What an exquisite jewel of a novel! A cloudy, green-and-grey jewel. With such a short book, there was more mood than story—but the depth of loneliness and connection conveyed here was gorgeous. My only complaint was that I wanted more—just a couple more chapters of resolution—and yet I also understand why the author closes the story where she does.

I had this on my holds list and it came in RIGHT before it got picked for #CampLitsy24. ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) I had little confidence I could get the hold timing right if I sent it back, so it was an early read and hopefully I can remember the details for the discussion! @BarbaraBB 2d
Hooked_on_books I read it before it was even picked, so we‘ll be in the same boat for camp! 2d
BarbaraBB Encouraging that you loved it so much! Can‘t wait for 8 June! 2d
mcctrish Mine just arrived 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2d
squirrelbrain Great that you loved it! ❤️ 2d

Weekend book haul. 😁 Lots of my holds came in at the library at the same time (as they do) and I found a couple of books on my TBR at at used bookstore. And I splurged on a copy of the tagged book since I can‘t get it at the library yet.

vivastory Great haul! The Sarah Waters has been lingering towards the top of my TBR for awhile now & I have been wanting to try Penelope Lively 3d
Ruthiella I loved Fingersmith and Alias Grace. Not read that Lively title, but I loved everything else I‘ve read from her! 3d
Cathythoughts Great ! I loved Fingersmith and Alias Grace too ( especially Fingersmith ) … and I‘m interested to read In Defence of the Act (edited) 2d

batsy Great stack! Really want to read the Olga Ravn and Effie Black ones. Loved both Alias Grace and Fingersmith. 2d
squirrelbrain Great stack! In Defence is likely to be in my top books of the year. I just found Disappearing Earth on Everand, in advance of Bear for #camplitsy24 2d
BarbaraBB Such a great haul! I loved all the ones I read! 2d
sarahbarnes @vivastory same on both fronts! I‘ve read Moon Tiger which was very good. (edited) 1d
sarahbarnes @Ruthiella that‘s great to hear on all fronts! I‘ve only read Moon Tiger and loved it. 1d
sarahbarnes @Cathythoughts I‘ve wanted to read it for awhile and that‘s very good to hear. 1d
sarahbarnes @batsy that is great to hear! They‘ve been on my list for awhile. 1d
sarahbarnes @squirrelbrain that is high praise! I‘m really excited to read it. @BarbaraBB also highly recommended it. 1d
sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB that is great news! I was convinced to get In Defence of the Act from your review! 1d
BarbaraBB That one is so good! But so are Fingersmith and Alias Grace and Disappearing Earth 😀. You‘ll love them and need to read a lot before they are due back 😉 1d
BarbaraBB Oow and What I‘d rather not think about too! 1d
sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB I know - how am I going to read them all before they have to go back?! 1d

This ticks all the literary boxes:
beautiful writing ✅
Not much happens/“quiet” ✅
political ✅
Format change halfway through/“experimental” ✅
It stops rather than ends. ✅
I loved it at first then I got restless. Overall I really liked it but I‘m always left a bit unsatisfied by these types of novels?! 🤷‍♀️ maybe it‘s just me. (Audio version was brilliant tho!) #camplitsy24

squirrelbrain Thanks for letting us know your thought - I don‘t like unresolved endings either, so we‘ll see! 4d
Caroline2 @squirrelbrain It‘s a great book for Camp Listy and I can‘t wait to hear everyone‘s thoughts about the ending and the format change. 😃 (I had to read it early as I was on the waiting list on borrowbox then it just became available?! Now there‘s a massive waiting list again!) 4d
squirrelbrain I‘m looking forward to hosting it! ❤️ 4d

BarbaraBB I very curious about this one. I didn‘t like this one much 4d
Caroline2 @BarbaraBB Hmm, after reading your review it might be worth borrowing and not buying 😂 4d
Megabooks Very interested to try this in August! Great review! 4d
BarbaraBB I know @TheKidUpstairs loved it so it‘s probably me! 4d
TheKidUpstairs Sounds like exactly my type of novel! @squirrelbrain and I tend to agree on a lot of books, except for those unresolved endings - I love them 🤣 4d
TheKidUpstairs @BarbaraBB hopefully this one works better for you! 4d
rockpools Audio it is, then! Thanks 😊 4d
squirrelbrain Oh well, we definitely can‘t be friends then! 🤣🤣 @TheKidUpstairs 4d
BarbaraBB @TheKidUpstairs I hope so and expect too. It was really me and my mood, not the book I think! 4d

You wouldn‘t know it from the sunny day, but bad storms left us without power for 12 hours overnight!

