Themes: Interwoven Short Stories, Quirky Charcters, Journalism

This was a quirky, quick read - just what the doctor ordered. I enjoyed some of the characters‘ stories more than others, there was one I skipped after 3 pages because I knew my blood pressure was rising from the stress the character was facing 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 Overall though, a pick with an astrisk that it will not be everyone‘s cup of tea ☕️🧋🫖

MallenNC I read this years ago and all I remember is I hated it bc of what happened to one character‘s dog. It felt mean. 1w
Aims42 @MallenNC I can understand that 😔💔 I was shocked at that part, like mouth dropped open shocked. 1w
MallenNC @Aims42 It‘s the first thing I think of when I see the cover. 1w

Journalist Kostyuchenko is also a lesbian, apparently giving her government multiple reasons to target her. Yet here she is unafraid to show what truly happens on the ground in Russia while showing a deep love for her country and its people. This is searing and tough to read but excellent.

I did manage to work out the baddie in this one (which is very rare for me to do), and yes, I like this series too!

Some of the most unflinching writing I‘ve ever read. And that last line is a gut punch. (Pictured my old метро stop)

I listened to this book and there are so many passages I wish I could go back and read. Everyone needs this book. Having the author narrate on the audio was an added bonus, and I have not gotten Vargas‘s story out of my head all week.

Texreader Such a good book 8mo

Too many uninteresting sections and too many cliches for this to be a pick. I really did want to like it because I have liked McDermid‘s writing in the past, but this just didn‘t do it for me. #audiowalk

kspenmoll Good to know; I enjoy her Karen Pirie series. (edited) 9mo
KathyWheeler @kspenmoll I read the Wire in the Blood series, which I loved, and was going to start the Karen Pirie one. (edited) 9mo

Well, about 80% in, something happened that made me care about what‘s going on in this book, so I will finish it. I‘ve only got an hour and a half left, so I‘ll probably be done tomorrow. I may start Make Trouble early for #SheSaid. #audiowalk

Oh, yippee. Now we have my other least favorite thing to read about in fiction — terrorism. I also haven‘t made up my mind if I like our heroine, Allie. I‘m not even sure she is our heroine, even though the series is named after her, because I feel as if we get a whole lot more of Danny. Maybe the series should be his. #audiowalk
