#CuriousCovers Day 13: Man
I‘ve only read this once, back in 11th grade American literature. Not my favorite Hemingway novel, either, but it deserves its accolades. I should probably revisit this one sometime now that I am older.
3 summers ago, we took a cruise to Cuba. Not far from the port, we stumbled across an outdoor book market. This copy of The Old Man And The Sea is one of my favorite travel souvenirs. 🚢 🇨🇺 📚
Pleasantly surprised. I finished it in one day.
I‘ve had this book since 1991, end of fourth grade, when my teacher was doling out most of her book collection to her students (my mom told me later she was going through a nasty divorce and was returning stateside after the school year ended). Tried and failed before, but it‘s been calling to me recently. Glad I listened. Sneaked in under the 30-year mark!
What book has been on your TBR longest?
November's pick for our Tequila Mockingbird book club and as I've been rereading this I'm pleasantly surprised that I'm actually enjoying it this time.

How did you choose this book: This book was recommended by one of my friends, and they said that the author is good at writing.
Summary: This book is about an old man who set out to the seas and for 84 days he comes home empty handed. On the 85th day, his bad luck ended as a big fish was caught but he cannot pull it in. Instead, the fish begins to pull the boat.
A gift to myself - a 1st Edition later printing of one of the first “grown up” books I read as a kid. Adding it to my Hemingway shelf.
I‘m not reading The Old Man and the Sea; I read it years ago. I just wanted to show y‘all our OMatS sculpture on campus. I pass it a lot on my walks. #bookfitnesschallenge #bfcr3 walk =2.1 miles
July 2019 at the beach in OC, MD: Great book to read at the ocean 😄. I was first disappointed when I realized the whole book was around one single action that in reality does not interest me at all but then I concentrated on the main character instead of “the action“ and saw how there was deeper stuff to look at. A book about resilience to me.
Happy birthday to Ernest Hemingway. That copy of THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA without the dust jacket on my shelf? It‘s my late mother‘s first edition. As a boy, I drew a shark in the water and the starship Enterprise in the sky.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Just finished this masterpiece. Each and every word is where it should be, each word has purpose and meaning. Also, terrible feeling of melancholy in the last pages of the book.
You can pick this up and finish reading it within the span of one afternoon in the coffee shop. Then, you can go home and finish thinking** about it over the next 5 years.
Read on a stormy morning, perfect for one sitting. Hemingway remains one of my favorite authors for his poignant characters and psychology. If he includes a detail, it's both important and beautiful.
#BookNDinner! Accompaniment this warm and clear evening: angel hair pasta with white clam sauce; cheesy garlic bread; and Stewart‘s birch beer. MMMmmm 😋! This has been another presentation of: #MrBookKitchen. Happy reads & happy eats! 😎👌🏻
#BookNDinner! Accompaniment this warm and sunny evening: chicken breast strips, bella mushrooms, sliced carrots, and green beans, sautéed in extra virgin olive oil and a variety of seasonings; shaved parmesan and asiago cheeses, and small mozzarella balls; and sparkling mineral water. MMMmmm ?! This has been another presentation of: #MrBookKitchen. Happy reads & happy eats! ???
Weekend reading! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The tagged book will be a re-read, which I last read a couple decades ago.
Have you read any of these?!
I know this is a "beloved classic" but honestly, I was pretty bored most of the time. I felt bad for the old man and his unluckiness, and his diametric love for and drive to kill the fish was interesting, but the fish chase drug on sooooooo long. I'm glad the old man held on to hope and kept fighting. I actually would have preferred to hear more of the old man and the boy's relationship, and less of his solitary hunt. Oh well.
Starting my Saturday with a little coffee and a little Hemingway. My kinda morning!! 📖☕️🌥
First Hemingway since high school. Visceral and entertaining: I thought this would be more of a philosophical exercise, rather than an adventure story. There's something especially thrilling about action and drama on the sea- parts of this reminded me of the great moments in Moby Dick. Some misogynist moments when the wildness of sea creatures are given feminine comparisons. Too bad Hemingway had this gender bias- definitely limits his legacy.

My first time venturing into Hemingway. I love a good cover.
"A man can be destroyed but not defeated.". Such an ode to nature (human and otherwise).
I am so weak.Such a sucker for good books and good snuggles!
I hope everyone in the path of Irma, Harvey, Jose, and Katia are all keeping safe. 💕
I thought this was a bit of good news this morning.

Too obvious?
A story that wasn't ruined for me by required reading in school... I first read this in a college class my freshman year and loved it enough that I've kept my old copy.

this book was...okay?? I mean, it was really drawn out but overall, I actually kinda enjoyed it. Hemingway's writing style pleases me I suppose. 3\u005 stars.

Short but powerful! I will most definitely read more Hemingway.
I've never read Hemingway! I must admit it started out weirdly, with almost childish writing, but now I'm halfway done and I'm hooked 🤓🌊🐟🎣
