A long and slow read, but I savored it all. While it‘s possible one might love this without having read Moby Dick already, I really feel this novel is much more appreciated and richer if you have.

This novel felt more like historical fiction (Ahab‘s wife encounters Emerson, Hawthorne, Frederick Douglass, etc) than just being strictly a supplement to the story of Ahab pursuing Moby Dick.

DivineDiana I have this book! But alas, it is still on the TBR. As an advocate for animals, I am thinking that Moby Dick is not for me. Your photo is lovely! 5y
Ruthiella Love the themed photo!😍 5y
Cinfhen Pretty photo 5y
ValerieAndBooks @DivineDiana @Ruthiella @Cinfhen thanks! One thing that this novel and Moby Dick does though is make me want to visit Nantucket! I‘ve been to Cape Cod but not the islands. 5y

Hmm. Good advice (it‘s almost how I do mine) but Ahab‘s wife should organize her books however she wants ✊📚!

Note: I really like this novel, but it is VERY slow going. I am only halfway through, and it‘s been a month (albeit a very busy one) since I started it!

Laura317 I don‘t organize my books. At all. I like the chaos. 5y
Hooked_on_books I read this book years ago and loved it. 5y
Lindy My shelves are chaotic and I like it that way. If I want order, I go to the public library shelves. 5y

ValerieAndBooks @Laura317 as long as you have books, that‘s what matters 💖📚📚📚!! 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Hooked_on_books I love it too, but it‘s a unhurried read. 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Lindy ha! Put that way, I guess my shelves don‘t live up to public library standards either 😊 5y

This above really struck me!!

Pictured is an old chess set that belonged to my dad. My mom had texted me this photo a while back confirming whether I wanted it. YES. She hasn‘t sent it out yet but I have so many memories of this set as a kid — not just chess but playing games with the pieces. It captured my imagination, such as it does for her. Never thought of the board as a beach until now!

Idk if this set is also ivory and walnut though.

😍 the author of Ahab‘s Wife mirrors the inscription of Moby Dick. And also this is illustrated in the style Rockwell Kent did for Moby Dick. Love this— now hoping the rest of this novel doesn‘t let me down!

Hoopiefoot I really love this book. I hope you will too! 6y

Starting this today as my current poolside read! Need to clean up in and around the pool first while it‘s still shady, though.

LeahBergen Lucky you to have a pool! 😍 6y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen thanks! This is the first year that we can hopefully use it all summer— the previous owners left it in such disrepair and now it‘s finally to the point where it‘s almost 💯 functioning 😎 6y

blankpagesofmine I haven't read any of these!! Which one would you recommend the most? 8y
Betty_Bookworm @blankpagesofmine Depends on what you are in the mood for. They are each so very amazing in their own ways and I reread them all regularly. 8y
blankpagesofmine I will definitely add some of these to my tbr. I'm probably most curious about Station Eleven and The Bell Jar, since those I've heard the most feedback anout 8y

I did it! I finished it! I liked this book, but I don't see how it could be a bestseller. It feels far too peculiar and dense and poetic (which partly bothered me) to be appeal to your average reader. It's an impressive book, nonetheless. I obviously need to read Moby Dick now.

This was a pick for a book club with some coworkers. Every one of us disliked it, so we all stopped. One of us had even taken it (hardcover and huge) to Italy. She left it there! I know some of you loved it though! #readjanuary #DNF

beagle.mama I tried reading this when it came out. Couldn't do it. I LOVE books that show another perspective. Wicked got me hooked on that idea. But this, nope. 8y
Reviewsbylola That's pretty epic. I can't think of any book club selections that every single member in my club hated and couldn't finish. 8y

Tried to put together a reading list for #LitsyAtoZ but the engineering OCD side of my brain was frustrated. Decided I needed to catalog all the books on my bookshelves first. Not even 1/3 done and I think I have all the letters represented except X in titles. No way I can mix titles and authors names. It's one or the other.

Any suggestions for titles starting with X?

Megabooks I have some a few down on my wall and people have added more in the comments. 😃👍🏻 8y
Suzze Glad I'm not the only one that feels like - I have to organize this before I can do that. 😁 my X is X by Sue Grafton, but I happen to be up to 8y
Suzze x in her books so it worked for me. 8y

From the "Read This ... Not That" files. If you were tempted to read Queen of the Night, but were worried it was too long for too little payoff, read "Ahab's Wife" instead. This was a great book, coming to life and creating a fully realized foreground in the background of Moby Dick.

Not the same, but finishing Queen of the Night made my want to re-read this one as a palette cleanser.

Hooked_on_books Love this book! 8y

Karkar Do you have to read or have read Moby Dick to enjoy this book? It sounds very interesting! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I read this book years ago and still think about it all the time!! @Karkar no Moby knowledge required (at least, I hadnt read MD when I read this book and I had no problems) 8y
SusieLMNOP1 I read this when it first came out and I remember being blown away by the writing. I should plan a re-read soon. 8y
LukkiAnn Thanks for your recommendation🙏🏻 it came handy😉 8y
Yossarian @Karkar As with most books based on others, knowing Moby Dick adds to the texture, but is not required. In this case, I'd think that knowing the story, or seeing the movie of Moby Dick would be sufficient background. 8y
Procrastireader Ahem. "Palate" cleanser. 8y
tolmsted The scene on the lifeboat in this book haunts me to this day! 8y

Finally getting to this meaty bit of historical fiction - that's been on my shelf for years! Huge fan of Moby Dick, this is proving an interesting, if peculiar, companion.

Books.a.Lot @Booktrovert I still think about your husband's tattoo on occasion. One day I will re-read Moby Dick and it will be thanks to his ink! :D 8y
Booktrovert @Books.a.Lot cool!!! He's added to it - working on a bit of a literary sleeve. Going to get the whale touched up soon with more white highlights. 😀🐳 8y

Yesterday's #libraryhaul! So, I returned 4 books, borrowed these two, and have another 17 from the library to boot. @BookBabe started laughing, and I said, "Well, at least I don't have a problem" ??! And #Coale always enjoys smelling the new books we bring home from there anyway. And they're out of the library's hands for awhile. So it's a win all-around ???. Excellent logic, I think ???.

DGRachel Ahab's Wife is one that sticks with you. I read it more than 10 years ago and I still think about it. Enjoy! 8y

A gorgeous read inspired by Moby Dick, but centered around Una, a strong, inspiring woman who had her own encounter with a whale. I've seen criticism that the novel is too long-winded, but I found it to be a beautiful read, the kind that stays with you long after the covers are closed. #booksetbythesea #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge
