Quite different from The Giver. But still a not quite normal place. I feel like there is so much more behind the curtain of the dysfunction…

I quite liked this as a stand alone book. It's been maybe 10 years since I read The Giver. I assume this is the same universe, which is good for me. It was short and got to the point. I love Matt. Such a nice and thoughtful kid. I liked the ending.

I loved the Giver in HS. Only recently did I find out there were more books to this quartet. This book is not a sequel, but a continuation of a theme. In this world, the people of this place do not care for others. They steal and argue. This notion of taking other‘s creativity as their own, under their control, was a hard hitting theme. I do wish there was more describing the village, though, as this story was more character based.

This was a wonderful companion to The Giver. I believe it takes place at the same time, just in a different village. The vibe here is so different than that of Jonas‘ home. The people basically live without technology in a dystopian society. We follow the disabled, orphan Kira as she learns to sew and dye threads into beautiful colors and patterns. All colors except blue…

Rereading the Giver quartet. Kira is such a wonderful character, and I'm looking forward to rereading the final two books where the storylines all come together.

A pretty interesting follow up to The Giver. Kira should have been "taken to the field" when she was born because of her deformed leg, but her mother saves her. Kira develops a skill for sewing and, after her mother's death, she becomes responsible for repairing a ceremonial robe. Good buildup and reveals. The ending was good. It felt a little rushed and open ended, but not much different from the Giver, just not as impactful IMO.

After re-reading The Giver for my church book club, I decided I should finally read the rest of the series. We are all curious about what happened to Jonas & Gabriel. This is Kira‘s story—she lives in a primitive society where everyone is hunting/gathering. She gets picked to live an easier life because of her gift of sewing & dyeing colors. She finally realizes the evil of certain people in her society & plans to help fix it.

“Take pride in your pain," her mother had always told her. "You are stronger than those who have none.”

I really liked this book. I like The Giver so I was sure I would. Apparently there are more that look at some of these characters too? Im gonna need to read those too.

Book 96🎧
A beautifully told story about a girl and a haunting society where secrets lurk just beyond the tree line. Her hope for a better future and peace among all is inspiring.
There is work to be done💙
Not bad sequel. There must be more coming since the ending seems unresolved.

I began reading this sequel to the Giver, which I read several years ago.

Book 75

“To sadden. To bloom. To bleed. What a strange set of words.”

20 years after reading the first book, I have just finished the second and I am starting the third tonight. I really enjoyed this book but I was a little disappointed with the end of this book much like I was when I read The Giver in the 7th grade.
To the people who have read the book Gathering blue @SpotlightBookBlog @Johanna414 @hdhubbard don't you think that when Matt takes Kira to the side and says that she can marry a boy with blue eyes who lives there. Don't you think that the boy is Jonas from The giver (First book in the Quartet)?
Reply in the comments plz! I am eager to know your opinions! 😊👇
AWESOME 2nd book in the series but based on 2 different characters but I can kind of see it coming together.

1. Yep, I've read a series and it called The land of stories I've read many more, such as, Harry Potter, Pages & Co and many more.
2. It should be interesting, it should make sense, it should have the following, Setting, Mood, Inciting Incident(s), Conflict, Rising Action, Climax and Resolution. For it to be a proper book it needs to have good Spelling, Good Sentence Structure, good grammar, Paragraphs, and Appropriate Terminology.
3. IDK

I loved this world and following the journey of Kira the orphan girl as she discovers her special talents - if anything I was sad when it ended because I wanted more details. It was very enjoyable but there were hints of a cruel and dark element to the community which wasn‘t fully exposed. Perhaps in the next book? The audio book was so well read - it was a pleasure to listen to!

Why I chose this book: This is the part 2 of the series of the book that I was reading
Write a brief summary: A girl named kira who has a broken leg have a mother who died 4 years ago. Kira was talented at weaving. As Kira find her future in weaving she decided to create a better future for the people of the community.

