In the ninth Ruth Galloway mystery, Ruth and Nelson investigate a string of murders and disappearances deep within the abandoned tunnels hidden far beneath the streets of Norwich. Norwich is riddled with old chalk-mining tunnels, but no ones sure exactly how many. When Ruth is called in to investigate a set of human remains found in one of them, she notices the bones are almost translucent, a sign they were boiled soon after death. Once more, she finds herself at the helm of a murder investigation. Meanwhile, DCI Nelson is hunting for a missing homeless woman, Barbara, who he hears has gone underground. Could she have disappeared into the labyrinth? And if so, is she connected to the body Ruth found? As Ruth, Nelson, and the rest of their team investigate the tunnels, they hear rumors of secret societies, cannibalism, and ritual killings. When a dead body is found with a map that appears to be of The Underground, they realize their quest to find the killer has only just begunand that there may be more bodies underfoot.

I just inhaled, er finished, the ninth Ruth Galloway. Had to stay up; no going to sleep until I was done! It‘s the third Ruth I‘ve read in the last two weeks, messing with my “only read in season” mantra, but WTH. This one was actually set in June for the most part, and it‘s terrific. Bones, tunnels, Harry, Ruth, Judy (I love her character so much), Cathbad (not as much of him this book, to my disappointment), and of course, the new Super. Big 👍

MittenGirlPeach The pic is my solstice sunrise this morning! Making good headway on the my #BookSpinBingo card and also the #backlistreadathon (edited) 2y

I‘m on a roll. Just got the next two from the library. Excited to see what happens to the characters. I really like Ruth, I emphasise a lot with her. It‘s a bit like watching a TV series only better.

RobES I love a good murder mystery and I've never tried any Elly Griffth! Great recommendation 👍 2y

9th Ruth Galloway book finds the archaeologist excavating in the underground tunnels below Norwich. The book expands into an investigation about the disappearance and murder of homeless individuals.
This is a series which is a step up from cozy but not gritty, the enjoyment now is in well known characters however the eventual resolution stretched credibility and is always a bit frantic but I'll read on as it is always a quick read.

Soooo glad to get back to the Ruth Galloway series! It had been more than 6 years since I read the last one, but Griffiths gave enough information about prior events that I did not feel lost. The only negative to this book is there was not enough of Cathbad—the local Druid. Hopefully he will have a larger role in the next book.

Ruth is called on to look at some bones, surprise, surprise. Homeless people, rough sleepers, are disappearing. Are the two somehow connected? Possibly. But then the disappearances hit closer to home, and a more desperate search ensues. An underground brotherhood is discovered, secret entrances, tunnels. And have things changed between Ruth and Nelson? Read it to find out all the answers. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bones are found during construction work involving a network of tunnels under Norwich. Is there any connection with a homeless people who has disappeared and a homeless man who was stabbed overnight on the police station porch?

A good mystery with some intriguing background and a very exciting climax, but we still need Ruth to be doing more archaeology rather than focussing on the characters' domestic complications. A low pick.

Another great read in the series and of course a chance to see more in the Ruth and Nelson saga. I'm still not sure what ending I want for them. This built up well and the drama really built when Cassandra went missing. The story is interesting and I loved all the history in it. Coming from this area the tunnels have always been an interesting secret. Another book read for #24B4Monday #TeamSlaughter #Scareathlon @Clwojick

This may be the best yet in this series. It‘s a fascinating mystery, although less oriented toward archaeology than some of the others. Hard-to-connect murders and disappearances are resolved, and I really had no idea who the perp was ahead of time. These stories always involve personal drama, this one exceptionally poignant. I loved it.

I like this series so much! Unlike some mystery series, all of the recurring characters are well-fleshed out, not just the main character. I keep reading because I want to know what happens to them all. I liked that this one focused a little more on Judy, one of the police officers. I think she's my favorite secondary character. Ruth's life is always interesting too, especially as she makes choices I wouldn't!

The 9th in Elly Griffiths' RUTH GALLOWAY MYSTERIES is strong on the relationships between the detectives in Nelson's Team and in his relationship with Galloway but the homelessness storyline didn't quite gel for me and had a means to an end feel to it while the antagonist's motivation was so ridiculous and features so late in the plot that I couldn't take it seriously.
