Out of The Easy | Ruta Sepetys
A haunting peek at the life of a teenage girl in 1950s New Orleans.--Entertainment WeeklyIts 1950, and as the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets, seventeen-year-old Josie Moraine is silently stirring a pot of her own. Known among locals as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, Josie wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer. She devises a plan get out, but a mysterious death in the Quarter leaves Josie tangled in an investigation that will challenge her allegiance to her mother, her conscience, and Willie Woodley, the brusque madam on Conti Street. Josie is caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld. New Orleans lures her in her quest for truth, dangling temptation at every turn, and escalating to the ultimate test. With characters as captivating as those in her internationally bestselling novelBetween Shades of Gray,Ruta Sepetys skillfully creates a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny. From the Trade Paperback edition.

EadieB This is a character driven book and I especially liked Josie's character. Her mother was a prostitute but she was not going in that direction. The plot was one that led me to read the book to the sad ending. I look forward to reading more from this author as I really liked this book. If you like heartfelt books then you will love this book. 13mo

Anyone else get this way?

I am listening to the last portion of the story, and it is making me so anxious because the main character is having horrible foresight. I know that nothing good can come from the flawed perspective she has. Movies where characters keep lying and digging themselves further into a hole also make me anxious like this, so just wondering if anyone else feels the same? Gah.

New Orleans, 1950. Josie has grown up the daughter of a well known prostitute. She doesn‘t want to be anything like her mother though and longs to leave New Orleans and go to college. But that‘s not always as easy as it seems. I loved this story about finding the family you choose and the decisions that shape our destiny.

I read Ruta Sepetys for the first time last year when I randomly selected Fountains of Silence at my local library. Since then I've been reading her other books, and this makes only my third, but she's definitely one of my favorite YA authors now. 💚

This book is set in 1950s New Orleans, and the setting and the characters are so well done that you feel like you're part of that world.

If you haven't read this author yet, you should. 😁

This was not the most uplifting book, but it was a wonderful story. Josie is the daughter of a New Orleans prostitute. Josie is not proud of this and wants nothing more than to be the exact opposite her mother. Her well known mother makes this difficult for Josie. Regardless of Josie‘s actions, she seems to be constantly plagued by the actions of her mother.

Mehso-so

This book is about a young teenager in the 1950s trying to make something of life, but is burdened by the choices of her prostitute mother, caring for an ailing elderly friend, a run-in with the local mob, and new love interests. I found the book to be fun and easy and quick to read; however, Josie experiences so many extreme situations that it begins to feel non-plausible at times.

Filled with loveable, quirky characters, this book is a great read for a week off. The main character, Jo, manages to be both tough and warm; you can't help but cheer for her as she faces tough odds. In the end, it's about the family we make and not just the one we're born into. Thanks for the great read, @Crazeedi!
