The Murderess | Laurie Notaro
post image

“The first drop of the rust-colored liquid that splashed on the wooden railway platform in the Union Station was not noticed.“

Just started this new historical fiction novel by Laurie Notaro, who's mostly known for her satiric essays (a la Dave Barry, but for women!). It's based on a true story of one the most notorious crimes in Phoenix history, The Trunk Murders. Laurie and I were in the same AP English class in high school. #smallworld

DogMomIrene Ohhh, I had a student choose this case as a topic for her research paper. The umbrella topic I set was Arizona History. When this 8th grader presented her paper, we were all riveted. Definitely adding this to the TBR. 2mo
dabbe @DogMomIrene It is so different than her other nonfiction essays. And she is riveting! I've also been fascinated by this crime, so I'm enjoying that aspect also. It reminds me a bit of Erik Larsen's THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY. Same sort of idea. 🤩 2mo
DogMomIrene @dabbe I haven‘t read her before, so this will be one I really look forward to…because from what I remember about the paper and presentation, this crime is wild! 2mo
dabbe @DogMomIrene Definitely! 🤩😂😍 2mo

Okay #unpopularopinion. You all loved it but I am halfway through and calling it quits. It probably is the language. I have to read out loud to make sense of what I‘m reading. It‘s been taking me forever that way and it leaves no room to enjoy the story. So it‘s me, not the book but I just lost patience and want to read something I actually like to read 🤷🏻‍♀️

#Booked2023 #wronglyincarnated

Cinfhen At least you tried! Hopefully you love your next book 🤞🏼 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I really did. But I felt like an idiot, reading slowly aloud, trying to make sense of what I read. Next up is 🤞🏽 2y
squirrelbrain I can imagine it was difficult to read, so don‘t beat yourself up about it. I found a lot of the language strange and struggled to understand, particularly to start with, and I was reading in my first language. BQ will be better! 😁 2y

sarahbarnes I'm sorry this one didn't work for you! I loved Bandit Queens and hope you enjoy it! 2y
TrishB Hope you enjoy your next 🤞🏻🤞🏻 2y
dabbe These reviews are just as important as the picks. I value your opinion; therefore, I'm not reading it! You're doing us a favor you know! 😍😘🤗 2y
BarbaraBB @dabbe Thank you for trusting me 🩵 I have to add that English isn‘t my first language so that might me the reason I had such a hard time with the book 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Suet624 I remember when I reviewed this book that I was concerned it might be tough for you. Your English is fantastic but this took time to get into the swing of the language. You‘ll love BQ. 2y
dabbe @BarbaraBB What is your first language, if you don't mind my asking? (because I would have NEVER known!) 🤩😍🤗 2y
BarbaraBB @Suet624 @dabbe Thank you both for the kind words ❤️❤️ My first language is Dutch, Denise! 2y
dabbe @BarbaraBB How cool is that? I can't speak it (unfortunately), but my ancestors on my mom's side are from the Netherlands: their surnames are Pastoor and Van Dyke. 💙💚💙 2y
Megabooks Yeah, this really worked for me because I went audio, but even then it was very colloquial and slang-heavy! 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Thank you, that is definitely reassuring 🤍 2y
BarbaraBB @dabbe wow, those are real Dutch names for sure although we write Van Dyke as Van Dijk! 2y
dabbe @BarbaraBB I was trying to remember how to spell my great-aunt's last name: phonetically it was Vanvuctaveen. I never knew her, so the name spelling escapes me! #smallworld 🩵🤍🩵 2y
BarbaraBB @dabbe That name must have evolved over the years, it doesn‘t ring a bell. The only Dutch surname I can remotely think of is Van de Veen 🤔 2y
dabbe @BarbaraBB I texted my sister for the name. Boy, was I way off! It's spelled Vugtaveen. Is that closer? 2y
BarbaraBB @dabbe I googled it and you are right. It‘s not a very common surname but I found plenty of people called Vugteveen (with an e instead of an a)! 2y
dabbe @BarbaraBB Thanks for doing that! I need to dig more and learn about my Dutch heritage (and obviously learn how to spell better!) 🩵🤍🩵 2y
BarbaraBB @dabbe You‘re doing great! 2y
dabbe @BarbaraBB 🤩😍🤗 2y

I picked up book 1 of the series today. I felt it went perfectly with my sunflower tea cup. My friend who I went shopping with today actually met him when she was in 5th grade. AND he recited the 1st couple paragraphs of this book to the class! (He also read from another book but I can't remember which one.) #smallworld

