Set in Tenessee in 1952 this is a great story of a family of 3 brothers + a father who is returning after a long absence. The father E F Bloodworth, in his 70s has a reputation for violence in the past and for playing the banjo. The bk also focuses on his grandson Fleming. This was a really enjoyable family drama with great characters and some brilliant scenes. Evokes the region + tensions within families, as well as the exuberance of youth well

Four brothers, 3 of whom are conjoined at the head. The 4th, our narrator, is Thomas: the apathetic son in gentry of a deep southern town of Kingdom Come. With the bayou granny witches, the debauchery of Thomas and the town, and more than one family secret. Truly creative, within the genre of the southern gothic tradition. I enjoyed it. It‘s quick and strangely human. The normal is abnormal. Cast of characters well developed, and coherent plot.

Did a readathon with @Lin3han this weekend. Since we both loved Summer Sons, we went with Mandelo‘s new novella, which was dripping in southern gothic. He captures summer in the south soooo well, and his spooky horror has made southern gothic one of my favorite subgenres. I will protect Les and Stevie with my life!!

#TLT
My October recommendations! #frightclub #hauntedshelf @jadams89

1. THE ELEMENTALS: McDowell is the one who wrote the original screenplay for BEETLEJUICE. true horror at its Southern Gothic best.
2. HALLOWE'EN PARTY: gotta have at least one Christie, right?
3. THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES: My #1 book of all time. The scary moors, a howling hound, a man literally scared to death, and Holmes & Watson. #perfection

Thank you #GroupQ for another excellent reading memory! This read was perfectly timed for me, apt for hot summer days. Powell‘s writing about the humid Louisiana climate was nearly palpable. While I think this could have been expanded to at least flesh out some characterization, I can appreciate what Powell was trying to do. Lots packed into a small parcel- sex, heat, supernatural horror, sin, vengeance- what a great way to end #LMPBC!

@Bookzombie thanks for picking this, Margie. I thought it was great. The language was exact and I felt held by it. I wanted to have a fan to fan myself with because I kept feeling as if I was put right there in the swamp in the middle of a hot summer. Sorry about the lateness, @psalva It‘ll be on its way to you tomorrow.

psalva No worries! It‘ll give me time to buy a hammock and hire a cabana boy to bring me iced tea and fan me while I read. Sounds like I‘ll need it! 10mo

Reggie @psalva @BookmarkTavern I really kinda wanted to say I would give it 4 out of 5 Blanch Devereauxs. It really had that Southern flavor. 10mo

Two authors from #Round20 of #LMPBC !

Arden Powell for some terrifically unnerving horror, and K Ming Chang for creepy and insightful short stories!

I can‘t wait to explore more of each author‘s work, and I‘m super grateful for the members of #GroupQ for introducing me to these authors!

#SundayFunday Have a marvelous day! And don‘t forget to tag me in your responses!

The waters of the bayou are rising. People from town are disappearing. & Eugene finds himself entranced by the Bonnie & Clyde pair that‘s swept into town.

Wow can Powell set a scene! I could feel the heaviness of a Louisiana summer against my skin. & the insidious creeping horror as we don‘t know really know anything that‘s going on. Really reminds me of Alma Katsu‘s historical horror. & I‘m definitely going to look up more by Powell. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
