There was a time in my life when I would have loved this book. I think that time has passed. This felt unnecessarily convoluted and I was tempted to start skimming halfway through. Several characters lacked development, which didn‘t help the narrative issues. And the whole thing with the uncle/brother was unnecessarily creepy. But the completist in me kept going, and now I‘ve finished #AuthorAMonth for 2023! 💃🏻🕺

Soubhiville Sorry you didn‘t love it, but that wraps up #aam for you! Woohoo! 12mo

It‘s been a while since I‘ve read a historical fiction but it was just what I needed. I have been so stressed out and anxious that I need low key, not stressful books.

This is my first by this author, though I own a couple of her other books.

This one was pretty good. Cassandra‘s grandmother dies and she sets off on a journey to discover her grandmother‘s history. We visit Australia, London, and Cornwall.

dabbe Hello there, adorable pup! 🖤🐾🖤 1y

TheQuietQuill I just got done reading this one too, and it was such a beautiful yet sad story. I had dreams about that garden though haha 😍 1y
Laughterhp @TheQuietQuill Right!! I would love to see that garden. 1y
Chrissyreadit I just dnf the book- i think timing was wrong for me because it was so sad in so many places. But it was a good story. It may sound strange but it reminded me of the style in Black Beauty- bad stuff, good stuff, very bad stuff, sort of good stuff, some good stuff, bam!!! catastrophe bad stuff, then HEA…. 1y

I don‘t think I was prepared for this sad, yet heartwarming tale of a family trying to find their past. The book was, at times, a bit slow for me but some parts I found to be completely enchanting. Heartbreaking and heartwarming all at once 😂

Found this one on Pango, and this was definitely an impulsive buy due to the cover 😂 Not to mention, I‘m now addicted to buying and selling books on Pango 😍

Aims42 Love Pango!! I‘m supporting the “buying” side until I work up my nerve to sell 🙂 1y
TheQuietQuill It‘s seriously the most addicting thing haha! I was super nervous to sell at first too, since I‘ve never sold anything over the internet before. But they make it so easy and now I find it so fun whenever I sell a book. And the cool thing is, you can use the money you get from selling to buy more books on Pango. RECOMMENDATIONS NEEDED- I find Kate Morton‘s books to be utterly enchanting and fascinating. Im searching for other books and authors that would give me that same feeling. Thanks in advance!

bookaholic1 Have you read Cathy Lamb books?? She's one of my favorites 2y
Ssmith @bookaholic1 nope, never heard of her! I‘ll look into that. Thanks! 2y
Jess861 I really enjoy Kate Morton as well - and while maybe not exactly the same I've found that I've really enjoyed the works of Lori Lansens and Kate Quinn. I've also recently found Louise Erdrich and Taylor Jenkins Reid. 2y
Ssmith @Jess861 thanks! Yes, love Taylor Jenkins Reid. I‘ve read one of Kate Quinn‘s, but not the other two. I‘ll check them out. Thank you! 2y

Another gorgeously historic multi-generational tale from Kate Morton. She creates beautiful atmosphere and weaves personal tragedy and romance so we'll through her characters and their lives. A story you can picture easily in your imagination and feel that you are really there.

@IndoorDame @monalyisha Thanks to you both for such a rich list! I will be reading from it all year. The top row are books that were on my tbr. Second row are books I didn‘t know about previously but now really want to read. I‘m a slow reader so the third row are some that I may not get to until February. #AuldLangSpine

rockpools What a fabulous list! Ain‘t Burned All the Bright is AMAAAAAZING! 2y
IndoorDame I‘m I looking forward to getting to know each other through our books this year! 2y
monalyisha I‘m happy you‘re interested in so many of them! My post was totally aspirational; there‘s no way I‘ll read as many as I featured in January (especially considering that I‘m in a couple of book clubs, as well). But it‘s fun to dream! And I‘ll keep reading from it as time goes on. 😉 Have fun! 2y

SueK @monalyisha glad to hear it‘s aspirational. That takes some of the pressure off 😅 It‘s always fun to get new recs for the tbr. I like the goal of reading them within 2023 as well, so I‘ll probably set that for myself. 2y
monalyisha @SueK Absolutely, yeah! The only commitment is to read at least one in January. If you/I get to more, great! If not, no worries. I‘m a mood reader so it‘s hard for me to give up agency in picking my own titles, no matter how appealing a list may be. I think I usually get to 3 or so in January. 😊 I try to find a pace where I can savor & enjoy. 2y
SueK @monalyisha I‘m also a mood reader. Thanks for the tip in balancing retaining your own agency while participating in book challenges and groups. I‘ve always struggled with that. 2y

I‘m not usually a reader of historical romance/mystery but Kate Morton‘s books are an exception. Set between two time periods & countries usually, this one in particular was amazing. Set between Australia & Cornwall in England, it has everything I love in a story. Secrets, a beautiful hidden garden & great settings. Another recommendation.

3: Probably The Forgotten Garden, even though it dragged when I read it. It‘s gotten better the more I think about it.

Misty, I can‘t thank you enough for this gift. I‘ve been reading it slowly for the last month, and just I adored it! I saw a review that compares this to The Secret Garden (one of my favorites) and it definitely has some of that magic, plus a mystery to hook adult readers. The one thing I didn‘t love was the inclusion of some of the actual fairy tales that are part of the storyline. They might have retained more luster if they were just hinted at.

Unpopular opinion based on the reviews here and Goodreads, but I did not click with this one. Eliza and Nell were compelling characters but everyone else was one dimensional or awful. I figured out the final twist less than halfway through the book, so having to slog through 300+ pages for the characters to catch up was a chore. In general this needed stronger editing as the pacing was rough. I didn‘t enjoy it as much as Clockmaker‘s Daughter.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As always with Kate Morton, it's a chunkster, and a very dense plot that I find I needed to read slowly. Interesting characters, shifting timelines, and some unexpected plot twists. I love the images that the author evokes. Definitely recommend. Picture is from the kitchen garden at Chatsworth; the book mentions an espaliered apple tree, and this was the first time I'd seen that technique.

I really loved this. It‘s the best book I‘ve read in a long time. The pace is quite slow, but I found in our current crazy state of life it was just what I needed. The writing is beautiful and the characters are intriguing. I loved the slow reveal of the mystery at the heart of the story, and the span across generations. I did find Nell a puzzling character, but I still loved the book. #readingbuddy #klaus #petsoflitsy #quarantinereading

This was a great book to dip in and out of all week when I got home from work. Multiple characters and time lines and an engrossing central mystery about a young girl left alone on a boat to Australia. It was both easy to pick up and put down again when I couldn‘t focus any longer. I was disappointed by the ending. I had predicted much of it but other aspects were a bit over the top for me but the journey to get there was worth it.