I was so pleased to get my @AardvarkBookClub picks (far right) with the v cute bookmark! #aardvark I bought the tagged for #CampLitsy24, and Impossible Things was just $1 at my library‘s sale.

Library books: Limits and Morningside were on the CL longlist. Mean Boys is a queer essay collection I‘m already enjoying, and 888 just looked fun.

Ruthiella Glad the lights are back on! 😃 6d
BarbaraBB Such an amazing stack of books 😍😍 Hope the storm has left you! 6d

Megabooks @squirrelbrain thanks! @AardvarkBookClub keeps bringing their A game with the bookmarks! 5d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB fortunately it‘s been nice since but Katie already lost a large tree on her new property. We had several very old large ones come down this time. One even blocked a nearby road! 5d
Megabooks @Ruthiella me too! 12 hours was long enough! 5d
dabbe @Megabooks 😮🤩😀 5d
BarbaraBB That is such a shame, those trees. They must have been so gorgeous in that garden of yours. And Katie is coming to live there for sure? That is so wonderful 💛 4d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes, Katie is coming for sure!! 🎉 3d

Exactly a month from now we‘ll go camping! In #CampLitsy24 we‘ll kick off with Clear, our first June read. As always we‘ll discuss the books over two weekends, even when it‘s as thin as this one!

On June 8 we‘ll discuss chapter 1 to 23, on June 15 chapter 24 to the end.
I‘ll be your host for the June reads and will post some questions to discuss sometime during these days.

We are looking forward to a summer of reading and chatting with you!

Leniverse My hold is number 11. Which is still much better than Butter (21) 😂 I guess I'll be doing some book shopping. 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures LoL I was 64th in line at my library, so I got it from the bookstore, but I think I got either a bootleg copy or an unlabeled arc because it is paperback and seems to be 20 pages shorter than it should be according to GRs.... Excited to see if I am reading a different story! 1w
Oryx Yay! I have my copy ready to start 1w

Not enough “wows” for this one - absolutely brilliant!! Read to familiarize myself with her work because Bear is a #CampLitsy24 choice - and @BarbaraBB loved it so I thought I might too ♥️ Beautifully written, and each story came together seamlessly. Learned a lot about a place I know nothing about. Best part was the ending, just incredible!

Soubhiville Agreed! I thought this was an amazing book. Really looking forward to Bear. 1w
CBee @Soubhiville me too 👏🏻 1w
BarbaraBB Thank you for trusting my opinion 😊. I am glad you loved it too and am looking forward to reading Bear together 💕 1w

CBee @BarbaraBB ♥️♥️♥️ 1w
sarahbarnes I‘ve been wanting to pick this up too since we picked Bear for camp and I haven‘t read this one. Glad to see you and @BarbaraBB liked it! 1w
LeeRHarry Just seen I‘ve already stacked this already - maybe I should check if my library has it. 😊 1w
Deblovestoread So glad this was on a prior year #AuldLangSpine list…so good! 1w
Amiable I really liked this book, too! Went to a local book club meetup where they were discussing it—when the majority of attendees started trashing on the book because they didn‘t like the structure (ie different character viewpoint in each chapter), I knew this wasn‘t the book club for me. 😄 1w
CBee @Amiable I wouldn‘t fit in at that book club either 😂 1w
CBee @sarahbarnes hope you like it when you get to it 😊 1w
CBee @LeeRHarry hope you like! 1w
CBee @Deblovestoread I saw that you loved it too, we have such similar tastes 😊 1w
SamAnne So good. I need to put this on the list for a reread. 1w
CBee @SamAnne definitely one that I‘d consider rereading at some point 😊 1w

This is an interesting novel. My spouse asked me about it, and I described it as "quiet." When asked to elaborate, I explained that the story unfolds quietly, slowly, haltingly. There are delays, but even in those delays, things happen. It's introspective but is very efficient with the words used to describe that introspection. The tone of the story is paralleled by the feeling of the setting---isolated, remote, cold, foggy. Definitely a mood.

ImperfectCJ I look forward to discussing this one for #camplitsy24! 1w
kspenmoll Great review! 1w
Tamra I love Davies‘ writing. I would have liked more wrap up to the ending for this one. 1w
ImperfectCJ @Tamra It definitely ends abruptly. I turned the page and was like, "Oh, Author's Note? Okay." 1w
BarbaraBB I am saving this for June (#CampLitsy24) and am looking forward to it 1w
