“If you spent a day with Henry David Thoreau, when you left, you would glance back in the gathering dusk and wave. You would see Henry writing in his journal by the light of his kerosene lamp. He would look up and call, 'Remember- have an adventure every day!'“

A take on “meeting“ Henry David Thoreau. Fictionalized since it is
“imagining“ what a day with him would be like, but accurate based on known habits, likes, and knowledge of Thoreau.

Shattuck embarks on six walking/canoeing journeys that Henry David Thoreau took in the 1800‘s. If I were to suggest a book of Shattuck‘s to read first I would read A History of Sound but this book is a terrific 2nd. Quotes from Thoreau and Shattuck‘s experience and descriptive writing offer some delightful comparisons. His unsettling description of an Airbnb he stayed in was enough to make the experience of reading this worthwhile. 🔽

Suet624 If you‘re interested in actually knowing more about Thoreau, Helen Humphrey‘s book is a lovely one to read. Thoreau was so much more than a guy at Walden Pond. And the photo is from a favorite spot of mine in Burlington, VT - Lake Champlain from Red Rocks Park. (edited) 3mo

@Suet624 I think Ben Shattuck is now officially one of my new favorite authors. The little book is just lovely. Funny, thoughtful, profound. It was a joy, no, it was such a privilege and treat to accompany this fine author on his walks and listen to him describe the people he meets, share quotes from Thoreau and also what he sees, feels and draws! Yes! His sketches are interspersed in the narrative… I might have a bit of a book crush, too.

Anna40 Oh! And I had no idea the book I ordered is autographed :) 3mo
Suet624 That‘s fantastic! As you know, I loved his History of Sound. You‘ve convinced me. I have to get this one. 3mo
Anna40 @Suet624 I think you won‘t be disappointed! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Six Walks 3mo

I‘ve read Thoreau‘s work, but I loved this graphic novel, which gives some highlights from his time at Walden pond. It‘s simple and straightforward and uses language and situations presented in Thoreau‘s actual book. It‘s a great way to sample Thoreau if you are interested, but don‘t want to tackle the original book.
