Read. This. Book.
The horrors these young women went through, the blatant disregard for human life the companies showed, how long it took for the public and medical community to accept and acknowledge what was happening - it‘s astounding. I cannot believe I had never learned about these events.

This genre of non-fiction was a stretch for me, which made it a #slowread. The story of Elizabeth who set up an intricate spy ring to get secrets to the union, and also by Emma who fought for the union disguised as a man and then fought for her pension after the war drew me in the most. I knew nothing about any of these women and glad I read it, though chunks were a slog for me. #litsyatoz #letterA #lrcbingo #historicalevent #bookriot #war

An interesting and powerful story.
On the nonfiction side: how horrifying. There will always be more that happened during Ww2 that I will learn about and no matter what it will still shock me. To think that people were okay treating other humans like this is just unfathomable.

Sarahr875 The rest of my review: On the fiction side:I like that Sepetys connects Lina with Joana (Salt to the Sea). Then theres kretsky and the doctor. Showing even in the most evil of places, there are still good people who will do the right thing. Let's be those people. 8y
Hollie I loved this book. I'm hoping to teach a historical fiction class next spring and plan to use it. I think students will really respond to it! 8y
Sarahr875 @Hollie oh they definitely would. Have you read Salt to the Sea? I liked the layout of that book better, and it struck me more than this one did. This was great, but that one was even more amazing. 8y
Hollie @Sarahr875 yes! I couldn't put it down. It felt weird to be reading a book where characters are freezing cold while it was 150 degrees by the pool (perhaps that is a bit of an exaggeration) but I loved it! I did not love her 8y
Sarahr875 @Hollie I have not read that one! And I agree. It felt weird to be in the safety of a warm home with a fully belly while reading. 8y

This book was great! It's very well researched #historicalfiction and is written from "Patsy" Jefferson's perspective. I thought the authors did a wonderful job of taking their research and writing about what life in the Jefferson household might have been like. A lot of the story is about the relationship between Sally Hemings and Patsy, which I found fascinating. #womenauthors

I didn't think I'd be in the mood for this now, but my library loan ends in a couple of days, so I made myself at least start it this morning to give it a go. And now I'm hooked. So way to go, me. I'm using this for the #historicalevent prompt for the #LitsyReadingChallenge as it is about Agnes Magnúsdóttir, the last woman to be executed in Iceland. So while not a fun read, it seems like it will be a good one.

Cinfhen It was good, nicely written 8y
Lauren_reading Nice! I have this on my TBR - I'll have to move it up 8y

Nebklvr How dare they!! I hate when that happens. And they have to be VERY loud to bother me. Still...some folks manage it 8y
Mdargusch I loved this book! I knew of the Hindenburg, but I never knew the particulars. I thought the author did a great job of bringing the victims to life. 8y
ephemeralwaltz I hate when that happens and I love reading on the train :( 8y

lynneamch Yes, you must try again. I heard her speak at our bookstore. She is absolutely charming and did so much research to get the details right. The story is imagined, but the human toll was real. I thought she did an amazing job of creating suspense even though we know what will happen. 8y
melrailey I loved this book. I listened to it on audio and it was fantastic. 8y
JazzFeathers Never know n of this books, but it sounds amazing. I have to hunt it down ;) 8y

Finished this one on audio while I was posting things on the website for my students. Such a sad, wonderful story, made especially poignant by having recently seen Allegiance, the musical. Counting this one for a few challenges! #LitsyAtoZ #LetterF #ERMadlibs #PlaceName #LitsyReadingChallenge #LRC13 #historicalevent

A little audio listening, as my annoying migraine is making a reappearance. Madeleine Albright, former ambassador to the UN,first discovered her Jewish identity at the age of 59, when a newspaper reporter broke the story. This is her recounting of her years growing up in Prague, when Hitler came to power. It's fascinating (at times dry) #popsugar ~a book with 4 seasons in the title #LRC13 & #BWB #historicalevent #readharder ~ book about war

Jas16 Hope you are migraine free soon. 8y
