I recently started watching the Rebus tv series on BritBox, and decided I really should read the books. I was not disappointed! This is the first book in the series, and while it wasn‘t perfect, it was pretty darned good! I‘m hoping to find most of the series at the library. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Anyone else participating in the R.I.P. (Readers Imbibing in Peril) challenge on Instagram and/or Twitter? It begins September 1 and goes through October 31. The idea is to read as many mystery/horror/gothic books, stories, etc. as you‘d like. This is the 15th anniversary of the challenge. It‘s something I look forward to every year. Weekend reading plans! I love Anthony Trollope, and Framley Parsonage does not disappoint. The Milton biography is excellent, providing cultural and literary contexts about 17th century England in addition to details about the life of John Milton. Slow reading, to be sure, but interesting. #fridayreads #amreading

Mehso-so

This should have been a fascinating story about bootleggers, prohibition, corruption, and murder during the 1920‘s. Instead, it was drawn out and dry, almost to the point of being tedious, in spite of a few interesting guest appearances such as Clarence Darrow. Fortunately, this was an audiobook - if I had tried to read a physical book, I might have given up on it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

RamsFan1963 I started this audiobook, but couldn't get into it. I ended up bailing. 4y

Joining in with @Lcsmcat and others for the #WolfeRead of You Can‘t Go Home Again by Thomas Wolfe. This is my first time to read Wolfe. I had no idea he died at such a young age (37) and that this book wasn‘t published until after his death. I found this collection of Wolfe‘s works on my Kindle.

Lcsmcat This is my first Wolfe too. 5y
Butterfinger @SharonGoforth Mine also and I'm ashamed to say that I may be overwhelmed by some of the wording. Brilliant writing from classics go over my head. But, I still want to pursue classics. 5y
SharonGoforth @Butterfinger He‘s definitely wordy (and I‘ve only read the first chapter). Hopefully I‘ll be able to get past the racist remarks. But the story sounds intriguing, and I think it‘s interesting that he opened the book the way he did, about his lover. 5y

“He talked to them about biopsychical projections of subconscious complexes into the objective; about transactions of which the medical constitution, the somnambulic state, was to be regarded as the source; and which one might speak of as objectivated dream-concepts, in so far as they confirmed an ideoplastic property of nature, a power, which under certain conditions appertained to thought, of drawing substance to itself, and clothing itself ⬇️

SharonGoforth in temporal reality.” Ok, @Lcsmcat , I give... 5y
SharonGoforth I‘m only 50 pages away from finishing this book - what a journey it‘s been!! - but this sentence has me completely baffled!!! (edited) 5y
HardcoverHearts How frustrating!!! 5y
See All 6 Comments
SharonGoforth @HardcoverHearts It is!! I‘ve spent the past 30 minutes trying to figure out what Mann means! This hasn‘t been an easy read, but I‘ve managed to hang in there until I read this! I‘ll just move along and hopefully it will make sense! 5y
Lcsmcat I just took this as nonsense spouted by the believers of the séance. Hans was constantly buffeted by ideas, from Dr. K, Settembrini, Naphtha, even Peeperkorn. And he didn‘t get most of them, he was just swept away on the tide of talk. So I felt like Mann was putting the reader in Hans‘ shoes with this kind of sentence. ??‍♀️ 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat He certainly did a good job of that! That was Dr. K‘s nonsense, from one of his lectures. Peeperkorn was interesting in that he said a lot without actually saying anything. It seems that Mann liked to use the different characters as representatives of specific philosophical ideas he was exploring. 5y

SharonGoforth @Leftcoastzen Exactly!! ⛵️ 5y
Lcsmcat Great TBR! I‘ve loved a lot of those. And you‘ll find The Magic Mountain speeds up as you near the end. Those last pages speed by! 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat Thanks! I‘m still in the middle of Naphta and Settembrini, and it‘s a little confusing trying to keep their philosophies straight. I really like the way Mann presents both points of view, though, and then bounces them off Hans Castorp as a sort of sounding board. 5y
Lcsmcat @SharonGoforth Their arguments do get eye crossing! Naphta in particular annoyed me, but things get really crazy between those two near the end. I think a clear idea of their philosophies is less important than the reaction of Hans, who bounces from idea to idea depending on who is influencing him at any given moment. 5y

@Lcsmcat Linda, just a heads-up - I was looking ahead to see how long Chapter 5 is, and discovered that in the Lowe-Porter translation, there are pages of conversation between Hans and Frau Chauchat that are in French!! Just wanted to mention it in case you‘re like me and don‘t read French 😱😱. I did some checking, and the John Woods translation is in English. I found it on Kindle for $1.99. #magicmountain

Lcsmcat Thanks! I do read French, but it‘s good to be prepared. I just got through all the “science” of creation and organic vs inorganic matter. First, do you think Mann believed all that? And second, OMG, even with my limited scientific background I was appalled. 5y
Lcsmcat I picked up the eBook also, but because it‘s so windy here that I can‘t read a paper book outside on the deck. So I‘m going back and forth. 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat I felt like I sat through a 3 day A&P lecture!! I‘m wondering how much of it was driven by the knowledge available at the time he wrote it, or if it was his way of setting up a change in Hans‘ philosophical beliefs (because of Settembrini‘s influence)? I liked the “atom as a universe” description. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Lcsmcat Have you gotten this far yet? Because both my hard copy and the eBook had this section in French. I‘m curious whether you found a translation that put it in English. 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat I realized last night after I posted, that they are both the same translation, even though Kindle says it is the Woods translation. So I wound up ordering the paperback of the Everyman‘s Library edition, which is supposed to be Woods. Should arrive tomorrow. I‘m at page 295, so not quite to the French part yet. 5y

Mehso-so

What started out as a fast-paced romp about a couple entering the Redex Reliability Trial to help their car dealership in the first half devolved into a bit of a slog about the horrendous treatment of Australia‘s native population in the second half. It would have been ok if the two halves somehow met up at the end, but they really didn‘t. 3 stars for excellent writing, in spite of everything else. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
