Look what I found at the Dollar Tree tonight!! I'm so excited to found this! It's been on my TBR for few months. Woohoo!

So today something that has never happened to me happened. I won a free trip to Cancun. So my books and are going on a new adventure to the beach!

Unfortunately I can't find any books by Mexican/Mexican-American authors. I'm sure I will find some recommendations after this prompt though!

Barkan's writing was good, but I expected a wider variation due to the title. I appreciated that his characters were a variety of people, but I would have liked more variation in voice and a heads-up that all of the stories were about the effect of drug cartels on their lives. Overall, I think this one would be better read as individual stories with some time between readings, rather than reading through the book in a short time period. #netgalley

Just selling some books at a reading at Riverview Tavern tonight.

I kind of wish this book was called Cartel: stories as each story centers around how ordinary people respond when the cartel comes bursting into their world. These are ok stories with more good than bad, but one has been told so many times- a surgeon is given the dilemma of saving a cartel's life. Mexico isn't really a "character" in the stories, but the cartel is. A solid ok short story collection.

If you're looking to get a taste of Mexican culture from a white guy's perspective, than this collection of short stories is for you. Besides a repetitive use of the word narco and a few Mexican characters, there's really nothing else to link this to a POC. The characters don't draw you in and are all similar. I probably wouldn't recommend this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

My goal for February is to knock out some of these ARCs from #netgalley and to continue my series reads with The Wicked Will Rise and Anne of Windy Poplars. Should be a fun month! #tbr #feistyfeb

One story I felt to be a standout--The Sharpshooter. Otherwise, these stories are full of characters with the same voice--whether they are American or Mexican, young or old. It makes for odd reading. I also wish I had counted the number of times the word "narco" appears.

Ice outside? Check. Fire inside? Check. Sleeping four-year-old? Check. Tea, check. ARC on phone, check. Good to go! 😁☕️️🎉

Okay, I'm sorry, but if I have to read the word "narco" one more time, I will probably pull my hair out ? #annoyed

This short story collection tells about the lives of folks from different walks of life (teacher, beauty queen, mime) and how the threat of violence from the drug cartels lurks behind every corner. Great short fiction but works so well as a collected whole. My favorite was the plastic surgeon's story. #netgalley

Feeling pretty good about this list for the week. Started the top three books last night/today. Must do a little reading down of my netgalley stash, too. Mexico is a short story collection, so should be easy to fit into things.

Oh, and City on Fire will likely holdover for a couple weeks, it's long as smurf, but really good so far.

#seasonsreadings2016 This is my nightstand. I don't own an ereader, as 90% of my books come from the library (so all the deals aren't really deals for me!). I do use serial reader on my phone, and occasionally get things from the library through overdrive (which saved my a** in my #cousera course when I forgot to request the readings!). Reading on my phone gives me a migraine if it's too long (30 m) and the ebook library catalog is hard to use 😕

The kids are playing peacefully so I get to drink coffee and read this short story collection. Told mostly in first-person, these stories explore the role of violence and drug cartels in everyday life in Mexico. I'm almost done and have liked most of them.

Enjoying my day off with a late breakfast and a galley!
