

I‘m multitasking with this book as it will also be my second country visited in the #ReadingEurope2020 (#Denmark), The one word book title for January‘s #ReadwithMrBook #OneWordTitle and the first of three books by the same author for the #MMDChallenge.

Tove_Reads I keep on missing all these challenges and when I look them up it‘s almost impossible to find what they are about, because there are so many posts. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Yes you do have to search down quite a way on some! 5y
Tove_Reads I‘m adding one more for us two, but just as a fun sidestep one - 100 books with at least one murder. Basically we just need to do some adding. So far 4 books - 4 with murders. I‘d just like to see how much we read about murder. Maybe @EadieB would like to join? 5y

Maybe @TrishB @gradcat @Crazeedi @AnnCecilie @eanderson @Marina_h would like to join us well? Doesn‘t have to be a 100, just add a book every time there‘s a murder, like 2/3, 10/13, 67/100, whatever numbers you are at 😃 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads We should call it #Murder2020. 5y

Book 1 in Dept Q series. Carl Mork is a different type of detective, marches to his own drummer. Assad, his assistant, is a quirky type too, they fit for some reason. Mork is in charge of a 5 year old cold case. Where is the womans body? Lots of twists in the case. 4🌟

I enjoyed the first book in this series. Carl Mørck is some guy. He is now leading the new Department Q, handling cold cases, with one of the most special “Assistants”, Assad. It moves slower than the general detective stories, as it should, due to its nature. MP Merete is believed to have drowned five years back, but is it really the truth? It‘s time to find out! I love the strange characters in the book, and want to get to know them! #nordicnoir

Tove_Reads Will post the questions for our #buddyread discussion on Sunday. Hope you‘ll all enjoying the book! 5y

We start reading three #nordicnoir series as #buddyreads in January. The first week of the month it‘s time to read Jussi Adler Olsen and the first book in the Department Q series. Everyone reads the books at their own pace. On Sundays I‘ll post a few questions regarding the book we‘ve just read, and everyone can take part in these discussions. Sounds OK to you?

Marina_h I just need to find the book at home then I'm all set. Looking forward to reading with you guys 😊 5y
AnneCecilie Sounds great. I have the book out from the library. 5y

EadieB @Chrissyreadit I have 800 credits! 5y
Chrissyreadit OMG!!! That‘s no joke! My birthdays in August! But I may stalk you until then! You should do some swaps!!!! What is your latest true crime recommendation? 5y
EadieB @Chrissyreadit So, when you find a book that you want, I‘ll check and see if they have it and have it sent to you. I just got this for $1.00 at my library sale: (edited) 5y
Chrissyreadit Wow! That sounds good- and also terrifying as we are exploring colleges... 5y
EadieB @Chrissyreadit My daughter went to Penn State and was on campus when there was a shooter one day. That was scary! 5y
Chrissyreadit OMG!! Did she like Penn State though? 5y
EadieB @Chrissyreadit She did her first two years at Allentown College which is very close to our house. Then she said we wanted to transfer to Penn State main campus. She had roommate problems and wished she was closer to home. The smaller college suited her needs better. 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB thank you sooooo much! My son in laws cabin is 20 minutes from main campus!! 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi Nice area near State College! 5y

The slow pace of the plot bugged me. A lot. Carl is not a likeable character. Few characters are in this thriller. I kept on reading, a reader I trust wrote a good review, so I persisted. I am glad I did. At around 2/3 the plot picked up, the action got into high gear. The writer does thriller really well, mystery, not so well. #summerreading #readinginFrenchJuly

New summer nails. I just love them. As much As I like the idea of a cold case squad, this cop is an a-hole, sexist and a tad racist. I'm a little pass 50% and I know who did it and why, and I didn't cheat. All that I have left to keep me reading is I want know if she gets out and gets revenge. Still new nails and new books arrived in the mail today. #bookhaul

Finally getting into the last book in this round of our #teaswap I haven‘t read any of the Nordic mysteries that have become so popular, so I‘m interested to give this a go. Also what‘s the Glass Key awarded for?

Okay Littens, a friend of mine, who's bookish but not crazy bookish, keeps raving about the first Jussi Adler-Olsen book. Actually, she keeps saying I absolutely have to read it.

I'm hesitant, as you might have guessed. I am not really into Scandinavian crime/thriller books, and I have tried a few. It's the slow pace that mostly annoys me.

Soooo, the question is, should I or should I not try it?

