I was really enjoying the book, but at some point it started feeling a bit disjointed. It kind of jumped in scenes a little bit, making it hard to follow. It also had moments were it felt like nothing was particularly happening, kind of the same thing over and over again. I do think the concept was good, but there were things it could have improved on.

This was a well written and interesting book. I was excited to find a fantasy work with agender fluid protagonist. The protagonist's fluidity felt really well written and characterized as well. So, I love Sal, Sal being the very aggressively (and refreshingly) genderfluid main character of this murder-filled duology.

Anyway. I love Sal.

I would go into a burning building for Sal.

I would kill for Sal.

I would rip my still-beating heart out of my own damn chest for Sal.

Have I mentioned I love Sal? I‘m not kidding—I *love* Sal, and very much need to get my hands on the second book.

Overall, this book tired me out. Sal‘s story felt very generic, it was every other competition/assassin type book rolled into one and honestly it annoyed me how easy it was for her - or him, depending on the day - to accomplish something that seemed so impossible at the beginning.

However, the end did surprise me. And yet it didn‘t. I liked it. 3.5⭐️

I absolutely loved this book. Assassins are aways a way to win my heart but the way Linsey was able to normalize the main characters gender-fluidity is what really won me over. One thing I've noticed with many LGBTQ characters is that the author makes them being queer the only main thing about the character. Linsey made Sal more than just being gender-fluid. It was a bit predictible at times but I didn't mind it as much with this novel.

I quite liked this one! The rather inventive auditions was pretty cool and I liked the air of mystery (and sarcasm) from the members of the Left Hand.
Sal was a pretty cool character as well and marks my first gender fluid protagonist.

A great beginning to a new fantasy series! Love characters with lots of snarky sass and Mask of Shadows doesn't disappoint! Doesn't hesitate to play around with notions of gender fluidity, without it having to bludgeon the reader unnecessarily. Did feel there were times when Sal‘s personality and actions didn't match their words, which made it confusing to get a full read of their personality.

Fast-paced with great world building & an intriguing gender fluid protagonist. The romance was pretty sweet, too. But the plot was extremely similar to Throne of Glass, with some Hunger Games thrown in. Sal's need for vengeance was amply explained, but so much of their motivation was hidden in a past we don't see. It's hard to build sympathy for a murderous character & simultaneously keep them distant that way. I'm very conflicted about this book.

I enjoyed this book. I feel most reviews knocked it cuz it's not original in the plot. I agree I wouldn't call it an original plot line but I feel that way about most books! It was fun and exciting!! I liked the characters a lot!!

I received a copy in the mail as a surprise from @Sourcebooks so I want to say thank you. I'm not sure if it was because it was an arc however I felt like the story line didn't flow very well. I loved the story and the idea but when things happened they weren't explained or it jumped from one thing to the next with no connection. I think that if a little more detail with events were needed to make the flow of the story better

Sal is a total anti-hero since all they care about is having their revenge. They‘re not a killer but since the trial is a death fight they don‘t mind getting through it whatever it costs. But at the same time, you can clearly tell they‘re a good person at the core. I loved how the author treats the genderfluidity of Sal. Not making a big deal out of it since it doesn‘t define them, but at the same time talking about it, making it visible.

I really did try to stick it out, I wanted to love this book. But I'm so bored I can't finish it. The plot line is interesting, the non-binary main character learning to be an assassin is cool, but the writing is just so...so. Part of it is my preference for details, I like an abundance of details. Describe the shape of literally every floorboard for me. The first person narrative here leaves HUGE chunks up to the reader which I didn't like.

I love the history in this book and would love to see more dealing with the Shadows. The flow is wonky and hard to follow at times though. This was my read for #pridemonth. The main character, Sal, is #genderfluid.

I loved the main character, even though she was a little flat. But in general it was a mash up of many different plots, and wasnt very descriptive. It was middle of the road. Like just over average but not omg worthy

I've never read a book with a non binary character, which makes this rather odd for me. I'm an ally, but the concept of gender fluidity is still extremely new to me as well. I'm stuck on old grammatical ways, so getting pronouns wrong has been issue for me. That said, Sal makes for an interesting character. I don't care for their attitude much, but the story's nice so far.

Today's #PrideRec prompt is "nonbinary character." I wanted to recommend SHADOW RUN - one of the side characters is genderfluid, and is written by a genderfluid author - but I appear to have lent out *both* of the copies that I own. Instead, I'll highlight MASK OF SHADOWS, a fantasy book coming from Sourcebooks with a genderfluid assassin protagonist. I love magic and murder and can't wait to see how MASK OF SHADOWS twines them together.
