There are a couple voices telling the story of the Barrett family. They're all the same person, but each voice has a different perspective; there's 8 year old Merry, Blogger for Fangoria Merry, and Merry in a candid interview. The story revolves around the Barrett family and their struggles with mental illness or demonic possession ... or both.

Not sure I would call this a horror story, it does drag on a bit, but the end is pretty disturbing.

4. Beastie Boys
5. Static-X

Honorable Mention: Marvin Gaye, Metallica, Godsmack, White Zombie, Cypress Hill, Ice Cube, Suicidal Tendencies, Devildriver, Black Label Society, Glen Miller, Artie Shaw, Parliament ...

Amazing.

For the amount of detail covered, this book is a really great read. It takes place in the Pacific Theater of WWII and offers the perspectives of both the Americans and Japanese. It follows the Tail End Charlies from just before through the campaign to capture Okinawa.

This book was recommended, and borrowed, from a friend. I returning this book, but will definitely be adding this one to my library.

What in the actual frick?! There was a point where Kamikazi wasn't enough, so Imperial Japan attached wings, a cockpit, and a gas tank to a rocket powered bomb.

I'm really having a hard time processing this. I can't imagine the mindset on either side of this "weapon".

elawsan @Mariposa_Bookworm Thanks! Binx is a black cat (a very small tuft of white) and he was named after the cat in Hocus Pocus. Cheron, Binx's brother, started out as ours but is now my daughter's. Mostly because of his sweet temperament. Cheron ferries souls across the river Styx in Dante's Inferno. Chicken is actually my granddaughter's. She named him when she was a couple years old. He's older (about 5) and a grump. The vets love his name too. 😅 7y

Once you get past the seemingly alcohol fueled run-on sentences and the writing starts to make a little sense and you can kind of keep the characters straight it's actually not bad.

I wasn't really sure at first, but it grew on me. It turned out to be a decent story.

The story of the exploits of an American ambulance driver serving with the Italian army during WWI. I don't really get Hemingway's style, but it's worth a read.

The story itself wasn't bad. The writing, at times was a little hard to follow. The over-reaching shock value of the subject matter was gratuitous and mostly unnecessary. Not a bad book.

Audiobook.

This is a deeply profound, first hand account of life as a girl, young woman, then adult born into slavery in the American South, pre Civil War. Her recollections are incredibly vivid and hauntingly told.

While this story isn't easy to get through because of the horrendous subject matter, the story is compelling and her perseverance of spirit and determination is amazing and admirable.

It was an audio book. It counts, right?

An interesting story about a General, a tutor, a Frenchman, an Englishman, a young woman, a grandmother, casinos, roulette, and of course gambling. Behind the facade of propriety, either love or money seem to drive these characters.

I'm Beginning to delve into the Russian authors. This one is a bit dry, but still a pick.

Poor narration though, and the bits that were in French were atrocious.

I approached this book with little knowledge of who James Garfield was, other than an American president who was assassinated. Through her research and masterful storytelling Candice Millard has presented a portrait of an American president who was loved by all and that of a man whose strength and character I will personally strive to emulate.

A must read for anyone interested in American history as this story encapsulates so much of it.

Awesome, but I was left wanting more.

Parts of this book take a real minimalist style that can be kind of confusing, but the ideas and the execution are wonderful.

There is an Amazon Original series based on this book. The series is what compelled me to read this book. The series does not tell the same story, rather a kind of reimagining. They are similar enough that a fan of one should enjoy both though.

Dig it if you can.

I'm the kind of person who reads a biography to learn about the subject. I honestly believe that the only thing I learned from this book was the author's biases and prejudices.

I've read other books about the era, The Revolutionary War, and I have already formed opinions of who Thomas Jefferson was. I was looking for a more factual and comprehensive read.

Thoroughly disappointed in this book.

I submit for consideration, a small glimpse into Jefferson's inaugural speech.

"I shall often go wrong through defect of judgement. When right I shall often be thought wrong by those whose positions will not command a view of the whole ground. I ask for your indulgence for my own errors, which will never be intentional; and your support against the errors of others, who may condemn what they would not if seen in all its parts. "

I dig it.

This book is hilarious! A lighthearted take on the vampire genre. Jules is a vampire in New Orleans who prefers the flavor of someone raised on a hearty southern diet as opposed to the more healthy variety. As a result of his poor diet Jules is an overweight vampire who struggles with the everyday tasks of being a vampire.

Parts of this book had me laughing out loud. It's a really fun read with a great protagonist.

So here's the deal, the main reason I read this book is because I really wanted to read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I just didn't want to read that book and not have a frame of reference. I've read them both now and this is the better read by far. That's not to say that that P&P&Z isn't a good book, it really is, but this book has earned its perch among the best.

It's a classic love story with strong characters and Victorian sensibilities.

It's interesting to see the perspective that another culture brings to a topic that everyone, at some level, knows so intimately.

Lukyanenko offers the Russian perspective on life, death and the supernatural. The story, masterfully told, builds characters with enough grit to be compelling and realistic.

If you believe you know the vampire, werewolf, wizard genres, do yourself a favor and read this book. If only for a new perspective.
