In some of the social media world, the word fascism is getting used a LOT lately. I heard this author speak with a favorite author of mine. Immediately put the book on hold at the library. I want to understand what this kind of politics is and isn‘t. Stanley makes is uber clear, with examples across locations and time periods. Highly recommend if you appreciate political topics.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m using this for my #aboutimmigration pick in #nonfictionchallenge2020 because he talks so much about using immigrants and refugees as a wedge to divide countries into “us” and “them.” @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage p.s. On my blog post, the tweets in the photo aren‘t out of focus. Did the blurring in deference to people here who get angry about political posts. 🧐 (edited) 4y
TheBookHippie I really got a ton out of this- also the blurring 🤣🤣😬🤦🏽‍♀️ 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @TheBookHippie Glad to help. The book is so worth the time. And scary how pertinent it is. Yeah, the blurring. I was part of a heated convo here last week around whether political posts are “appropriate” here on Litsy. Honestly, I am reading more political stuff b/c of Litsy. Not in spite of it. 4y
Cuilin Just ordered this online. Thanks. Also excuse my ignorance what is the blurring? (edited) 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cuilin I blurred part of the photo I posted here. But not on my blog or other places I posted this. Hope you get a lot out of the book! (edited) 4y
Suet624 Political posts “appropriate”? Ugh. Sorry to see that was brought up. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Suet624 Yeah, not on one of my posts. But someone else was getting a “lesson” in how “we don‘t do this here.” I had to jump in and say that in fact we do talk politics here. And the commenter got huffy and blocked me and the original poster. It was sad to see here. But I‘m not all that surprised. 4y
Suet624 Well that‘s unfortunate. I suppose I wouldn‘t like seeing a bunch of trump-loving posts but still... 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Suet624 It is. There are better tools built into all social media than giving lectures. Just keep scrolling or unfollow the person. I‘ve done exactly that here and in all the other platforms I participate in. Anyway ... we move on. 4y

I finished this one on audio today while I was on a walk at a nearby national park (where I took the photo). It would have been a five star read for me if it weren't for the ending! This is my book #aboutimmigration #LRC7 for the #LitsyReadingChallenge @jessica

shawnmooney This is one of my favorite novels. I hope she writes another one someday! 7y

What a sweet novel! I really enjoyed a day in the life of these two teens. The story was a stretch, but I loved it because of that. The mini stories on secondary characters may have been my favorite part of the book. #litsyreadingchallenge #aboutimmigration

MeggsKY I really liked this one too! Now I have to read Everything, Everything. 😊 8y

#LRC7 #aboutimmigration #mountTBR I loved Adichie's writing and was sad to see the book end. About the ending... did anyone love it? I found it a bit lacklustre and am trying to put my finger on why that is.

Bibliogeekery That picture! 😍 8y
Kimzey There was plenty to like about the book, but I agree about the ending. It was disappointing. 8y
Notafraidofwords It felt so rushed ! 8y
mllemay Yeah, I agree about the ending. For me, it was partly that the love stories were not my favorite parts of the book and and the ending was all about resolving her guy problems... I was hoping for a more powerful message somehow, if that makes sense? 8y

This has been the #audiobook keeping me company on my beautiful evening walks the last couple of days. I don't tend to listen to a lot of fiction, but I'm really enjoying hearing the different voices in this one.

Esperanza Rising | Pam Munoz Ryan

5⭐️ my first experience in reading Ryan was Flying Freedom for a children's literary course in college. It was good but not amazing. However, after reading Echo and now Esperanza Rising, she is undoubtably a wonderful writer. A fast paced book but with wonderful characters and a universal theme. #LitsyReadingChallenge2017 #AboutImmigration

Orphan Train: A Novel | Christina Baker Kline

Pickpick

I enjoyed this book. Interesting subject matter (before this book I didn't know that orphan trains were part of our history), and a real page-turner. The writing good but accessible, and the characters are likable. I would have liked to know a little more about Molly, but I just loved Vivian's story. Thanks to @Dorae for letting me borrow this!

Cortg I have this on my nightstand. I'm really looking forward to it! 8y
beagle.mama I didn't know this about our history before reading this either. 8y
Daisey There's a middle grade series I read and loved many years ago that led me to read more about this topic, but I have yet to find time to read this particular book. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. 8y
awishman I love how the author paralleled the culture of modern day foster care with the orphan experience from earlier times. I really loved this book. 8y
monkeygirlsmama I read this one last year. Was very interesting. 🙂 8y
