Hey @slategreyskies Crosby would share his grooming techniques if you were here. Here‘s hoping more realize Love is Love ! I can say without a doubt that my life has been so improved by diversity of all kinds that I have encountered. Hugs to you !🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️💋❤️👏👍✊
Part memoir and part analysis as to the trends toward authoritarianism & Nationalism across the globe by a former member of Obama‘s staff .He doesn‘t shy away from how US policy may also be to blame. Thoughtful analysis . Published when Navalny was still alive but had been poisoned, the one he survived. I weep for the future.
#SummerSouls #Boat in 1906 Jack London commissioned the building of a sailing vessel with a small engine intending to do a 7 yr. around the world voyage w/ wife Charmain & a small crew. this is an illustrated edition of their adventures. Left San Francisco, went to Hawaii, Marquesas Islands, Tahiti,Bora Bora, Fiji,Samoa , Solomon Islands and others.
🙄interesting idea but got tedious after awhile. I wanted to like it more than I did. I almost bailed halfway through. Anywho, I was surprised at the MCs lack of growth, annoying in the fact it sort of implies marriage is be all , end all. Seemed to me she had a pretty decent single life. Also seems like it is specifically written to secure movie or TV rights. 🙄Maybe I‘m just being a grump, ignore me or send me back up to the attic!
#TLT #ThreeListThursday Not Bad!
Can‘t just pick 3 The Blues Brothers, Ferris Buellers Day Off, Stripes , Terms Of Endearment ( Thanks, Larry McMurtry)
Die Hard ,( yes, it‘s a Christmas movie!)
#SummerSouls It‘s pretty hard to find the #sand in this Coney Island beach scene ! Love Weegee photographs though many are lurid crime scene photos.
#TuesdayTunes Happy #pride everybody! I have always adored this version of Shine ! I was living in Long Beach,CA. When Queer as Folk was popular. I had the idea to make “What Would Brian Kenny Do?” T-shirts, probably would have made some bucks before they stopped me for copyright infringement!

#serieslove2024 Starts with a bang not a whimper! The further adventures of Will Trent , Faith Mitchell, and Sara Linton does not disappoint. Not for the faint of heart , but if you like Slaughter you know that already .Crosby‘s tail , no extra charge! 😻
#SummerSouls #picnic The first thing I thought of was this 1955 film. Set on the end of the summer holiday, Labor Day weekend in Kansas .
My comment on Friday, cheers ,TGIF
#TLT #ThreeListThursday
I realize this is pretty f*****n ridiculous, but true! Wow, lots of movies!
Can‘t just list 3 American Graffiti, Animal House, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now,Cabaret ,The Way We Were, Star Wars, One Flew Over The Cuckoo‘s Nest,The Jerk. I‘m tired now
#StorySettings #Lake I loved Chandler when I first read him, that was long ago. When Vintage books did these retro covers years ago, I couldn‘t resist them.
#Korea Margaret Lee knew there was more to her grandfather than just being a prisoner back in Korea. Her grandmother had some information, but refused to talk about it ,too painful. Ultimately on Lees trips back to unravel the past it becomes clear her grandfather was a hero, active in the opposition to the Japanese occupation. I heard the author on NPR , the story sounded fascinating. Part memoir as Lee discovers much of herself thru her research.
Yikes !Am I not saying in every post I need to downsize ? There is a 20%off sale at Half Price Books that lasts through Monday. These Sillitoes are not considered as good as The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner ,but looked interesting. Also , have been on the hunt for Lawrence Blocks first Matthew Scudder novel for a friend, there it was.I have an excuse for 7 brothers a major novel of Finland sure, why not ? early Forrester I haven‘t read 👍
Show us your #librarycard Since @PaperbackPirate had to replace her card after a wallet theft 😟I commented about my Phoenix Bird library card. Tempe is pretty obvious, Phoenix bird for Phoenix,Scottsdale had several to choose from so took the classic cowboy sign one. Glendale has several to choose from of course I‘ll choose a cat!🐈
#serieslove2024 back to this great series. Brunetti has to investigate a suicide at an elite military academy. The case is complicated by a lack of transparency, the parents are powerful people , politicians & military leaders. Brunetti is always thoughtful, his wife , family, food , wine , & Venice are always part of the story. Love this series, many to go , this is only book 12 of 30 plus !
