Happy #AriMetDanteDay! Just as a reminder to any San Antonio littens, the movie is available to stream on Kanopy via mysapl but if your library uses Kanopy it‘s worth taking a look.

peanutnine I keep meaning to watch this! It's on Hoopla too I believe 5mo
MatchlessMarie @peanutnine I kept looking for it when it first came out but it was only in select theaters nowhere near me and I never saw it streaming anywhere til recently. I really liked the adaptation. 5mo

Love is a strange thing. And I truly felt it through the characters portrayed in this book. The pain, the ache of growing up, the rawness of falling in love. Dante and Aristotle will live on in my mind for a long time.

Set in 1987, El Paso, the novel explores the intense complexities of adolescence & self-discovery through the pithy narration of Ari; a confused, miserable teen lost in the throes of summer, attempting to phase through who he is while bottling up his mounting emotions for his best friend, Dante. I developed an affinity with everything about this story; identifying with Ari until I found pieces of myself scattered throughout the melancholic prose.

This is the story of two boys who are both loaners who become friends in late 80‘s Texas. It is a beautiful and sweet story about true friendship, family, trauma, first love and learning about your true self. I have had this on my TBR for far too long and finally picked it up as one of my Pride month picks. I highly recommend, this is YA and very age appropriate but a great read for adults too. 5⭐️

I adored this book about two 16 yr old boys friendship, navigating their sexuality and families. It was beautiful, moving and tender. It‘s the kind of book you wish you could place into every young man‘s hands.
Have you read it @Reggie ? I feel like it‘s your kind of book!

Reggie 5 years ago I went to an indie bookstore in Albuquerque and they were promoting that the author was gonna be there in a week and I had read good stuff about the book so I bought it. Read it THAT day and cried a lot. It was a perfect book on a perfect day and I went to see the author who was nothing but nice. I will never read its sequel because that book to me is perfect. Short answer: yes. Lol glad you liked it, too! 2y
Rissreads @Reggie I‘m not sure if I will read the second book. It‘s also been made into a movie. 2y
Centique @Reggie that is such a great story. There are a just a few perfect books that you read on the perfect day for them. 🙌 2y

For any Littens interested, these sold out quickly a few weeks ago, so this next batch will likely sell quickly as well. I just purchased this for my 20yo - this is one of her all-time favorites. Signed with a personal inscription by Ben Saenz, & it's not any more expensive than a typical hardcover book.

A coming of age story from 15yr old Ari‘s POV. Ari is a Mexican American boy growing up in CA in the 80s. He befriends another teen boy who is the opposite of him. They have conversations that are not normal for boys that age but it made sense for their personalities. I hate the added “romantic” part, why can‘t these young men just be childhood best friends? This was about loyalty and learning what that means at an important age. Book #62 in 2022

I‘m going to be honest, I read like twenty pages of this and was convinced I wouldn‘t like it for reasons based purely on the tone. But I stuck with it even after pg. 80 out of fear of disappointing my mother as she insisted I read this someday. By pg. 100 I was hooked. It just sucked me in. I never found myself spacing out. It was amazing how you could feel the character development in the tone even as Ari went from lonely and sad to happy.5🌟 ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️ I just want to ask real quick, is it worth reading the second one? I‘ve heard a lot of bad things and want to know if I‘m wasting my time. 2y

At first I wasn‘t exactly sure whether or not I liked this book. I loved some things and hated others. It had an interesting story in some places but I found myself getting bored in others. All the parents are really interesting characters that I loved a lot! I think Ari and Dante‘s growth was really nice! I would definitely recommend it but not to everyone. I don‘t regret reading it and I really loved it in some places, especially the end.

A beautiful five star coming-of-age novel about two Mexican-American boys discovering their identity and sexuality in the 80's. Loved the stream-of-consciousness writing, the quotes, the way it portrayed people dealing with trauma differently, and the familial relationships.

Another book I‘ve been waiting a long time to read with a hold that came in just in the nick of time. I didn‘t know Lin-Manuel Miranda read this one. I‘m even more excited for it now. I think I have just enough time left in Pride Month to get through this one. I won‘t have the second book for about 3 weeks, but that‘s okay. I think we need Pride all year round at this point.

This book is an absolute gem. It‘s so beyond wholesome and real. As adults, I think we lose the joy of simple things, and Saenz brought that back in this coming of age tale. The secrets of the universe are found everywhere, you just need to look. It‘s beautiful.
