Bloodchild: And Other Stories
Bloodchild: And Other Stories | Octavia E Butler
A perfect introduction for new readers and a must-have for avid fans, this New York Times Notable Book includes "Bloodchild," winner of both the Hugo and the Nebula awards and "Speech Sounds," winner of the Hugo Award. Appearing in print for the first time, "Amnesty" is a story of a woman named Noah who works to negotiate the tense and co-dependent relationship between humans and a species of invaders. Also new to this collection is "The Book of Martha" which asks: What would you do if God granted you the ability and responsibility to save humanity from itself?Like all of Octavia Butler s best writing, these works of the imagination are parables of the contemporary world. She proves constant in her vigil, an unblinking pessimist hoping to be proven wrong, and one of contemporary literature s strongest voices."

I love this edition, each story and essay is followed by a quick afterword by Butler giving her thought process, inspirations, and or reasonings for writing choices made. It helps to understand the stories, and now I know if anyone asks where to start with her work I will point them here.

My favorite of the short pieces is The Evening and the Morning and the Night. love the way she plays with genetics and situations of control.

Bloodchild is a very good sci fi story.. Memorable!!! Humans are on another planet and have to help the species on this planet to survive. Speech Sounds is about a future Earth where no one can speak and many can't read.
Amnesty is one of the strangest sci fi pieces I've read. Noah is a translator for aliens that live in a collective and resemble bushes. They first did experiments on humans, but are now trying to live with them peacefully. +more

I‘ve been trying for the last hour to pinpoint why I loved this book so much. The stories were great, spooky and compelling, but there‘s more to it. I love Octavia Butler‘s voice. I love the realness of the worlds she created in the book, mind you, I wouldn‘t want to live in any of them. I loved the afterwards. I loved how the essays felt like I was reading the words of a caring friend who won‘t lie to you, but wants to encourage you all the same.

Again, not my usual genre but so imaginative and well written. I love that Butler wrote an Afterword for each story telling from where/how the story originated and what her intent was.

Genius. If you have a weak stomach don‘t read Bloodchild. All the stories were great and I love the afterword because it explained her thought processes. I learned a lot and Googled things.

This was a solid collection of short stories and a couple of essays thrown in there. What tickled me were the notes after each entry from Octavia and the insight into her inspiration. There‘s an afterword where she describes the 3 genetic disorders she uses to make up the one she uses in a story and if you‘re interested in genes gives you a reading list. She was amazing. Bloodchild, The Evening the Morning and the Night, and Amnesty were my faves.

TheSpineView I loved that collection too. My favorites are Blood Child and Speech Sounds. 5y
ValerieAndBooks This is a good collection! I picked it up because of SPeech Sounds. Now I have a couple more of hers in the TBR... 5y

This collection has incredible range. There‘s nonfiction, autobiography, alien invasions, medical misadventures, man made plagues, and post-apocalyptic madness. Each story somehow creates entire worlds with details and mythology, and you buy into this collective knowledge even within a few pages. The stories are pretty short, but somehow the totally perfect length. Great for a quick read.

I‘m still coming back to this quote as I read some on my science fiction list for this year.

JazzFeathers Actually, l think this goes for any speculative genre. That's why l think readers should be less suspicious of speculative fiction 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers I agree. In this case her field was science fiction, and the stories in this collection are from the 70‘s and 80‘s. I think she was advocating for her specific field in this essay, and honestly I‘m not sure the term “speculative fiction” was used then the same way it is now. 6y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Probably not. I've been a fantasy reader since the 1980s (that kind of fantasy has such a unique flavour now) but l've only encountered the term speculative fiction in the last decade or so. There used to be more division between speculative genres back then (or so it seems to me). Today, borders are more blurred. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers That‘s been my experience too. Sounds like we‘ve been reading around the same time period. When I was younger there were more sub-genres it seemed, and stories were in one box or the other. Now I see much more crossover material, and labels that seem to embrace that true nature of the writing...which is usually in multiple categories. 6y

Started this book of short stories last night, the first story was so creepy! Interestingly though, Butler puts afterwards after each story describing what she was thinking of/going for and how the story is usually interpreted...and strangely I got some of that and a bit more too.

So interesting to see how stories hold up, and mean different things in different ages depending on the experiences of the reader.

This is why book clubs are fun! I‘m glad I read this collection for the #texeast #lmpbc even though I‘m not a short story person or a sci fi person. Some of the stories really weirded me out, like the title one, and others were interesting food for thought. Although it didn‘t convert me to either genre, it‘s good to get out of my comfort zone and be exposed to a great author.

LiteraryinPA @bookish_wookish This is in the mail to you! 6y

Hey, #texeast ladies! I‘m getting close to finishing my pick, and I was wondering what you guys want to do in regards to reviewing our books. I know some groups are sharing their reviews on Litsy, but others are keeping their reviews for their group‘s books to themselves until they‘ve all been passed around, so I didn‘t want to post a review on here if you all wanted to go with the latter option. Do you guys have a preference about this?