This was a great story. I absolutely loved The Giver and it was interesting to read about one of the other communities from the first book. I do wish it would have been a continuation of the first book but this one was fantastic on its own. Time for the next one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love how people's strengths and weaknesses are used differently in this read and how history is remembered, spun, and forgotten. Can not wait to see how these stories come together to see the whole picture.

⭐⭐⭐ I enjoyed this better than The Giver. I'm confused as to why there was no blue in the village though. And why the two books don't seem to connect except for a maybe mention of Jonas that I'm not even sure of. 😒
10/10 Fairly short read, would make for a very interesting longer story. Matt and Branch are my favourite characters in this. Some interesting plant knowledge in this one as well.

Kira's saved after her mother dies, she is told she is no longer welcome due to her disfigurement. Kira feels lucky to have been rescued from a hard life or even death, she is now protected by the guardians and is taken care of much better than she could have imagined. But the longer she stays the more she learns that something is just not quite right. She, Matt & Thomas decide to investigate and figure out what is happening. 4/5 ⭐

Lois Lowry is a powerful but gentle writer. She knows how to carry you away, Iull you, and then surprise you. “Gathering Blue” is officially my favorite book from her. I cherish the image of Kira threading the robe of the Singer, saddening, blooming, and bleeding for art.

In my opinion, this wasn't as good as The Giver, but still a great story! On to book 3 of the quartet.

Only a few #BlueBooks from my shelves 💙
@howjessreads

I found this today and was like whoa! The Giver has been sitting in my shelf for awhile so this will go next to it since it says it‘s a companion to it!

Another great story from Lowry! In 215 pages she builds a world and creates characters that you love and hate. What an amazing book for young readers to dive into and really get them thinking. I can‘t wait to read the next book!
It was ok. The story itself was so so, and the general plot and motivation was easily forgotten.

This book was ok. I am reading this series for the first time as an adult. I listened to 'The Giver' last fall and liked it. This book was just ok. I am into 'The Messenger' next which I am hoping I will enjoy more than this book.

I've read The Giver and I liked it. Now I need to read this title and the others in the quartet.

Shades of blue (the color, not the TV show)
Summer
Mystery
Aside from reading, I like to visit Civil War battlefields and make jewelry (separately, not at the same time)
Pretzels and M&Ms (together, not separately)
In a few hours, a margarita
Bookmarks and book totes (you can never have too many)
I‘m pretty late to this party, so consider yourself tagged if you want to be!

Came home for lunch & to such a nice treat from @Robothugs ! These are beautiful, I love them🖤🖤🖤

I loved 'The Giver' and have always wanted to finish the series (once I learned it was a series). This is #2 of 4 books. I like how this entire world is a mystery...its supposed to be a futuristic world, but it seems like a very out-dated way of life. I couldn't imagine growing up as Kira did.
It feels like they could of put all 4 books together, as they seem too short to read as a stand-alones. On to #3 'Messenger'. Got to find out what happens!

This book is much like "The Giver", it was an alternate future, or a dystopian society. Much different form Jonas' community but there is much emphasis on "survival of the fittest", strong against the weak. It was a really inspiring and eye-opener book. And like "The Giver" it will definitely leave you begging for more.

Day 8: "'Take pride in your pain... You are stronger than those who have none.'"

I've read more this year than I have in a while which is definitely nice because I have a long to read list to get to. I finished both of these today and though they are wildly different from each other I enjoyed them and wished that both had been longer. I especially enjoyed the world Lowry created in Gathering Blue and would have loved to learn more about it.
Freaking Lois Lowry and her inability to properly end a book. 😡 I enjoyed it very much... but what happens?? How does it all end?? Does Jameson get his due? Does Kira get the life she deserves? Does Mat learn to bathe regularly? So many questions.

Road-tripping to Pittsburgh with some friends for #Anthrocon! Getting some reading time in on the way.