TEArificbooks I liked the book. And if you try her recommendation maybe she will try one of yours. 6y
DGRachel It‘s still on my TBR, so I can‘t give a recommendation. Sorry! 6y
Sarah83 My mum just started this series. The first thirty pages weren't that great, but it got better and now she flying through it. If you like books, where a crime is solved and detectives talk to a lot of people to find out, what happen, it might be a good decision to start it. ☺️ 6y

Robothugs I‘ve never read it. But I‘d say if you‘ve already read some and don‘t like them, then maybe go with your gut. It seems like it‘s compared to Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, if you‘ve read that and didn‘t like it... 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
Kaye I‘d be honest and say you don‘t really like those types of books. It‘d save you the grief later if you read it and hate it. That way you won‘t be under any obligations. Just my 2 cents. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan Sometimes I read something I‘m not sure about because someone I really care about recommends it. As long as it‘s not horror, I‘m going to take a look and if it‘s doable I try because I like knowing what my friends like and I like having something we can talk about. If you were to read this book, you would then know even better what your friend likes and could then maybe make some informed recommendations of your own. 6y
hilded I enjoyed this series, and the first book was terrific:) I found the characters in departement Q to be quite interesring as well. On the other hand though, I enjoy these kinds of books as a palate cleanser in between other heavy books, so if you already know you don't like the genre, it might not be worth it. This book is also a movie. 6y
RebelReader We can‘t all like the same books. I‘d be honest and let her know that you already have so many books on your TBR and while you‘re happy she loved it, it‘s not the right time for you to tackle it right now. 6y
Mitch I‘ve enjoyed this series ( do not watch the films, they‘re not a patch on the books!). They‘re good page turners with some great settings and memorable characters. However - life is not long enough to read everything! 6y
julesG @mdm139 It's not that I don't appreciate her recommendation. I've already read three books she recommended to me. Unfortunately, they were all in the Pan and Bail category, although they were within my comfort zone. I've told her that I've struggled with Scandinavian authors before - it all started with the Sophie's World craze 20 odd years ago. 6y
julesG @DGRachel Thanks anyway. 😘 6y
julesG @Sarah83 Thanks. Loads of people like it. Another friend just started it on Spotify. Maybe I should put my 99 cent premium membership to good use before it expires. 6y
julesG @Robothugs Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I started it, then one of my students did a book presentation on the trilogy/series and I knew how it ended. So I bailed. 6y
julesG @Kaye Already told her I'm not very much into Scandinavian crime, but she keeps insisting. 😵 I'll probably end up humouring her anyway. 6y
julesG @jpmcwisemorgan See, that's exactly what I do. I listen to friends' recommendations and give it a try. It's just that this particular friend has recommended books to me before, which were within my comfort zone, but were not for me. Hence the hesitation. 6y
julesG @hilded It's not the genre. It's the Scandinavian style I struggle with. 😉 6y
julesG @hilded And that's me saying it although I love Scandinavia and the Scandinavian people so much. It's just the convoluted, round about writing I struggle with. 6y
julesG @RebelReader Oh, don't mention #MountTBR. 😁 Thank you, it's a valid point though. 6y
julesG @Mitch Thank you. How much blood is there in those books? When it comes to crime novels, I'm a 'hold the book by its spine and let the blood drip out' sort of person, the more, the better. 6y
Mitch @julesG they‘re not bloody really.... 6y
hilded I see! I guess I'm so used to it, I don't even notice ;) And I quite enjoy the sparse prose you often find in Scandinavian literature. If you want bloody crime novels, give Kepler (Sweden) a try. But then again, still Nordic Noir 🙈). Although I find the Department Q series to be much better than the Kepler series. 6y
julesG @hilded Thanks for the recommendation. I'm adding it to my TBR. I've found the Adler-Olsen on Spotify, so I'll give it a go. 6y
julesG @Mitch Shame.😉 6y
jpmcwisemorgan Hmmm...well, if you‘ve read recommendations from this friend before then you‘ve really done your friend duty. 😊 6y
CouronneDhiver I never end up enjoying something I‘ve been “forced” into... I say thank him/her for the recommendation but explain that the genre isn‘t really your thing. Maybe there‘s another book/author that you two can agree upon instead 6y
minkyb I read a lot in this genre. I discovered dept. Q when we traveled to Denmark and I like reading books set in my travels. Turns out Carl‘s police station was cited near our hotel. Carl and the cast of characters is not typical for other Scandinavian authors I read so perhaps you will like it. If you try and decide to bail I am sure your friend will appreciate your effort! I would. 🤗 6y
julesG @CouronneDhiver @minkyb Thank you. I'm glad I told her up front that I might not like it. I'm 17 chapters in (audiobook on Spotify) and am neither invested in the MC nor the potential victim of the story. 6y
Moony Oh I love the Audiobooks! It's a good choice. 6y
Meeko93 I would try it and if it doesn't work for ya after the first 100 pages then I'd bail. 6y
julesG @Moony @Meeko93 - I've listened to 17 chapters. I'm not sure how many pages that is. It's meh! I'll bail. 6y
minkyb On to the next book! 6y
RaimeyGallant I'd be on the fence. 6y