Lindy What an appealing table! Looks delicious. 2y
bookishbitch @Lindy thank you. It was! 2y
BookmarkTavern That is the perfect spread for this book! ❤️ 2y
bookishbitch @ozma.of.oz The cup even has the sunflower seeds in the bottom. 2y

I love making connections like these. 😀
The King's Speech is one of my favourite movies. And of course I had to see how similar they ⬆ looked. #gladtogoogle #smallworld

Weaponxgirl I watched a documentary about the romanovs a while ago and they really weren't joking about how similar they both looked! 6y

I love it when the book you‘re travelling with becomes very real. Our train this morning continued onto Takamatsu (across the water to Shikoku. We stayed on Honshu). I kept thinking, ‘I know that name!‘
Reading Kafka again tonight made me realise why. A lot of the action in this book occurs in and around Takamatsu #smallworld #inMurakamisfootsteps

BarbaraBB You‘re in Japan. I am sooo jealous 😍🇯🇵 7y

This memoir is heartbreaking and fascinating too- I didn‘t expect to have such a close geographic connection either- I literally lived up the same street in Chicago in 2004! It‘s sure to start lively discussions- and will serve as my #Refugee read for #Booked2018! @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

Cinfhen Wow!! How crazy is that #smallworld 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great pick! I‘m thinking I‘ll use it for this prompt also. 👏🏻👏🏻 7y

My Name Is Asher Lev | Chaim Potok
post image

A novel about a Hasidic (a mystical Jewish movement founded in Poland in the 18th century) Jew in postwar Brooklyn who is caught between his love of art and his obligations to his community. He is a firm #believer but is torn between his faith and his creativity. He tries to reconcile the two but the result is tragic.
#decdays @Cinfhen

Cathythoughts Excellent 👍 7y
Cinfhen @LauraBeth & @ValerieAndBooks both recently read this book...it's definitely on my radar!!! Looking forward to reading it! Chaim Potok, the author lived in my neighborhood in the states for many years. Went to school with his daughters #smallworld 7y

LauraBeth I almost wish that I taught high school English simply to be able to talk about this book with kids. And then I‘d hope that they‘d go back and read it again as an adult and encounter the story from a perspective given with age❤️ 7y
Dragon 💕 one of my favourites 7y
mrp27 I've been wanting to read this one for forever 7y

The War on Women | Sue Lloyd Roberts
post image

Today has been an interesting day. The wind is so strong it's shaking our pod and we've watched numerous families pack up their tents and go home. I found myself in conversation with Rita Banerji on Twitter this morning having only recently come across her via The War on Women #smallworld. I've learned about women using social media to highlight their charity causes or advocacy roles and I've snorted to myself at the sexism we... (ctd in comments)

charissharpe ...inflict upon ourselves via women's magazines. Why shouldn't we age gracefully? Why shouldn't we be able to drive? Why on Earth should wearing high heels to work be a company policy? Why should women have to fight to overturn a legal ruling that it's okay to rape them if their their rapist marries them after? Thanks to the rain I've soaked up a lot today. #womensrights #equalitymatters 7y
catebutler This is a great post and has left me with quite a bit to ponder, so thank you for sharing. And, I hope you stay safe and warm on this cold blustery day. 7y
trazo Love your post. In addition, why is hitting a stranger a felony but hitting ones wife a misdemeanor? Why do we continue to argue whether marital rape exists or not? It absolutely does exist. I love reading/hearing people address these issues! Thank you. 7y
charissharpe @catebutler thanks Cate, so many people left the camp site last night, some of the tents have been destroyed, so glad we're in a pod! I'm glad the post made you think, I had so much whirring through my head yesterday evening. 7y
charissharpe @trazo thank you for commenting Thelma, I didn't realise that the law is still so ambiguous over there... and I guess it differs state to state? I feel like we should talk about these issues, more & more! 7y

The Library | Zoran ivkovi?
post image

The #Punxsutawney Library! This was my library growing up. Everyone made fun of me for spending most of my free time here when I was a kid. Farm and mining country don't take kindly to book places, lol. My parents would drive me into town & I'd spend hours here. That's Phil's house, the "Burrow". If you ever come to town, you can see the two best things about Punxsy at the same time: the groundhog and the library ?. #LitsyLovesLibraries