#StorySettings #Farm Wendell Berry is such a gifted writer. Well drawn characters and an incredible sense of place. Though his setting is in Kentucky, there are things in these two books common to farmers everywhere.
Because what else would you post on a lazy hot Sunday but a book published in 1970 you got at Goodwill. Thrift on!
I should be reading but ….😁 season 3
#StorySettings #Office 5 young women who want to live & work in New York working in a publishing house typing pool. Published in 1958 , filled with office politics & sexist men doing what they do in such a setting. One young woman has set her standards high, she wants to become an editor. A novel I really enjoyed when I read it awhile back. Made me think of The TV series Mad Men at times.
#ReadingChallenge #poetry #readingwithmaja Well, this was my April poetry pick , so life getting in the way of reading persists. Atwood‘s poetry is very good , her topics then same as now. Nature, living ,aging, family, just universal. Novels or poetry, Atwood is always worth reading. Always thought provoking.Margaret is 84 years old now ,and still adding to the conversations of life & literature.
RIP Alice Munro https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/may/14/alice-munro-obituary
Sophie looks on..
This is the first book from Ode Books,a line to celebrate book spaces & book people. Paul has been the principal buyer for City Lights for over 50 yrs. His insights & curious mind shines in this Q&A volume. City Lights has always been at the forefront of the avant-garde, world literature, LGBTQ+ & POCauthors, he honors his fellow booksellers & the book buying community by always featuring works that will expand your knowledge of the world.Sublime!
#StorySettings #Skyscraper one of my favorite books of New York City photos. It was a WPA project, many of the structures photographed no longer exist.
#FirstLineFridays
“I think I fell in love with Sally while she was eating breakfast, the first morning we were together.”
These 38 essays are a tribute to McMurtrys mentorship of readers & writers. I knew little about his era teaching at Rice, or his love of early women‘s travel writing. His life changed when a cousin dropped off a box of books to the family ranch as he headed to WWII. I have always been fascinated by his book scout years ,his turning Archer City , Tx. Into a book town. I haven‘t read all his books so some are left to savor!
Crissy has done well for herself, becoming an artist in residence portraying a Princess Diana who sings, touching hearts of the fans that sell out her shows. her life hasn‘t been perfect, she spends her days slightly self medicated in her cabana by the pool.Things change drastically when her estranged sister shows up,adopted teen & boyfriend in tow. Chrissy‘s boss is found dead in the desert, things unravel from there.Characters & Las Vegas shine!
#StorySettings #Seaside A lot of readers call this one an unrated Stephen King title, I have no opinion as it is another one on #TBRMoutain 😂Sheesh, I have so much reading to do!
#StorySettings #River There were raves about this book when it first came out, this copy was passed to me by a friend & it languishes on my #TBRMountain as well. I have heard it‘s really good though a dense read . Historical fiction dealing with Germany in the WWII years will be covering difficult things. Hope to get to it soon.
#StorySettings #Mountain playing catch up. This is Abbey‘s 3rd novel ,originally published in 1962 . Still on my #TBRMountain
@BarbaraBB posted about Paul Auster so I dug up a few. His works always seem to have , luck, chance, & wonder. I loved Smoke , the film he worked on and wrote with Wayne Wang . The last one I read was Leviathan. I really like him, I end up talking up his books & if the person is interested, give them to them. I bought 4321 right after it came out, but haven‘t read it yet! I haven‘t read them all , example Baumgartner from 2023. RIP Paul.
May the 4th be with you ! Happy Star Wars Day
#TLT #ThreeListThursday I‘m not surprised. I watched so many movies from the 80s !😂 I‘m not that surprised by which ones I didn‘t watch, my tastes haven‘t changed that much. These are common rewatches,Blues Brothers,Big Chill, Ferris Bueller, Bull Durham.
2 from the 80s high on my list that never make the lists, both from 1981, Reds & Ragtime .
I should have jumped on it , not like I don‘t have anything to read around here! 😁
My picks : The Ministry Of Time /Kaliane Bradley
Real Americans /Rachel Khong
